The first head coaching change of the 2014-15 season happened today. Hawaii relieved head coach Gib Arnold of his coaching position today. Assistant Coach Brandon Akana was also relieved of duties. Assistant coach Benjy Taylor (former head coach of Chicago State) will take over as interim head coach.
No official reason was given, but the University of Hawaii Chancellor did say that Arnold would remain employed by the university through January 31, 2015, and would then receive a lump payment for the remainder of his contract, which runs through June 31, 2015.

The University of Hawaii has been under investigation by the NCAA for self-reported infractions earlier this year, but there was no official word from them whether the changes today were related to that.

The Athletic Director released this statement-
"These painful but critical steps are being taken in an effort to strengthen our athletics program and to do right by our student athletes and students in general. We appreciate the work of Gib and Brandyn and wish them both the best in the future."

Chancellor Bley-Vroman said, "We are committed to setting the best possible examples for our players not only on the field of sports but in life. Athletics Director Jay has my full support in these steps that will strengthen the long-term future of our athletics program and our university."

ESPN has sources that went further and did confirm these changes were the fallout from the NCAA investigations, which likely means that reports of more serious infractions are forthcoming.

Gib Arnold was rumored paying players to come to Hawaii and got caught...
the facts will all come out soon and Hawaii is cutting ties quickly to avoid hard sanctions..

BUT - Gib Arnold is no stranger to controversy...and he certainly learned his techniques from an expert...
he was top assistant at USC under Tim Floyd when Floyd was paying players like OJ Mayo to come to USC

Utah State Head Coach Stew Morrill, one of the most successful and well respected coaches in Division I has announced he will retire after this season.
He has been head coach at Utah State since 1998, and this is his 17th season there. Morrill has a 611-287 (.680) overall DI head coaching record, (including stints at Montana and Colorado State), and he is 393-149 (.725) at USU.
His home court record at Utah State is even more impressive- 243-29. Only 29 losses in 17 seasons on their home court!

One of the greatest basketball coaches in NAIA & DIII and long time Illinois Wesleyan University coach & AD Dennis Bridges is stepping down and retiring...
This is the guy who recruited Jack Sikma when everyone else said the kid was too skinny, too limited, and not enough talent to play at the college level.
He also coached Jim Molinari.
He has almost 700 wins as a head coach..3 Final Four appearances, the 1997 National Championship,

Utah State's Stew Morrill will retire at the end of the season...
they just knocked off co-MWC leader Wyoming but lost yesterday to San Diego State (on ESPN)

...during the broadcast yesterday on ESPN, the announcers noted some potential replacements - and named a few up and coming
young coaches out on the west coast... BTW- their best player in Chris Smith, one of several Yuba players on their roster the past few seasons..

Fired Hawaii coach Gib Arnold now wants $1.4 million in salary he claims Hawaii owes him

the number of people wanting to fire Marty Simmons is growing....including a sincere discussion about breaking the bank & wanting to hire Greg Lansing away from Indiana State!

this is really ironic, since just a few weeks earlier - when Evansville was doing great (they were 10-2 when they beat UNI), people were lauding Marty Simmons as a good coach who had surely saved his job!

funny how so many MVC fan bases are beginning to talk coaching change - ours, Evansville, MSU, SIU...

So they want to hire a guy who is currently 12-13 (11-13 vs. D1), and was blown out in his only NCAA tournament game?
I think Lansing is a very good coach, but there are a lot of Indiana State fans who think Jake Odom had a lot more to do with Indiana State winning the last 4 years than Greg Lansing did.

Talk heating up of Texas head coach Rick Barnes back on the hot seat...
fans want to get rid of him - Gregg Marshall is the top name being thrown out as replacement...but also Dayton's Archie Miller, Shaka Smart, and Valpo's Bryce Drew..

Texas pays Rick Barnes $2.5 million - and Gregg Marshall is currently getting around $1.7 million

That would be an interesting gig for Marshall. You can definitely recruit at an elite level at UT. Would be in the shadow of Charlie Strong and the football program, however.

Is there any coach that does less with more than Rick Barnes? The amount of NBA talent to come thru Austin is insane, especially when looking at their tourney success, or lackthereof.

Texas can be a very good job, but whoever takes it, better win quick and win big. It is a football school first as is all of the south, with the exception of Kentucky. Tony Barone found that out first hand when he left Creighton for Texas A&M.

after yet another disappointing home loss - the Indiana fans' message boards are on meltdown mode..
they want to fire Tom Crean and hire Gregg Marshall...apparently long time Crean critic Dan Dakich (who was fired as interim head coach when Crean was hired) was really taking pot shots
