makes me wonder if he didn't get his way or get his perks, would he have the coach fired?? Dana better watch out.....
 
I wish BU had a supporter like Phil Knight. Nothing wrong with that. Last I saw Oregon was competing for the national title in football and a spanking brand new arena was built for their basketball program. Everyone knows that Nike is connected to Oregon.
 
CAT has been great and I do like that they have put money into the programs that will help them most! That is just smart. Also, the money is fungible which means other funds have been able to make its way towards the athletic department and their spanking new facilities but in no way have they matched what Phil has done for Oregon.

BTW theBUer Nice try for the dig! I still believe we need to be more concern about our academic reputation then sports. I'd like both as very few schools can pull off. Guns and butter

That's all well and fine. We could certainly win an NCAA title if we had the talent in our sports, but we're not a high-level research institution. Noam Chomsky is not going to come to Peoria to merely teach intro courses and some upper-division courses without much time or money for research.

Throw out my Nobel prize quote (that was more of an aspiration then reality but sometimes dreams do become true) and let's just think how BU can become a premier place of higher ed. Ever hear of shooting for the moon? You have to think big to get big. When your goals are small your achievement are small. BU has the right make up to become truly a nationally recognized University known for academics. If our basketball program follows suit, the better. Really who cares which came first, the chicken or the egg? We are in America whatever happened to thinking about achieving the impossible?

No doctoral programs, especially in the sciences and the humanities. That is why the professors who do a lot of research would not come here.

Also, there is no medical school nor law school (although the school wants a law school here, but that will take some time to develop a reputation if it comes to fruition).

Okay, he's an eccentric man. But Grinnell, which is out in the middle of Iowa cornfields (between Iowa City and Des Moines anyway) is a little slice of radical heaven.

And it's ironic that you want the brightest minds to come to Peoria, when you pretty much think they'd be miserable here. Pity them that they cannot sail off the Atlantic/Pacific or take a trip to Tahoe. :roll:

Did I say miserable? I'm not sure I even hinted that they would??? I was pointing out that P-town is a touch right of center. Am I wrong? I'm sure there would be a few right wing intellectuals that would find Peoria stimulating. One thing I never do is criticize conservative or liberal thinking. What I do criticize are the people that cannot change their mind once common sense and rational objectives are put in front of them. A dogmatic approach to anything never leads to long term success, IMHO.

BTW... Grinnel is a fine Liberal Arts school and Iowa has always been known for their acceptance of liberal teachings much more then central Illinois.

No bones about it, Peoria is not the most liberal place out there. But if Noam Chomsky did teach at BU, he wouldn't be far from Chicago, Chambana or Iowa City.

I would consider Peoria conservative democrat, not solidly republican but not solidly democrat. I'll leave it at that for this board...

Grinnell is kind of the exception more so than the rule in Iowa. A hippy outpost.

Given that they hired this guy who was Knight's friend then turned right around and let him go two years later --you gotta wonder what's going on......
It is kind of an enigma since it was well known that Kilkenny was still calling some shots after he left!

Kilkenny landed big $$ from Nike in his couple years there, dropped a few sports, and ran basketball coach Ernie Kent out...yet held on to him way too long -- much to the dismay of many Oregon fans.

in July they hired Rob Mullens as AD -- so this current great team they have isn't all due to Kilkenny...
