What is going on with baseball?

I know Valpo is not good, but the Braves took care of business with 2 "mercy rule" wins and a tense 9-7 win. And, in a nice touch, the Bradley Coach stopped by to say "hi" during today's Chiefs game (which preceded the Valpo game)

Yes, thanks Ollie. They have played better these last couple weeks, though some of that is due to the schedule. They have gone 5-1 in their last two series, which were against Indiana State (11-13), one of the three other MVC teams with a losing record, and last-place Valpo (3-21). Bradley is now 10-14 in the MVC (14-33 overall) with a chance to get close to .500 in the conference with their final 3 regular-season games this week against Evansville, the other team with a losing record (9-15).

Well...the Evansville series is tied 1-1. BU is 11-15 and UE is 10-16. It appears that BU has to win tomorrow to make the MVC?
Yes, as MIkovio posted, if Bradley loses tomorrow to Evansville, then Evansville will tie them with a final 11-16 MVC record. Head-to-head record is the primary tiebreaker, so a loss tomorrow means Evansville will be 2-1 against Bradley and will get the #8 seed and Bradley would drop out of the tournament.

Indiana State, who was 11-14 going into today's games, just beat Illinois State 17-3 today to improve to 12-14. So there is no chance now of a 3-way tie.
But, if Bradley wins tomorrow and Indiana State loses, they will both end tied for 7th with 12-15 records, and Bradley would get the #7 seed because they are 2-1 against Indiana State.

Indiana State lost their final regular season game to Illinois State 12-1, and they finish 12-15 in the MVC.
Currently, Bradley is leading Evansville 10-6 in the 5th inning. If Bradley can hold onto their lead, they will finish tied with Indiana State for 7th place, at 12-15, and Bradley will get the #7 seed in the tournament. Go BU!

4 seasons in the 18 years with overall winning records (2015, 2016, 2018, & 2019).
5 seasons with winning MVC records- three of those were 11-10 records, and the other two were 11-9 and 12-10.
No MVC regular season titles, and no MVC Tournament championships.
One NCAA at-large bid (2015), with a first round elimination.
And note that the Missouri Valley Conference is significantly weaker in recent years with successful programs like Creighton (2013), Wichita State (2017), and Dallas Baptist (2022) leaving the conference.

I appreciate Elvis' dedication and hard work, and from everything I have heard, he's a really good guy. I wish he had had more success. I think all fans and supporters of Bradley athletics just want to see a more competitive program.

The question I have: what will change in order to make the program competitive? I am worried.

I was told the parents had a meeting to talk about the future of Bradley baseball. The Bradley representative was 15 minutes late to the meeting.. Then he could not answer the questions they asked. Several of the baseball players are transferring out. Now this is secondhand information so take it for what it is worth. I think one bright spot is Jim Shadid was a baseball guy. .I hope they can get the program going in the right direction

Let's just say that money will be very tight for a while. My fear (based on NO inside information whatsoever) is that it is in danger of being dropped with a lower cost sport added (to meet the NCAA minimum).

There are 35 players on the 2025 roster, and the NCAA maximum for baseball scholarships is 11.7 per year.
That means most, if not all, of the players on the baseball team are not on scholarship or are getting only a small fraction of a scholarship.
I hope the threat of transferring is not a serious decision. I would hope the players would at least wait until a new coach is hired and they get to meet with them.
But if they do choose to transfer out, good luck. I can understand that everyone wants to play for a winner.

For the record, the NCAA just changed their scholarship limit for baseball. The maximum was raised from 11.7 to 34 full scholarships for the 2025-26 season. This change severely hurts mid-major programs-
