Bruce Weber to SIU?

Andy Katz from ESPN thinkgs its a good idea. I do too...

Is there any precedent for a coach leaving a school for a higher level job, getting fired, and returning to the previous school? I'm sure there is, but I can't think of anyone.

Dana Altman left Creighton for a day. Billy Donovan left Florida for the Magic for a few days. Those aren't firings, but they are the only ones that come to mind. I'm sure it has happened before as well.

I can't think of one recently just yet, but Homer Drew retired from coaching Valparaiso in 2002, then when his replacement (son Scott) left after a year -
Homer returned to coach again from 2003-2011.
One Indiana head coach in 1969 was fired after a 9-15 season (Lou Watson) but his replacement was so bad (Jerry Oliver 7-17) that they dumped him after one year and brought back Watson.

I know a few left for a higher calling in 1941 & 1942 then when they returned from the war - took over their old spots..
one was a predecessor of Geno Ford's at Muskingum

I cannot see Bruce returning to SIU because of the money he will get from Illinois, anything is possible but for him to go back to Carbondale makes no sense.

Bruce is also a friend of Chris Lowery. Lowery was one of Bruce's assistants when SIU hired him as their head coach. Would that affect Bruce's decision?
I would have to believe this may have already been discussed between SIU and Bruce's representatives.

I can't see BW going back down there. He's a hell of a guy and the only reason he is gone because he would not cheat! Look how many players he almost got but went to schools and coaches that are known cheaters. I'm not an Illini fan at all but I do like BW. I really do not know how Wisky and MSU keep doing it year after year.

Asst Coach at a top program, then try to get back to top program as head coach.. vs going to a mid major as head coach..

How do you know that SFP? Seriously? Weber's never really won at Illinois with his own guys. He can coach, but he recruits like a mid-major.

Not to mention that Greg McDermott came back to the same conference after his time at Iowa St. So while not coming back to the same team, that's still pretty close.

I'm not going to point out the obvious but there was one pretty good player that committed to Illinois and backed off and played for Sampson and another recently that went over to KY. He recruits like a mid-major because he does not cheat!

I don't think Tom Izzo cheats, and I'm not overly impressed by the players he's been getting, but he figures out how to "coachem' up".

"...he could be a huge help to Chris Lowery at Southern Illinois if the Salukis can??™t afford to push Lowery out in Carbondale."

Was Katz thinking BW could have been an assistant to CL if CL had not been fired? LMAO!!!

Lou Henson left NMSU to go to UIUC and then went back to NMSU.

Complete hogwash. You are saying that Bruce lost his job because he wouldn't cheat to get recruits? He and his staff brought in the 9th, 11th, and 14th (scout) rated recruiting classes over the last 3 years. Doesn't seem that he was having any trouble getting top level players.

Methinks he pulled a Pete Bell and let Happy and other friends of the program dictate how and who he should recruit.

Here is the secret to MSU and Wisconsin success. They have a proven established system and they recruit to that system. Wisconsin does it with less heralded players than MSU, but MSU has reached higher levels in the past decade. Bruce should have stuck with his system and recruited to that system. He probably would still be there had he done that.
