2 MVC games Monday 12/8

The Valley's RPI jumped back into 8th place, based pretty much on BU playing a highly ranked team on the road, despite the loss.
SIU's RPI of 273 is dragging the Valley down, but even worse, it is causing the Saluki fans to go ballistic and attack their own team and coach at every angle.
ISU's next two games are also against 250+ teams, so they aren't helping either.

I keep seeing how silly it is that Evansville is high in the RPI rankings, but you know what?
At least their schedule thus far has been teams with winning records.
Only a couple teams in the Valley (UE, MSU, BU) have scheduled tough enough and won a few of them, that they don't have the 0-6, 0-7, etc. teams among their opponents.

Doug Elgin...get busy and improve those schedules!! Half the Valley's SOS is way above 150, and three
Valley teams have SOS at about 250 and above.

Not exactly.

The reason for the jump in RPI was that Indiana State finally won a game, and the win came against a team that previously had an RPI around 50. InSU's RPI jumped around 100 points after the win, which had a corresponding effect on the conference's RPI (which is essentially an just an average of the RPIs of each of the conference's teams).
 
DJAlum, just curious.. you know how RPI is calculated right? RPI doesn't care who you beat or anything like that. It just cares about your record (25%), the record of the teams you've played (50%), and the record of the teams that played the teams you've played (25%). Valley RPI changed more likely because of the SOS effect of MSU and Lamar, rather than the Valley's record being incremented by 1-1.

Also the home/road weighting of RPI calculations can't be ignored because it's very significant. (1.4 for a road win, .6 for a home win and vice versa).

I'm quite familiar with how RPI is calculated. I don't think, though, that you are familiar with how CONFERENCE RPI is calculated. CONFERENCE RPI is just an average of the RPIs of every team in the conference. You can check this yourself by going to realtimerpi.com, adding up the RPI of each of the 10 MVC teams and then divinding that number by 10. The result is the conference RPI of .5332. Its simple math. InSU's RPI improved by around 100 spots with their win. That naturally causes the AVG RPI for the conference to go up....
 
I did not, indeed, know that conference RPI is calculated that way by realtimerpi.com. It's, frankly, a stupid way of calculating it. No reason not to calculate conference RPI the same way that a team's RPI is calculated. Either way, I wasn't attacking you (which judging by your tone you thought I was), but there is a prevailing myth out there that indicates your RPI jumps because you beat a team with a good RPI... While the truth is that your RPI jumps because you add a win and your SOS improves.
 
Louisville thumped Ohio U. (similar to what they did to ISU the day before) yesterday in the matinee game in front of 18000 or so. According to our radio announcers there were only about 100 still in the seats by halftime of the Sycamores vs. Lamar game that followed.

MVC results from Monday-

Indiana State lost again to go to 1-7. They great games from 2 guys, Jay Tunnel and Aaron Carter,
20 points each, but then just a total of 10 points (3 for 23) from the rest of the team combined.--
