Scholarship grid

Here is the updated grid, thanks to shaunguth--

Looks like a lot of juniors.
Here is the link to the recruiting board where it is posted--

Looks good, thanks. I knew it was posted in there someplace, but I couldn't find it with just my feeble first attempt. Also, I thought it was more relevant now and I wanted to ensure it was up to date. Thanks again.

With Austin's signing, 07-08 is complete. 08 - 09 is also complete provided Crawford, Buycks, and West honor their commitments. Hopefully we'll make the NCAA's again this coming season, and that will surely help replacing the 7 juniors for 09 - 10. Congrats to JL and his staff.

I realize that scholarships are year to year. However, there has been a local junior that has been talked about many times on this and other boards. How can BU go after him if the '07-'08 scholarships are filled? I know there will be roster movement before then, but many players verbally commit before their senior year of high school. Jim Les can't go into this year saying that one of his guys with eligibility remaining won't be here the following year.

Are the only wildcards right now DW grades and Buycks going the prep school route?

It's a nice problem to have considering the past rosters this decade.

Bradley can still sign the "local junior" next fall if they want, since Dwight Buycks has not signed a LOI, and may fall through.

What about XC? I know he's said all the right things but isn't he in basically the same boat as Buycks. I know they are in differing levels of school but their situations are similar. Is is just assumed that XC will follow through on his commitment and that Buycks is still up in the air?

A lot of things can happen between now and then and we are still in on some people besides that local junior, such as D Green, who would be a great player for BU from what understand. However, I really hope we retain Buycks, It sounds like he is a great player who wants to be at BU.

Regarding Buycks and Crawford-

Those are good questions, but I don't think anyone knows the answer right now. Even the coaches do not know if XC or Buycks will be here in the fall of 2008. So it is necessary to continue to recruit for our needs, and with Jeremy Crouch leaving after 2007-2008, we could use another pure shooter type like, oh perhaps a Matt Roth. So I expect the recruiting to continue, and if Roth wishes to commit, we consider him vs. the unknown status of those other 2. I'd say sign MR in that case.

I know BU will keep recruiting. It's just a timing issue. Sort of like when Tyrone Cole-Scott announced he was coming to BU. At the time, Jassey hadn't announced he was leaving, Buycks hadn't announced that he didn't qualify and Fears was still on board. It got people talking because all of the scholarships were accounted for at that moment. There were rumors and opinions, but nothing official.

I think that same circumstance is going to happen if a recruit entering his senior year gives a verbal commitment over this summer. It'll get people talking and posting because the grid is supposedly full.

Good analysis coach. I suspect that if Collins has a good year and works out XC may...

The 3 guys on this scholarship grid that are slated to come in next year are all fairly iffy to make it to BU, IMO. I think if we get 1 of the 3 to actually come here next year (preferrably one of the two guards...), it would be a good result.

XC...It just didn't appear to me that he progressed much in his first year at Yuba, and I just don't think he fits our needs for next year quite as much now. David Collins fills a similar role for the next two years, and I think Anthony Thompson may be ready in a couple years to be the next long 6'11" - 7' type of guy... Don't get me wrong...you can never have too many good 7-footers, but XC would have to show a ton of development in his sophomore year at Yuba for me to think he would be able to provide an upgrade on the frontline to Collins, Thompson, Egolf, Austin, or even Singh over the two years he would be eligible to be here...I just think we have brought some good big players in the current class and I think that guards need to be the priority in the next couple of recruiting classes. I would say that we would pass on XC unless he turns into an absolute beast this season...

Buycks...would love to see him honor his commitment after a year of prep school...but I think it is highly unlikely. We will see...but if he is as good as the staff thinks he is, I think he will open a lot of eyes this coming year...and although he may have some sense of loyalty to his verbal to BU, if good BCS schools bring offers to the table, I could hardly blame the kid for taking that opportunity.

West...I would say out of the three, we have the best chance at retaining this kid. But again...it is just a verbal at this point. He basically played 3rd fiddle on one of the best HS teams in the country last year, and this year he will have more of a chance to shine, since one of the big scorers from his team went off to BC this year. With Draymond Green as his teammate, there will be tons of BCS suitors at every game of his this year. If West takes advantage of his bigger role in the offense in his senior year, there will no shortage of BCS offers for him to weigh against his verbal to BU. Maybe he is dead set on BU and will honor his verbal regardless of who enters the picture this year, but again, if a school like UNC, Duke, Kentucky, etc. comes in and says 'we want you to run our offense next year', I certainly couldn't blame the kid for making that decision either...

It will be interesting to follow Buycks and West throughout the year...I think it would be a huge boost to the program if we could secure a LOI from one of them (both would be a dream...)...We lost Fears, and we are losing some good guards after this season, so we need to keep bringing quality replacements in to help sustain our success...Buycks and West would definitely fit that description...

We will try to track them as closely as possible here on BradleyFans. And I wouldn't count XC out yet, I know the coaches aren't.
It is typical for 1st year jucos to get a lot less playing time than the 2nd year guys. The coaches there want to showcase their sophs since it's their one chance to land a scholarship offer, and the success a school like Yuba has with moving players on to a 4-year school is often the top recruiting draw a coach can use to reload each year. So XC will get a lot more playing time and be a more featured part of the team there next year.

I worry about Buycks actually coming too... But who's to say we don't hit the Sweet Sixteen again, thereby making him not worry too much about the BCS issue.

You heard it here first......
Xavier Crawford will be a 15 points/10 rebounds-guy next season for Yuba.
We will be very fortunate to land him, as is the case with Buycks as well.
Maybe the fact Buycks is now in California helps us, as lots of the midwestern recruiters are going to lose track of him.

Lastly..........if you're listening Matt Roth........
Commit NOW or you might just end up at Indiana State...or even worse....

The reverse of some of these thoughts would be true also - if BU tanks next year and I'm in HS, Prep School or a JUCO, I might decide to go elsewhere. In addition, if BU makes a big NCAA run, everyone likes to be with a winner and all three might want to follow through with their verbal commitments.

There are also players who get homesick, don't like their playing time or don't like the coach and leave. It happens all the time. So really, BU needs to keep recruiting, if for no other reason than to keep the name out there.
