Bears Lucky or Good?

Amazing 10th touchdown by a defensive player in last 20 games. This time Tim Jennings (who HAS to make the pro-bowl) is the thief. Question is: Are the Bears lucky or good? Or both? My view is that it's nice to see younger players (Jennings, Conte, Wright, Paei, McClellen) filling around an aging defensive core that's well past the wrong side of 30.

It's a good record....against some not so good teams. Indy is the best team they have beat so far. After next week the Bears have a pretty tough 7 game stretch...

Agreed, but they are winning the games they are supposed to win and usually when you do that and you win a couple of the toss-ups (Detroit, Minnesota, etc), you have a recipe for success and a playoff birth

You can't say they are lucky, it is a whole team effort, and they are making the plays. They have gotten some "breaks", but the players made a lot of them happen. The only major weakness is the Oline but few teams have a good one. The Bears are pretty good.

+1 Winning in the NFL is not easy regardless who you play. I'm hoping they can hold up because the D is what is carrying this team and its fairly old. I also suspect they'll make the playoffs but that offensive line will be what dooms them. Can't see a team go against the better defensive teams in the playoffs and win if you can't run and not give your QB time to throw.

The 2001 Bears were lucky. The 2006 Bears were good and the 2012 Bears are good. Did the bears eke out a close victory against a weak team Sunday? Yes, but they've blown some people out. This defense is performing a bit better than the 2006 version (which was elite)-- 14.3 pts/g vs 15.9 pts/g so far. The offense is much MUCH better, even with the questionable line and despite almost identical numbers through the first 7 games... Cutler > Grossman, Marshall > any WR in Bears history, and Forte > Thomas Jones. The line is a big problem, as is Cutler's holding the ball too long, but they were problems for the 2006 team also.

There's a lot of football left to play and injuries could mess it all up at any time, but this is could be a special year.

I guessI'm just not as enamored with them as you guys....they really haven't played what anyone they you would a call top team yet....other than Green Bay....and they are inconsistent.....

They have won the games they are suppose to though....after next Sunday their schedule gets much tougher

The Bears are good and lucky. The win against Carolina included scoring on an interception where the receiver fell down- that isn't the Bears doing....As to "blowing people out", their largest margin 41-3 came against an 1-4 Jacksonville team... and they beat Indy 41-21 in Week one against a rookie QB in his first start...

Their next 5-7 weeks will tell much more....

I think I heard that before:D...

Staying healthy, having a top QB, a D that can keep you in the game and momentum is key the NFL. The Giants were far from the best team in the regular season last year and look where they finished. Were they lucky or peaked at the right time? We'll find out shortly how good this team really is. ESPN has their power ranking and I pretty much agree. http://espn.go.com/nfl/powerrankings/_/year/2012/week/9

Anecdotally you can point to plays where a receiver slips and the DB doesn't intercept the ball (in that game by the Bears even). Luck's involved in every win, but the Bears rate of forcing turnovers is way up over a very long stretch of games. It's an elite defense-- the reason they "look" so much better than last year is because of a much improved d-line, that and good execution is making the secondary look awesome.

And for those who think Lovie's system never changes or adapts: here's a neat article that illustrates how the addition of one asset on the d-line is changing the way the Bears play D. http://www.windycitygridiron.com/2012/9/26/3405504/evaluating-the-chicago-bears-boise-package
