Another D1 job opened yesterday, but will be filled today. Pepperdine coach Tom Asbury announced his retirement. Associate head coach Marty Wilson will be named head coch today.-

These are the D1 jobs open, in addition to Bradley (feel free to add to the list if I am missing any)-
Manhattan
Wyoming
Northern Illinois
Florida Gulf Coast
Kennesaw State
Texas Tech
Towson
Eastern Washington

Well we have this going for us...beside the beautiful weather at FGCU and the allure of a Major Conference at Texas Tech...we have IMO the best coaching vacancy in DI ball.

As Carl from Caddyshack would say "So I got that going for me..."

I agree...... unless Oklahoma and NC State open soon. Georgia Tech will be open as well as all indications are that Hewitt has been bought out for $3 Mill.

I've heard some rumors of Phil Martelli being let go from St. Josephs after the season, thanks to a horrible season and numerous player defections in recent years. Boy how his program has fallen since his team was #1 about a decade ago!

I'd have to believe that NC State job is now open. Tough place to recruit. You have NC, Duke and WF right in your back yard, which have more to offer in the same conference. NC State needs to find a personality to make it work IMO. Steve Lavin would have been a great fit IMO. Quin Snyder would be a good fit for them. He has redeemed himself enough where The San Antonio Spurs have him coaching their ABA affiliate.

And Paul Hewitt was officially let go by Georgia Tech-

I wouldn't mind this guy. His record in the tough ACC was mediocre, but his record while coaching Siena was pretty good. I think he's a pretty good mid-major coach, and slightly better than average in a tough BCS conference. His $7 million buyout means we could probably afford him...... Of course, it all depends if his buyout allows him to coach elsewhere so soon.

Hewitt seems like a great recruiter, but in 11 season had only 1 winning record in conference. 190-162 overall. I know the ACC is tough and all, but you figure with all the talent he recruited he would be able to have a couple seasons above .500 in conference

He might not even be looking for a job, if he is getting a $7 million buyout

Valid concerns on the recent record, but he dominated at Siena prior to Georgia Tech. I think you're right though - A 7M buyout may send him into the ESPN studio for a year or two, and/or the summer basketball camp circuit. I know if someone gave me 7M I would be taking some time off... ;)

Another day, another opening. This time at Utah.

http://msn.foxsports.com/collegebasketball/story/Utah-Utes-coach-Jim-Boylen-fired-031211

He took them to the Dance a couple seasons ago, and his overall record was 69-60 but exactly .500 in conference overall.

(don't know if this has been posted) Barry Rohrssen to the fired list.

I don't see him as a HC candidate here, but considering his successful time at Pitt which included three S16 appearances (which Manhattan had probably banked on to bring in some wins and recruits) he would be a great person to have to recruit the East Coast. But MC took a gamble. I certainly hope JH can cut his teeth before jumping directly into head coaching. No doubt he's great at recruiting, but as we have seen with MC it's not everything.

He had some guys transfer out last year, including one of their leading scorers in former BU recruit Marshall Henderson. I think the writing was on the wall there.

Aren't you surprised though that he was not retained as they move to the Pac 12? I certainly am. He was an asst. at Michigan St., so he (like RG) had ties to the Midwest. If anything, administration should have given him the chance to recruit with a new conference.

Still had a few years left on his contract. http://utahutes.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/051209aaa.html

I don't follow Utah closely enough to know. It sounded like things started heading south last year. Perhaps they viewed the transition to the Pac 12 as a good time to 'start fresh'? New conference, new coach. But like I said, I don't follow Utah closely enough to really say one way or the other.

The intersting thing about Hewitt is that despite that mediocre conference record, he did make the NCAA Tournament five times at Georgia Tech. But that did not matter as he only finished in the top 3 of the ACC once:

Hmmm. Sounds a lot like Les's record at Bradley. But the difference is that Hewitt made all of those NCAA Tournaments and that STILL wasn't good enough! If Les had made even just two more NCAA Tournaments during his nine year stint as Bradley coach, he would have a job here for life, and we would not be having a lot to talk about on the boards right now outside of next year's recruits and NCAA bubble talk!

a groundswell of fan opinion starting to call for Indiana's Tom Crean to go...
they use Keno getting canned after Just 3 years as their lead....

I'm sorry. This is starting get WAY out of hand! I can't believe all of these coaches getting canned for not turning horrendous programs around in three years or less! Whatever happened to patience here?! Many programs that are as messed up as Indiana's is usually cannot be turned around in that short of a time. And bouncing coaches at that frequency just delays the process of rebuilding that much more.

Then you have coaches like Paul Hewitt and Bruce Weber that get flack from their fans and/or fired for not winning enough games DESPITE making the NCAA Tournament quite often! What do these people want? Not every team can become a Kansas and Duke because, quite frankly, there is only room for so many of those type of teams. The rest that everyone else can hope for, and a more reasonable goal is making the NCAA Tournament maybe 3 or 4 times a decade, and staying above .500 in most seasons. Jim Les did all that outside of multiple tournaments, but he kept the team in good shape during most of his run. And Hewitt and Weber, well I don't know what else they can do!

I hope AD's and fans all over the country realize that this constant coaching carosel has to stop sooner or later, because unless a program is mired in decade long mediocrity, there's no reason for teams to keep firing coaches every two or three years! This only serves to make mediocre and even very solid programs worse.

It doesnt have to stop if people want to pay it...

and in hewitts case, once again he was over .500 one or two times in 11 years in the league
