Bradley Basketball Lands High-Flying Chicago Guard Walter Lemon, Jr.
Release: 04/14/2010

PEORIA, Ill. - The Bradley Basketball team may be losing the runner-up in the Denny's College Slam Dunk Championship, senior guard Chris Roberts, but the Braves picked up a potential candidate for the 2014 event today when high-flying guard Walter Lemon, Jr. signed his National Letter of Intent to attend Bradley University and play basketball for the Braves next season.

A 6-foot-3 combo guard from Chicago Julian High School, Lemon was a 2010 third-team 3A all-state selection by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association after averaging 19 points, five rebounds and five assists per game during his senior season. He also earned 2010 second-team All-Chicago Public League honors.

"We are very excited to add a highly-skilled and explosive athlete to our basketball family," said Bradley head coach Jim Les. "Walter is a tremendous young man and will fit into the Bradley environment very easily and his future is very bright, both on and off the floor."

In the feature game of Saturday's Rameybasketball.com All-Star Game at Saint Louis University, Lemon scored a game-high 21 points for his Chicago all-star squad in a matchup against Missouri prepsters. His athletic ability caught the attention of Rameybasketball.com's reporter: "Bradley University signee Walter Lemon of Chicago Julian simply took over the game with his incredible leaping ability and mid-range game. Lemon will be a star at Bradley as he delighted the fans with his quick first step, his precise stepback jumpers and his ridiculous jumping ability."

Lemon will add depth to a Bradley backcourt that will return two of the active career scoring leaders in the Missouri Valley Conference - senior guards Sam Maniscalco (1,152 career points) and Andrew Warren (1,019). In addition to the return of solid freshman contributors Dyricus Simms-Edwards and Jake Eastman, the Bradley backcourt will be bolstered further by the healthy return of senior co-captain Dodie Dunson, who missed the bulk of the 2009-10 season due to a broken arm after averaging 10.1 ppg in his first season as a Brave in 2008-09.

Congrats to Walter - you will be a crowd favorite!!

BU had 3 seniors and an unexpected player losses (Singh, Roberts, Dunson, McCain)...
but Dunson is staying one more year and now one scholarship goes to Lemon...
thus we still have TWO open scholarships....

I strongly suspect we will sign at least one more player...and hope we can get a big man AND John Wilkins......

I have heard that an experienced coach and talent scout who has seen Walter believes he has the talent to step in and be a starter from day 1. We'll see.

On a normal year or even on this particular year? I don't know, he'd have to be amazing to beat out one of SM, AW, DD for a starting role as a freshman, plus he'd have to leap over DSE and JE on the depth chart too. That's if we don't sign JW and go with a 3 guard starting lineup too. If he is that good, then wow.

Welcome Walter, I'm excited to have you on at BU! Seems like you will have a great career.

If true, this of course, will mean BU announces this summer a new four guard, slashing, offense in 2010-11 with TB, WE, JP, and hopefully JW, sharing time at the 5! ;-);-);-)

G Maniscalco
G Simms-Edwards or Dunston
G Lemon
G Warren
C Brown/Egoff/Prosser/Wilkins

Imagine the perimeter weave this four guard offense could execute!

Bombs away!

What can I say, Walter is one of my favorite names. Thanks for coming to Bradley, Walter, and good luck and have a great career at Bradley. You're gonna have some fun :D

If WL can start over the likes of SM, DSE, DD and AW I'd be shocked. I hope that with his addition along with a true big we will be able to really press on D.

I'm hoping for a starting line up of:
SM
AW
TB
WE
and the BIG!

then a 2nd line of:
DSE
DD
JE
MK
JP

If WL can crack this lineup I'd again be completely impressed.

Even if we do not get JW I'm completely satisfied with this make up as long as we get that big! Add JW and now we really have a line change where both squads could contend for top of the MVC IMO. I hope we press a ton more is all I have to say. Look at how it helped UNI.

I do like the idea of having a second string that we could use to step in and not miss a beat. It has worked for other teams plus it keeps players happy and here because they are getting more PT. And that should also help with injuries since they wont be forced to play so many minutes.

With those 10 players you listed above including the unnamed big, plus throw in WL who some are saying is good enough to crack this lineup, throw in AT, and a possibility of JW......wow that that would be an unbelievable list of 13 players!

oh god, not the hype machine starting again for another recruit yet to play a game or take part in a practice.
