The Cheerleader coach asked ... ... ...

And looking inward must admit what it really is bugging me about the cheerfollowers. I do not care for any of their cheers. Think their free give-aways to the audience is almost incestual. Have done my best at never watching them since the Versace years when after he left it all changed. I do not pay hard cash at the movie theatre to watch what is going on at the snack bar. I do not pay for and go to these games to see anything else other than the game. Menial distractions such as these cheerfollowers do nothing other than what this name characterizes them as to the extreme. I have said my piece. I feel better. Characterize me as you will. I did with them. Extreme y-a-w-n. At least I can take solace in the reality the organ player and his three songs are no longer. Now I only have to deal with all of the above and the worst referees any one can find ... ... ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Hey ... William S. Burroughs follows Bradley basketball. I loved Naked Lunch.

We love the cheerleaders and think they do a great job!
We actually have commented at other schools when we watch games away that Bradley seems to have some of the best!
There was a post about getting the student section to be more vocal and into the game and I think that the cheerleaders might be the best way to get that accomplished.
If they distract you from the game, maybe you weren't that into the game to start with.

I think the original intent of JediMaster was to offer a suggestion to the Cheerleadering crew. The Cheerleader Coach had asked for input/suggestions a couple weeks ago... so the Jedi made a point to offer some up.

Cause really.... if one is there for the game, then they probably don't pay attention to the cheerleaders. And if the cheerleaders are distracting based on their activity in one's view of the action, I'd think the individual would get tickets in a different spot in the arena.

cheerleaders and the band help make the "college" atmosphere which i love. one thing i like about st. louis during the valley tournament is the variety of bands and cheerleaders. ours stack up very well against anyone's. much rather have the cheerleaders and band getting the crowd going than some piped in music and/or video display.

Big Mike. Why did you make it personal? ... ... ...

Big Mike. Why did you make it personal? ... ... ...

Bert Notorious understood me and thank you, Bert, for the compliment on the bunny. Were people to take a little time out of their day befriending their local animals, I think everybody's day would go by a little smoother and better. Some one mentioned taking out the band as well. Hhhhmmmm ..... So far as what I heard the other night, we were entreated to, count them - it, one new song. Wow. Should I say it again? Wow. Maybe I should be impressed. On the other side of the same side of the same coin, same old cheers chanted too fast no one can follow and nothing new. My salute to the band for giving me one reason for thinking they made any contribution worth chatting about here on the board. Do I sound bitter here? I hope not. It is a simple thing, really. Sit down. Stay out of my way! How would you feel at the movie theatre if some one was in your way for the show's entirety and moving to a new location was not an option? Notice, BM, nothing personal here whatsoever. Let me liken my issue here with something else I can not understand here in the Peoria area. No matter to what business establishment I go to of any kind here in the central Illinois area, I am going to be force fed music in the background from phil collins. Think about it. How long has music been produced on the air waves? How many different artists have there been? And the only thing everybody plays is the same old crap from mister collins? Please. Oh! Some one had trouble with the absolutedness of my proper English here on the board. I am sorry. I brought myself up in this manner and writing proper to me is as looking proper.

Well Bert, I think that the bunny on flipper's avatar is way more pleasing to the eye.

If you're into humans. (insert sarcastic emoticon)

During my short time as a HS player, I always felt that cheerleaders were a distraction. I caught more than one pass with the end of my nose...

As a fan and a middle aged muppet, I better just focus my attention to the hoopsters...

Sorry Jedi, I'm a little confused because the last few times I've attended a Bradley University basketball game I was neither in a restaurant or a movie theatre so I guess I don't know how you feel. However, on the other hand, I do know how you feel when one goes out to local establishments in central Illinois and the only music playing is some soft Phil Collins.

The cheerleading coach asked for suggestions to get the crowd more involved with the band and cheerleaders, not to turn this discussion into how much you despise those very talented programs. Let's remember that the cheerleaders and the band members are students just like our men's basketball team and this board was not designed to trash those individuals who represent our school especially those individuals who are students.

Gargoyles. Follow the logic.

Gargoyles. Follow the logic.

I began my post stating what I did in as respectable a way I knew how, big mike made it personal, I posted again for a little more fun in a tongue-in-cheek way restating what I had already posted and find even through this extra work there are still some who do not understand the simple and the obvious. I was not upset with any one or any thing in particular. Not in the least. Not in the most. The cheerleader coach logged on asking for help and hints in how to improve his program and its performance. I wanted to do so. Their cheers are chanted lightning fast, involve more with and about themselves than the actual game being played and I said so in as quiet a way I could in post #s 1 and 2. Nothing personal. No individual attacks. Plainly stated. Plainly meant. Nothing more. Nothing less. I was in no way trying to step on any one's toes. Period. Now, with all of this said, I want to include what you said in the hopes of getting help with what you had to say to me. To wit:
"Sorry, Jedi. I'm a little confused because the last few times I've attended a Bradley University basketball game I was neither in a restaurant or a movie theatre so I guess I don't know how you feel." When and where did I state I was at the game and anywhere else at the same time?
"However, on the other hand, I do know how you feel when one goes out to local establishments in central Illinois and the only music playing is some soft phil collins because I get the same sort of "wow, this guy's a moron" sensation when I read your posts." As we are all aware from my second post I endeavor to maintain an excellence in writing standard in how I present what I am discussing in the form of print. This also means I am literally studying as I am both reading and writing, ensuring what goes in and comes out is in the best form it can be at all times. I want to ask what exactly you were trying to say between these quotation marks, but, stop myself in the effort. You went to name-calling which must mean you are upset with me for whatever reason and a logical and coherent conversation can not be had in such a situation which is too bad. Meeting interesting people from any where on this mortal coil getting to know them better has always been a habit or passion of mine.
"The cheerleading coach asked for suggestions to get the crowd more involved with the band and cheerleaders, not to turn this discussion into how much you despise those very talented programs." Wow. Another statement from you of something I NEVER SAID OR IMPLIED. You went on in the same manner, but, surely you can see now what you were saying is both unapplicable and moot. I trashed no one and am sorry to every one out there who had to read this presumptiveness from some one out there who, well, you get the point.

