Postgame thread- Bradley 76 Iowa State 66 - BU's RPI soars

Just got back to our hotel from the Wells Fargo Arena. What a nice stadium. Too bad Drake couldn't have worked a deal to play there, I think it would elevate their program.

Iowa State fans, like Drake and UNI fans (maybe all Iowans?) are great people and very friendly. They seem willing to be patient with their team, and are very supportive.

Big win for Bradley!

Will Franklin played like an All American today. He played fantastic defense.
And, of course, he was tremendous on offense all game. Every time Iowa State tried to make a run, Will was one of the Braves who made big plays defensively and offensively to shut the door.

Bradley shot better than 50% on the road, and although ISU seemed to get the rebounding edge much of the game, Bradley got several big rebounds down the stretch to help seal the win.

Look what happened to Bradley's RPI--

They jumped from 118 to 75 after the win, and passed up 5 other MVC teams.

The MVC remains #2 overall-

I wonder how much the isu lose will hurt the league standings today........so far it hasn't hurt much! :?

This game was pretty tense for me. Iowa St. wouldn't go away, and when the lead was cut to 6 or 7, I was afraid Bradley would fall apart as in the previous games.

It's heartening to see the Braves play tough throughout the game for this win. They got the defensive stops, and then worked the lead back to double digits. Offense for some players was unusually off, but the defense was solid for everyone.

Matt Salley had 10 rebounds, and JJ Tauai had 8.
Jeremy was 1-7 from 3-point range, but he was credited with 2 steals, and his defense lead to a couple more turnovers.
The defense that ISU played focusing on Jeremy had a lot to do with the open shots Will and others got.
Zach was limited by fouls again, but this time Bradley played as well or better when Zach was on the bench.

I had the opposite approach. I never felt this game was in doubt. I guess I don't respect Iowa State enough right now.

I just checked and the RPI for Bradley has climbed slightly more, to 73. What a great day for the Braves! The trip home is surely a lot happier!

Look what's happening that helps Bradley's RPI.

Rutgers won....They have now won 4 IN A ROW
DePaul won.....They have now won 4 OF THEIR LAST FIVE
UIC won.........They have now won 4 OF THEIR LAST FIVE
Even Florida A&M has won 4 in a row!
Michigan State will likely win today...They will have now won 4 in a row. When this game is final, BU's RPI might edge up a bit more.
And Illinois should beat Belmont tomorrow to go to 3 in a row and help BU further.
Even Tennessee Tech is on a winning streak!

BU needs to close out the non-conference schedule with wins over Loyola and Southern Miss both of whom have decent RPI's (49 and 77).

Nice--
And I believe this makes Jim Les 6-3 lifetime against Greg McDermott.

If BU can continue to alter its style to beat opponents, I can't help but see that JL deserves the COY for doing what he's done with the loss of 75% of all the teams scoring and rebounding.

This games was a great game considering BU's 3 point shot was off, except for WF who looked all-world. Salley also looked pretty active and I was especially encouraged by his dramatically improved FT shooting compared to what he looked like in the first few games this year. The Bradley players hustled on D and made several key steals at timely moments. I was impressed with how BU fought off several of ISU's runs in the 2nd half. JL made some good coaching calls, especially when he got the refs to review if JC had gotten possession on the near steal at the start of the 2nd half. He hadn't, therefore the time clock did not reset and ISU turned it over on a shot clock violation. ISU was playing pretty physical under the boards but it seemed Zach was geting cllaed for some touch fouls. If ISU had not intentionally sent BU to the line so many times in the last 2-3 minutes, there would have been a sizeable imbalance in the number of FT attempts each team took. Ruff struggled with the shot today and made a couple of wild shots driving to the hoop in the second half.

Iowa State is not a bad team and should be hard to beat in their conference home games.

Just as soon as the Evansville and Drake games are complete, the Valley RPIs jump again.

Now the RPIs are as follows:

Wichita 2
SIU 10
Missouri State 29
Bradley 71
ISU 78
Ind State 85
Creighton 94
Evansville 95
UNI 98
Drake 104

They could all be under 100 by tomorrow!

ABSOLUTELY!

Loyola is gonna be a big one!

S Miss will be much easier.

Too bad about the Creighton loss, or all the Valley teams would be under 100. Who would have thought they would be the bottom rpi team? They were picked to win the league!

What a game by Will. This is a kid we almost did not offer and I cant imagine Bradley without Will the last two years. He played great in the NCAAs last year and with Ruff we have the best point guard combo in the MVC.

If Salley can play like this the rest of the year we can make the post season in a year no one gave us a chance!!!!!

I wouldn't necessarily say USM will be a much easier game than Loyola. Sure, they played and feasted on cupcakes prior to Saturday's loss against a good Alabama team, but they got a 20 point deficit down to 8 in the waning stages of the game in Mobile, then lost by 13. Before he got into trouble at Iowa State, Larry Eustachy had a proven track record of success. He and their fans were pleased with the effort the Golden Eagles put up against the Crimson Tide. Going up against a veteran Bama squad, USM started 3 freshmen and 2 sophomores :-o. They're trying to build a basketball tradition in Hattiesburg and seem to be off to a good start. The game against Bradley will be their first true road test of the season, and certainly their biggest non-conference contest after Alabama. After us and prior to CUSA play, the only other "name" school on the Golden Eagle schedule is Auburn, which will be a home game for USM. Even with most students home on break, the kind of crowd Bradley will draw next week is something USM aspires to do.

Greg McDermott really thought they were robbed on this play.
(see photo link below)
But by the time Zach Andrews grabbed the rim, the ball had bounded away and was not going to have any chance of going in.
Even if he gets this call, the Cyclones pick up maybe one point and still lose.
The Iowa State fans moaned the entire game as if they were being jobbed by the refs, but they were the ones who chose the refs!

BU's RPI climbed just a bit more late last night and now sits at 70.
creighton drops to 103, the lowest RPI in the Valley.
