Jamaal Tatum's DUI revisited

Recall that SIU star Jamaal Tatum was caught driving drunk, running stop signs, & failing to yield back in March.

Even the local press in Southern Illinois (2nd link above) was alarmed that this is very bad for SIU and should be dealt with strongly and decisively.
Tatum had been in trouble before, even suspended before ( for just ONE meaningless exhibition game ) when he trashed a police statio and broke windows.

The only thing SIU coach Chris Lowery said publicly about Tatum over this most recent incident was that--
"he has not decided on the specifics of Tatum's punishment this time."
The SIU AD said:
"When you have a group of kids, sometimes they make mistakes."
and
"I try to let the coaches handle those situations, because every situation is different and every team is different....
... But I think the program is in good shape."

In other words, they were going to take a wait and see attitude.

Well, now four more months have passed.
Tatum issued a public apology.
Tatums court date has come and gone.
Public comments here and there were "boys will be boys", "he's already suffered enough public embarrassment", and "Lowery will deal decisively with this...".

But guess what? No further action by Chris Lowery or the SIU staff. No penalties, no punishment, no mention of any suspension of games. In fact, the very next news anywhere in the world on Jamaal Tatum, is found in a release in May, saying Jamaal Tatum had turned down an opportunity to go to Boston and do a summer internship with the Celtics, and that he was going to stay on campus.
But there wasn't even any public mention anywhere, not even in the press or the message boards of the outcome of his hearing on April 13.
Apparently he got off pretty easy because he was considering going to Boston for the Summer.
So obviously no jail time or severe penalty. Maybe nothing at all, maybe charges dismissed.
Either way, I personally wonder if C-Lo plans even the tiniest bit of discipline. He gave Tatum a meaningless one game off (a preseason game) for trashing a police station. I'll bet he gives a free pass for this "mistake" as the SIU folks call it.

Here is the paradox, though...
When the JJ Redick DUI occurred, here are a few of the statements on the SIU message boards:
--"Yeah, drunk driving makes him looks like he has an otstanding character doesn't it Coach K........? retard. I hate Duke.... "
--"Reddick is a stroke." "I knew he was no good..."
--"can't wait to talk about J.J.'s drinking problem at work."
--"not the smartest thing to do"

If Jamaal Tatum was a bit-player, Lowery would have booted him from the team to make himself look good and to get another scholarship to use.
BUT-- Tatum is one of his biggies. So let's see what is done. I predict nothing or token action. Remember, when Jim Les had just about the only discipline issues of similar nature (Jabbar Battle, Mike Suggs) he suspended Battle two games and demoted him to virtually no playing time the rest of the year.
Suggs was told to leave post haste and left immediately.
Anyone want to give odds that C-Lo don't wanna lose Tatum for even one game??

The ole 'sweep it under the rug'.

Not surprised.

And I have a friend who is an SIU grad and fan who told me back when Dye and Roberson were playing (not that he was referring to them - just trying to give you a timeline) - he said disgustingly how much he disliked all the 'thugs' on Bradley's team.

WHERE YOU NOW???

tatum and the siu people are nothing but drunks. even if we don't finish higher than them this year, are players are better people.

Siu = low life.

Tatum was the SIU player that deliberately elbowed POB in the head to hurt him and take him out of the game in Carbondale when Bradley was winning. I would call that a "thug".

Has anyone heard anything new on Tatum?

Maybe his treatment could be a harbinger for how McB will get treated for his DUI at UIUC.

There was talk on the SIU board from someone who professed to know
that Tatum would get a 3 game suspension that would encompass their two
exhibition games and then their regular season opener against weakling, D-III Washington U. (St. Louis).
Not likely they'd even need him to win those games.
But then they would need him for the rest of their early games
Murray State, Arkansas, Minnesota, etc.)
so expect to see him back by then.

Well, based on the need theory regarding McB... he could get a (I am guessing 2 exhibition games included) max of 8 or 9 games before they would definitely need him. The 8th game (including 2 exhibitions) is in the Chicago Tourney vs Miami of Ohio. I suggest this game cause they don't want to lose in the first event at this new arena. But Mia-Oh may not be much of a threat. So maybe the 9th game against either Rutgers or Bradley. Same reason as before, don't want to lose this event in it's 1st year at the new arena. AND DEFINITELY NOT AGAINST BRADLEY!

So all this crap I hear from Illini fans saying McB deserves or is gonna get a suspension of all 1st sememster games is just lip service and bs.

And then we will have Tatum as a precedence.

And we will hear how hard hit he has felt from the Law and how he has now become a new person and paid his debt to society and no longer needs to be punished but instead needs to be rewarded and praised. (You might even hear a story about how he had a rough childhood or some bs and how HE is the victim in society somehow - and all hearts will bleed out to him)

Book it.

maybe the conferences need to get involved to set minimum penalties for this very serious offense. there is never ever any excuse for drinking and driving. i am shocked and dismayed that so many do.

Recall that this is not the first legal issue for Tatum while at SIU, he is a repeat offender just like McBride.
He should have been on a "short leash" and his punishment should be much more severe for his repeated infractions.
But look for Jamaal to be back playing before the D-I opponents show up on the schedule.

Here is a novel way of dealing with discipline issues among players.
This kid is one of the team's studs, and yet he is being kicked off the team and
expelled from school.

I think most schools would expell a student or student/athlete if they fired off a weapon on campus.

These guys that get the DUIs will get their punishment when they are trying to get new auto insurance when their current one gets terminated.

Jamal Tatum was finally suspended today by his coach Chris Lowery. His suspension is for violating team rules.
Lowery acted quickly in issuing the suspension. Tatum was cited for DUI in March, a mere 7 months ago.

Exactly as some predicted, the suspension will be for the Saluki's first 3 games, which include 2 meaningless exhibition games against Division II teams, and the first official game which is against a lowly Division III team, Washington U of St. Louis (they play basketball?).
IMO, considering this is not the first time Tatum has been punished for violating team rules and getting into trouble with the law, this short, 3-game suspension against 2 meaningless Div II exhibition teams, and the weakest opponent any MVC team will play this season is nothing short of a joke.

2 other Salukis were suspended, but neither of them will miss any real games.

SIU schedule- http://siusalukis.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/silu-m-baskbl-sched.html

Doesn't the NCAA take a stand against drinking? I think its quite a hypocrisy that a player has to miss an entire year if he tests + for marajuana, but he can be stoned on booze, get DUI's, or in the case of the other 2 players suspended, be drinking while underage, and the NCAA doesn't seem to care.

If Tatum had killed someone while driving drunk, would Lowery have made the suspension 4 or 5 games and actually made him miss a game that meant something? Didn't Eddie Sutton resign and retire when he got caught for DUI?

ray brown smoking a little weed is less harmful than tatum getting behind the wheel dead drunk and almost killing people. not fair that tatum only misses 3 games while ray has to miss 2 months. will enjoy beating siu even more this year as they are not the type of program we want to be.funny how the ncaa stick their nose in our team's business and leaves their's alone.

My feelings exactly. This is a slap on the wrist, and makes it appear the coach is more interested in winning the games than sending any real message.