Yikes - this thread is starting to get ugly.

I just love going to games - watching an entertaing game and hope Bradley wins. Bring with it an enjoyable half-time show. Then sprinkle in something to chant along with (or yell along with) and tap my foot/clap my hands to during time-outs (cause during the action I am usually feverishly wringing my hands and/or clapping with some fist pumping and maybe some jumping).

The cheerleaders do a great job... without them, they would be missed!

Moving on...

I have a question for the cheerleader coach, or anyone who might know. Are the timeout routines scripted in advance? If they are that should be changed. I paid attention today to what went on during each timeout. I'm glad we were playing Quincy instead of a regular season opponent. We were down at half and when we made our move in the second half Quincy had to call a timeout and the crowd was getting excited for the first time. It took the cheerleaders a good 10 seconds to move away from underneath the basket and when they did, they marched into the crowd carrying each other and clapping, while the band might as well have played a death march. The Bradley fight song should always be played and the cheerleaders should be on the court raising cane in tha situation. I might have heard the fight song twice today, but when it didn't matter. Also, who thought up the stupid promotions this year? What a way to take the crowd out of the game.

Ok here is what happens at every game. Both the cheerleaders and band get a script of what will happen at each timeout. When there is a delay between the timeout and when the band starts playing, or when the cheerleaders go out, is when the script shows that the announcer has something to say before the fact. But then again, remember the second half we had the guest annoucer also, so that may have caused some confusion on his part...

As far as having the Bradley fight song being played every time... I do recall another comment on this board about how "the band never plays any new songs." So apparently the fight song gets anoying after hearing it more than 4 times a game... but I completely understand that we SHOULD play the fight song after a huge drive when the crowd is into it! I'll talk to Dr. Vroman about that. Oh and plus, we had our guest conductor today, so give him some credit, he did a good job.

Other than that, I honestly thought the crowd was dead today. Just my opinion...

The crowd was weak today but it was a preseason Sunday afternoon game, so maybe that had something to do with it. I know it's been debated around here before but I'm in favor of the fight song being played more. I understand that the band practices long hours and that they want to show their hard work by preforming different songs, but when it comes down to it, it's not about the band, and I think that's something that certain people forget sometimes. I'm sure as we get into the regular season the crowds and the atmosphere will improve, remember that there were staff changes in the marketing and game ops. and it's preseason for them too. Another thing that I noticed, and this starts from the top down (hint: watch where the BU athletic admin. sits) most people don't stand for the fight song. It's a shame really and I understand that some people don't wanna be up and down out of their seats but that's not really an exscuse for all the people that do stay seated. Just my two cents ...

When the Braves are on a roll and the opponent calls a time out, most fans are on their feet, but everything but the fight song is played. I do like it before the game when the cheerleaders run out with the flags. That is impressive. But who thought up those crowd quieting promotions. Also the PA announcer should let the band and cheerleaders do their thing and knock off the worthless chatter at the beginning of timeouts. For example, I think 99% of the fans at the game yesterday knew our next home game was against Iowa St.

When the crowd is noisy, you want to keep the noise going, so Cheerleading needs to keep the visual "noise" going. To me, multiple flags, multiple back flips, and perhaps running into the stands are the main current cheerleading activities that accomplish that goal.

When you're in the upper bowl, you are looking down the pyramids (that have to be setup close to the crowd) do not add much impact as it is 2 people that essentially become one from "above".

Although the T-shirt cannon or sling shirt is a really fun halftime type activity, only ~300 people are excited when they are pointed into their area. Running into the stands to throw t-shirts creates more simultaneous cheering that involves the whole crowd.

(I realize at different times, cheerleading needs to start an organized cheer to get the crowd going..)

That paradice thing was the most ridiculous promotion ever. Took way too long, was impossible, and they actually picked contestants out of the crowd, making it even longer.

09jdubs,

I love our band and think they do a great job. I really like some of the traditional songs that they play each season and wouldn't want any major changes in the music. However sometimes with a few of the songs (i.e. the "old" ESPN jingle) I feel like we are stuck in 1995. Just a thought.

Also, any word on a new CD? We used to love to play our old one on road trips, but it has dissapeared. My wife inquired a year or so ago and Dr. Vroman said maybe a new one would come out this year.

I think the best promotion I have seen this year was at the St. Ambrose game where people from the crowd took part in the long ball shooting competition. That was cool and got the crowd into it. Everything else has been kinda sad.
