Bradley Secret Scrimmage

Well-known member
Bradley played a closed scrimmage against Bowling Green last week. The details, format and the outcome are pretty confidential but
I am trying to get a few tidbits. BGSU is coming off a good 18-win year, averaging 81.3 ppg which would have placed among the top-3 in the MVC.
They clobbered Kansas State and played close to Michigan State (within 3 pts in the final 8 minutes).
However, they also have a huge turnover of players this year and a lot of new guys. One of their returning players is a guy Bradley offered

Why the secret when these exb, games can be posted now plus you are allowed to have fans. I know with all the new players on our team the fans would have liked to see more of them in person. The RC could have charged $10 a ticket and made a little money.

I am going to assume a couple things here. I assume the Bowling Green scrimmage was played before Media day Wednesday. I re listened to the interviews with Wardle and the players. They were asked what players stood out so far. They were asked what players would help them this year. I am thinking they would mention players that are the most recent play. Since Bowling Green was the most recent then Treyvon, Xander, Kyle, Ben, Noah played well in the exhibition game

there is reason to believe our guys played optimistically

Yes- it was mid-last week as I said

the reason to do closed scrimmages is because some coaches experiment in these scrimmages with different & new lineups,
possibly to work on or "expose" weak spots or deficiencies, & practice special or situational plays that might be saved and
used later. They don't want any of our future opponents seeing them. Plus they don't want the concern that if they get beat or lose by
a bunch, that it would generate negativity in the media or fanbase.
Lots of teams do it, and anyway we are playing two open, public scrimmages against GOOD DI opponents!
... so fans really don't have too much to feel disappointed about. I trust our coaches used the "secret scrimmage" to our best advantage.

More info about Bradley’s secret scrimmage-
Neutral site - played in Indianapolis
Everyone played except two who were held out due to injury
All looked good - more when I have time

Any idea who was out with injury (I guess we will find out tomorrow) ? I guess one would likely be Timo if his injury occurred before the secret scrimmage.

It was Georgi & Gustavo ( knee surgery spring of 2025)
The two guys who have had knee surgery in the recent past but not sure it was for knee reasons.
Timo injury happened after the scrimmage

Thanks-I thought Gustavo had knee surgery before last season. Did he have another injury/surgery or did I miss something.

Bradley’s upcoming exhibition opponent Saint Louis played a closed scrimmage last night at Iowa and lost by 4 points with one starter, Quentin Jones, held out due to ankle sprain. Unknown if the injury is serious enough that Jones will miss the upcoming exhibition vs Bradley.
In their other exhibition, Saint Louis beat Nebraska 79-74.

Other exhibition games possibly of interest this weekend:

Saturday-
-Future BU opponent George Mason at Villanova noon
-Illinois at Cincinnati 6pm

Sunday-
-DePaul at Loyola 1pm
-Northwestern at Illinois State 4pm
-Indiana State at Butler 5:30pm

Also, there’s word that Timo’s injury is not a stress fracture or broken bone, just a sprain.
Also a couple reports from observers who have seen several practices say Georgi was our best 3-pt shooter with Trayvon, Josh, Kyle & even Dimitrije up there as well. More later
.. new band director Dr. Monte Grise - I’m impressed, they sounded great

So far the WBB team looks good(at least the Red Team), this guy thinks so

Villanova beat future BU opponent George Mason 84-67. The game was close the first half then Villanova lead by 6-10 pts
most of the 2nd half --- then it ballooned to a 21 point lead in the final couple minutes.
George Mason was led by Braydon O'Connor (14) and Efeosa Oliogu-Elabor (12)
The stats that stood out most- George Mason had just 22 points in the paint...and they gave up 24 points on 17 turnovers.

Illinois beat Cincinnati 104-94.
Of interest, the two guys Bradley recruited, Zavier Zens (offered but committed to UNI then decommitted) and Kankakee's Lincoln Williams got 17 minutes between them and went 1-6 (Zens was 0-4 all from 3-pt)
But Illinois' starters were dominant. The quintet of Stojakovic, T Ivisic, Coleman, Davis & Brown went 26-46 (57%), and 10-20 from 3-pt, combining for 76 pts with each averaging just 26 min per game.

I have to agree about the band being so much better, the leader obviously made a huge difference.
I thought these 5 players stood out today ; Payton,Josh Ibu, Williams, Grill and Richardson. I would say Thornbue and Seastrunk were ok. and they will definitely contribute. You add Timo to that list and those are the top 8 players. Alarie, Kowalczyk, Pavlovic, Gaspa and Guimaraes appear to be behind at this point. Rugaard was ok but he missed too many open shots today. I also think Gustavo has not fully regained his knee strength as he appeared to be hobbling some out on the court. Definitely have a lot of size plus they were quicker then i expected. Just need for everyone to keep improving.

I can see why you thought so but let me ask a few questions along that line....when you actually analyze who won and why...

-First, the WHITE team had FOUR of the likely starters (Dietrich, Josh Ibukunoluwa, Payton, Thornbrue), right?

-The RED team had only ONE player who had played even just one single season of ONLY 11 games before injury - at the DI level (Alarie is the only one and he played one season, just 11 games, at Northeastern). NOBODY else on RED has a single game of DI experience.
RED also had two true freshmen who have never even played anywhere in the US (Gaspa, Dimitrije) and two redshirt freshmen who hadn't played a single game of competetive basketball in almost two years since they were in high school, one of whom was laid up a year recovering from ACL surgery. Who on RED would have been expected to carry them to a win?

- the WHITE team would have certainly been the expected favorite to win today's scrimmage, yet RED led the whole way and won, controlling the paint, grabbing rebounds, blocking shots and forcing the WHITE team to rely on mostly outside shots and tough shots late in the shot clock.

-so, I think one take would maybe be that the RED guys, Gustavo, Xander, Noah, Gaspa & Pavlovic played pretty good defense and hit more shots.
I am optimistic that they will give us good minutes when the real season gets here. Noah and Seastrunk added the speed & energy.

Murray State played a "Secret Scrimmage" today vs University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), however, media was there, photos taken and published
and the stats and box score made available - so it's a pretty poorly kept secret.

Murray State won 93-66
Roman Domon had 30 pts, transfers Shon Tupuola (5 pts) and Brigham Rogers (8 pts) split time at the post position
Murray State led pretty much from the get-go, UIW had 23 turnovers,
BOX SCORE
