ESPN gripe

I still have the Direct TV Sportspack on my satellite, at least until after this Tuesday's Bradley/SIU game. I set the timer to record the replay of Bobby Knight's "meltdown" yesterday on ESPN U. And the morons at ESPN cut that part out!

Now I know they cut out parts of the game since they condense their replays to an hour and a half. But come on! Love him or hate him, this is the reason people tune in to watch a Knight coached game. And now all of the sudden, ESPN apparently has become the "morality police" since they don't want to give Knight anymore publicity when he throws his tantrums.

As I have said before, I respect the guy for what he has done for the game, and he has never run a dirty program (in contrast to that filth who is running Indiana now!). His temper may get the best of him from time to time, but so do many other coaches' tempers. I mean I've seen worse behavior from Jim Les, and I don't mean that as a putdown. Most coaches lose it from time to time.

I understand most at ESPN (save for Dickie V and a few others) don't like the guy. But that does not mean they should be censoring games, especially when they run several Indiana games per year!

I guess now is the time to search Ebay to see if anyone has recorded this game.

If you're talking about the post-game press conference with his grandson, that was on SportsCenter all last night. They ran the entire thing. I'm not sure what happened during the game.

Who said most people at ESPN hate Bob Knight? And what does it matter that they show a lot of IU games?

I'd check YouTube.

No, I meant the portion of the game that included his tantrum (his shoe flying off), and his technical foul a minute later.

I wanna say Doug Gottlieb and someone else weren't too flattered with his behavior yesterday. Maybe more at ESPN do like the guy, but I know some aren't too flattered with him.

And I don't have a problem with them showing IU games. I just have a problem with the fact that they hired someone with so many potential violations in Sampson. I'm just saying if they are going to show games with such a dirty coach, why do they not show Knight during one of his tantrums. I think Sampson is far worse than Knight will ever be, despite Knight's occasional shortcomings.

It's called "contractual obligations." ESPN has a contract with the Big Ten and IU has a large fan base. ESPN would be stupid not to show IU games.

This is not saying I support Knight, as it's hard to pat anyone on the back that swears in front a 2-year-old ... but the kind of questioning that comes at press conferences at times must get really annoying. Having been in some myself, there are a lot of stupid writers who ask either irrelevant or useless questions. At least he's trying to have a little fun with these people ...
