Wish List - Our Next Coach

This guy unfortunately doesn't exist. Although we would all like for our team to be up-tempo, physical, rebound, press, and have depth it is nearly impossible to play this way. I think every coach in america would love to have a team like this. Typically up-tempo teams are comprised of smaller and less physical players, resulting in less rebounds etc.. Also, given our recruiting history, it is hard to find depth of physical athletic players. The fact is a team that plays up-tempo, pressing style, that is also physical and rebounds can't sustain that type of energy for a full game without depth. The guys who have the ability to build a team this way are already taken by the likes of the Big East, ACC, etc.

With all this in mind, I would like a younger, up and coming coach as opposed to coaches with a track record of not being able to build a team in this manner. The downside of course is that an up and coming coach, that can prove he is a winner, likely will move on to the big boys!

For perspective, here's what Lickliter did at Butler (and Stevens first three years for player carry over):

2001-02 26 6 .813 Todd Lickliter
2002-03 27 6 .818 Todd Lickliter - Sweet 16
2003-04 16 14 .533 Todd Lickliter
2004-05 13 15 .464 Todd Lickliter
2005-06 20 13 .606 Todd Lickliter
2006-07 29 7 .806 Todd Lickliter - Sweet 16 - lost to Florida (Nat'l champion)
2007-08 30 4 .882 Brad Stevens - 2nd round
2008-09 26 6 .813 Brad Stevens - 1st round
2009-10 33 5 .868 Brad Stevens - FF

It's hard to say how much "better" Butler got after he left.

Matta was there for one year between Barry Collier (Butler's AD now) and Lickliter.

I think you can say he benefited some from player carry over, got his own guys in and repeated that success before he left for Iowa.

2003-06 really scares me!

Especially when you consider how much better Stevens did with his talent after he was gone...

Just about anyone who watched Butler play Bradley after Stevens was there noticed a BIG difference...

Also, it is apparent that Stevens is a much better recruiter...that being the case though, does that make Lick a better coach because he did a whole lot with only Graves and Green.

Those are the things I would need to be answered for me to even inquire about him...plus like I said, I don't really appreciate the style he plays as it's similar to the guy we fired before the previous coach...

74-101 , you must be joking if you want someone with that record as a head coach in a lesser conference, had his chance and failed.

Yes, hiring Judson would be a complete joke! The guy is a career assistant who failed at a lower level.

Also, forget Pat Knight and his massive ego and no talent.

Lusk

Lusk

From GoldandBlack.com:

If Bradley doesn't hire Purdue associate head coach Paul Lusk this off-season, someone else is going to. Of that I'm just about certain.

Lusk has had 'head coach' written all over him from the day he walked in the door at Purdue and his time has arrived, just as it did for Cuonzo Martin a few seasons ago.

Lusk, being an Illinois native with ties to the states of Illinois, Iowa and Indiana and a Missouri Valley Conference professional upbringing would seem like an ideal candidate for the MVC school, one that will have no shortage of great candidates.

As he did for Martin, Painter will be lobbying on his long-time assistant's behalf, if he's not already done so. This is the natural progression of things when you're a program as successful as Purdue's has been.

This is Lusk's time. He's in no hurry to leave Purdue, I'm sure, but head coaching jobs don't come along daily. You have to strike while the iron's hot and his should be blazing right now.

But as I said, if Bradley doesn't hire him, someone else will.

Southern Illinois, where Lusk played and coached, will open as soon as SIU can afford to buy Chris Lowery out, by all accounts. Lusk would be an obvious choice there.

The Midwest coachng carousel will spin around the state of Illinois, where jobs may open left and right.

Other Valley openings could crop up if Wichita State's Gregg Marshall moves on or if Cuonzo Martin moves up already. Again, he's in no hurry, but he's a hot name right now, so you never know.

There will be a number of Big Ten assistants vying for good mid-major jobs this hiring season, with Lusk joining Michigan State's Mark Montgomery, Wisconsin's Greg Gard and Illinois' Jerrance Howard among those who may be particularly popular.

This year is Marshal's and Martin's best chances to "move up" to another coaching position. If they don't get any sniffs, they may get stuck here a while longer. Next year, neither of the WSU or MSU squads will be close to where they are this year. I could see one of them gunning for the Texas Tech job.

On the other hand, UNI will be rebuilding next season. Makes you wonder if Jacobson might get the itch.

These are two "hot" names right now and I think they'd both be foolish if they didn't move on.

Marshall should go to NC State or Arkansas (he recruits the Southeast well) before he gets "caught" at WSU, and Martin should pull a "Keno" if offered because his cupboard is going to be bare.

Marshall is the one who should bolt...this was supposed to be their year and even they thought they'd win the title, the tournament, or both the last couple years...he has choked and he should be thanking his lucky stars if someone comes along and yanks him....and it should take him 2.5 to say he accepts...

And I'm confused? Where is Pelphrey going?!

Also, I have heard that Martin has assembled a pretty solid recruiting class so they'll be better than anticipated next year, especially with Weems still in the fold...

That said, give us Paul Lusk!

Look at the Keady tree...Weber, Lavin, Stallings, Painter, Martin....all pretty successful and each now holds a conference title

Can I say I like your logic with Lusk. Keady tree has been very successful.

I'm also a huge Tom Izzo fan and it if we could grab a MSU assistant I would not be disappointed. I just do not believe we need someone with mid-west ties. Yes, we should get an assistant with mid-west ties. I've never ever said we should not recruit close to home.

Keno Davis (Providence, Drake) and Jeff Capel (Oklahoma, VCU) are both on a very hot seat right now and could be available. I like both...but would be concerned that either would jump at the next high-major offer they would receive.

Oklahoma is a pretty good gig, if you can get it. Football school, but they have an awesome campus and great facilities.

However, I would be beyond shocked if Marshall even gets a sniff if that job opens.

Martin would be much more likely.
