Once again - MVC Player of the Week - Jaquan Johnson

At 17.0 ppg, Jaquan is on pace to be the highest Bradley scorer in twelve years. Walt Lemon averaged 18.0 ppg game his senior year ('13-'14). However, Lemon did it while shooting only 29% from three, and averaging 15.5 shot attempts per game. Johnson is currently shooting over 40% from three, and only taking 11.7 shots a game. The efficiency as a sophomore has been impressive.

Not sure at this pace how we ever keep Jaquan around. Any very high networth guys out there ready to provide a hefty NIL donation?

I'm sure the offers will come for Jaquan and I think he could be a good player at a bigger school, but I don't think his role would be even close to the same. Not that he couldn't do it, but I just don't see a big school allowing him to be the number 1 option at his position and height.

Hope he'd rather be the show and set records at BU than make a bit more money and have a reduced role.

Agree. Power conference maybe not but thinking more like another strong mid major just offer more $$$$. I sure hope he stays! And another thought is something like a lower tier team in major conference... ala Reink Mast. A team that is looking for a known quantity in lower big ten team may give him a decent role??

of the 14 weekly Player of the Week awards, Jaquan has won three of them, Alex Huibregtse has also won one.

Who does everyone think are the frontrunners for the Larry Bird Player of the Year award? Could winning the weekly award
more than anyone else make Jaquan Johnson the favorite?

My top four are Jaquan, Lundblade, Jalen Quinn and I guess we have to throw in Chase Walker since he was the preseason favorite.

But Walker is injured and missing games, plus his team is a middle-of-the-packer, while Quinn is pretty one-dimensional and isn't
helping his team win. I think that leaves the battle between Jaquan & Lundblade- but Lundblade, as dangerous of a scorer as he is,
is not the defensive stud that Jaquan is. However, Belmont is winning and voters are always swayed by that.

I know I am biased, but unless things fall apart in the final couple weeks, Jaquan in the MVP.
He's won the weekly award three times (maybe even shoulda had it one or two more times) while nobody else has won more than once.

And for the record, I predict the MVC POY will be Lundblade, since IMO, half the voters just pick the leading scorer on the 1st place team.

I just don't see how Jaquan isn't the POY with the year he's had and he's stuffed his stats in so many categories.
He really does it all and there's no contest when you compare his numbers to Lundblade's.
But since Belmont are the MVC champs, it will probably go to him and he's a senior.

But when BU won the Valley in 2022-23, the POY went to Tucker Devries as a sophomore as Drake was the 2-seed.

Here is where Bully stands to date among Valley leaders:
PPG - 2nd (17.1 ppg)
Assists - 4th (3.55 apg)
A:T Ratio - 3rd (2.6:1)
Steals - 1st (2.66 spg)
FT % - 7th (80%)
3-pt. % - 5th (40.8%)

I like your thinking...
what it will come down to is the biases of those who vote on the MVC POY....
recall that back in 2008, a guy who averaged 8.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg, and 6.5 apg won the POY largely because of the value of a great point guard.
And somewhat the same in 2001 (Bryson), 2014 & 2016 (Van Vleet), 2107 (Lee), 2018 (Custer), 2019 (Townes), 2020 & 2022 (Green), 2025 (Stirtz)

so it appears the unmeasurable value of a great point guard carries some weight!! Let's hope so.

Was that Emmanecker in 2008?

yes, he will likely remain the POY who had the lowest scoring average

and FWIW, I saw a discussion between a couple Maryland fans on Twitter ( X ), saying they desperately need
to land a top point guard from the portal to be relevant next year (they are bad - 15th in the Big Ten standings)
the discussion landed on going after Jaquan Johnson...

Exactly my fear.... I would be surprised if we have Jaquan next year.

You never know. Depends on the outlook for next season too. Jaquan wants to be on a contender and probably wants to play as much as possible. Coach Wardle somehow gets guys to stay. I didn't think Duke Deen would stay and he did and may have been a joint decision with Hannah. Bully has a strong relationship with some of the guys who are likely to return next season.

Guess it wouldn't surprise me either way - I hope we have some nice NIL $$ too. ;)
