FT Shooting

Disturbed

While the season is young, and I really don't have any data to support my opinion, it seems that free throw shooting in NCAA basketball is really bad. I suspect the current style of play where the 3 point shot or the dunk are the desired result has something to do with this. Do kids practice free throws anymore?

The last several years have started this way for Bradley. Yet, by the end of the year, Bradley is always near the top of the MVC in FT shooting. The guys missing are all guys with a history of very good FT shooting, so I think Bradley will be ok there.

FT misses become real magnified when a team is in real close games..

As long as BU wins, most folks will let this slide and hope the players warm up from the line. :|

Now, if BU had lost a couple of these games.......

I believe that Disturbed is talking about the NCAA as a whole, not the Braves individually.

I do believe you're correct, Dis, that FT shooting has been suffering. I watched Maryland the other night go 14-30 (if my memory serves correctly) in a game that they lost by six or eight points. Make half of those misses and you're in the game. Other college games I have watched, the FT percentages have hovered in the 65-70% area, it seems, for both teams.

Maybe the players aren't practicing their FT as much as they did in the past (I know we had to shoot a minimum of 25 at the end of practice before we could leave when I played) and it could very well be that coaches aren't putting the emphasis on it, preferring to concentrate on defense, changing the offense enough to present a challenge to opponents, and conditioning of the team.
