Cubs near Matt Garza trade?

Well I don't follow baseball that closely, but I don't get it for the Cubs. I don't think they will be good for a while and the Pitcher and SS they traded sound like the top minor league prospects they have. I thought they would be trying to build up the minors.

I will consider the offseason a flop if they can't deal Carlos Z. He had a strong finish to the season and it is time to get what you can for him.

From what I have been reading, Archer is the key to the trade. We already have Castro at SS so I don't mind trading the SS prospect. It seems that the Rays got more depth type players than impact players in this deal. Time will tell.

So instead of losing 100 games the cubs will lose 95 now. I'm a cardinals fan, and I love the fact that Jim Hendry is still their GM. It just seems like the cubs will never learn that you can't just keep giving up prospects for guys who are already on the way out of their prime or only have a few years left. I guess part of it is they just have to make the fans think every year they're trying to win instead of just conceding that we have to rebuild and do things the right way.

Garza will be 28 years old this November. Hardly the age for a player beyond his prime. If you want to talk about aging pitchers, check out the roster of the Cardinals starting pitchers.

Don't like this trade at all. I'm not sure what the point of it is, as this will likely be a lost season anyways. I understand that Garza is under team control for another few years, but we gave up a lot of talent to the Rays. Archer was our #1 prospect and absolutely dominated AA last year. Lee is incredibly talented and I was looking forward to seeing either he or Castro move to second base in a few years to solidify our middle infield for years to come. Chirinos and Guyer are decent prospects, but aren't likely to project as more than a fourth outfielder or a backup catcher, and the Cubs also have Brett Jackson and Wellington Castillo. Regardless, I thought the point of a rebuilding season was to load up on prospects and try to eliminate big contracts. We're doing the opposite. Typical Cubs.

I hope the Cubs aren't done with strengthening their lineup and bullpen yet. Garza will be a good pitcher, but he will essentially replace Ted Lilly, and that makes the rotation a bit stronger.
But even if Carlos Pe?±a can replace the production of Derrick Lee, the Cubs still won't be much different than last year, will they?

Whether a person agrees or disagrees with this trade, bringing Garza here strengthens the pitching staff which is the place to start to rebuild this team. I agree with you that I think that the Cubs will look for another trade and I would not be surprised to see a pitcher from last years starting rotation traded.
