CollegeHoops.net Top 144 countdown

Hello Friends!,

I thought that was a pretty well thought out prediction of our season. I happen to agree...I also think the biggest challenge for Jimmy and his crew will be getting all the new players to mesh and accept their roles. Unless there's some redshirts (which there may be) there's just not enough playing time for everyone.

Just to remind ....

in 2006-2007 CHN predicted Bradley at #120, 7th in the MVC, no postseason:

(they also had Butler at #106, but now they seem to have learned their lesson on mid-majors)

in 2005-2006 they had Bradley at #156, 7th in the MVC, no postseason:

(they had George Mason at #95 and Wichita State at #96)

#33 in the CHN Countdown is Illinois
http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/new/story/2007_08_illinois_basketball_preview41141

Recall, Illinois had a very hard time against those weak teams in Canada last month, losing to one and being taken to overtime by two others!
Of the dozen or so other D-I teams that went up to play those Canadian clubs, none looked as bad and as vulnerable as the Illini did.
I cannot impagine that this Illini team will be better than 90% of all D-I teams!
This whole team has been in turmoil, there's talk of coaches being fired, they have little depth at any position, and have lost their best scorer (Warren Carter) and their two best outside threats (McBride & Jamar).

Then I lost all respect for this guy making the rankings, when he says this....
"Richard Semrau and Rodney Alexander have the experience to make an immediate impact up front.
Semrau is a tall and surprisingly athletic redshirt freshman..."

Does he know the combined "experience" he is referring to is exactly a total of 63 MINUTES, AND FOUR SHOTS TAKEN against a couple of weak early season opponents last year?
The guy also says Carlwell will battle for minutes off the bench.
Hmmm....Carlwell although eligible for all games last year, played so little as a freshman, that the only scholarship player who played any less was Semrau, who reshirted after just 5 games! I am not saying these guys couldn't have good years, but to rate the Illini this high is counting on production from freshmen, jucos, and extremely inexperienced players, something that is a real long shot.

Also want to mention... with UIUC checking in at #33 and #4 in the B10... I guess it leaves Indiana, Ohio St and Michigan St to round out the top 3. Which also leaves Iowa and Northwestern to fill out the bottom 2 spots. So, yikes - didn't realize Iowa was expected to be THAT bad this season.
