Creighton hires Steve Merfeld

Da Coach

It's not being reported publically yet, but sources say it's official. Steve Merfeld has been hired by Creighton as an assistant coach.

Can anyone now tell us why Merf was shown the door here? If only BP was so good at holding back a leak?

The Valley gets more and more interesting.

Another level of antagonism for the BU - Creighton rivalry next year.

BU Students will need to come up with another clever welcome for SM when Creighton comes to Peoria next season!

How come if we have naysayers claiming we don't have good players, good recruits, or good coaches -
when the other Valley teams are constantly trying to steal our players and recruits, and then go after our ex-coaches....?

Student section sign suggestion: What happens in Vegas stays in Omaha.

One of first things Dana Altman did after he got to Oregon --
was to go out and land a guard from Las Vegas.... a 5-9 kid that he was hoping to land at Creighton...Jonathan Loyd
Altman also says Matt Humphrey is "going to go" but is still trying to lure Josh Crittle back.

Here are some other signs...

"Creighton Bluejays: where the players run the team"

or

"Battling ISU and SIU for the title: Juco U!"

I lived down the street from Steve and his family for two years and on a personal level, are a wonderful family and I wish them nothing but the best. Great parents, great neighbors, very thoughful and friendly.

However, as a BU fan, it is tough to watch an assistant coach go to a rival team in the same conference. He will be very helpful to Creighton when it comes to scouting Bradley.

Still, I wish Steve nothing but the best.

OK... I have never met Merf. But, did he really help us that much as far as scouting the MVC etc when he was here? So far, his tenure in the MVC has not been very successful.

Merf had a better resume than anyone on the previous staff and was completely underutilized. He also had a personality conflict with the head coach. Props to both of them for taking the high road when the relationship deteriorated.

Juco U?
As I look at next year's roster, we will have a grand total of two players that came from JUCO (both of which were recruited by Altman BTW)...

Yikes....Witter, Carter are still there finsihing up, and you still have Ashford & Runnels, and you guys just signed Nared & Denson...but now they see little chance of playing so they'll go elsewhere...don't you have to agree, that's a lot of juco kids for a program that hardly had one over the past few years.....

wow - first-- that's not at all how I heard it -- little to do with "personality" only with "expectations and job requirements"...
and your praise is so different than how some people labelled Merf when he was OUR assistant...
I don't ever recall anyone actually promoting him that strongly on his "resume" and instead he took a little heat for it........

I agree with this statement... I am sure Merf is a nice guy, but I fail to see how he will be a difference maker to scout MVC teams for a school like Creighton. Yes he will know the tendencies of our players, but those tendencies will be realized by MVC coaches after let's say 4-5 games into the regular season.

You are counting guys who have no eligibility left and are finishing out the semester to graduate as members of next year's team? You do realize that Witter and Carter won't be able to play next year right?

As I said, for next season, barring any changes, CU will have 2 JUCOs on the roster.

How many Jucos will be on Bradley's roster next fall?

If we count Taylor Brown then 1 but he can hardly count. I'm not sure what anyone is getting at regarding JUCOs. I'm all for them if they can fill a need, period. I'm not sure why anyone is disparaging CU on this. Our Sweet 16 team had 3 JUCOs and a transfer. :-o

To refresh people's memories- this juco argument started several years ago when an ISU fan and poster claimed Bradley was Transfer U, and included juco transfers in his argument.

And yet, when comparisons were made to ISU, Bradley had fewer transfers and fewer jucos that ISU.

I remember that I just do think bringing CU to this argument has value. They seem to run a strong clean program and too me that is where the real value is. That is one of the reasons I like JL is because he stays above the trash out there and will not compromise. Any program the prescribes to this will always get a free pass from me.
