New ncaa tournament selection criteria

In between listening to Dickie V drone on about his beloved Dukies and God "AKA Coach K" last night on ESPN in the Duke blowout vs UNC, I heard of a new NCAA Tournament Selection Criteria Vitale, and other ESPN talking heads, were blabbering last night: "The Eye Test"!!!

After having abandonded overall record, conference record, Team RPI, Strength of Schedule, Conference RPI, and various computer and human polls to limit Mid Major at large bids, ESPN is now touting the EYE TEST as a means of determining which 'Bubble' teams should get at large bids to the NCAA Dance.

Best I could tell, the new ESPN "EYE TEST" means if you can see the name of a BCS or Big East team on the jersey it should be considered for an at large bid to the Dance!

They've talked about the eye test for a few years now.

Of course, they neglect to realize they can use the eye test on power conference teams that they see often, but that they can't apply it to mid-majors they don't get to see.

But as far as the selection committee is concerned, those guys DO watch mid-majors, go to games, and all that, so I trust the selection committee a little bit more.

Yeah, this irritating term has been thrown around on ESPN for several years now. To their credit though, most on ESPN seem to be saying that Northern Iowa passes the "EYE TEST" this year irregardless of which great teams they have beaten. But that seems to be the exception rather than the rule, and as you said, is just another excuse by the "talking heads" to limit the number of mid-majors obtaining at-large bids (I know they don't select the teams, but they certainly influence the selection committee by their commentary).

I have posted many times here over the years just how much I despise that term. I have no clue in the world what an "eye test" is, or just what factors go into this. Is it how fast the players run, how smooth their shots look, how tenacious their defense is? Maybe what color uniforms they wear? I don't know what the heck that is!

I just wish one of these schmucks would tell us what they mean by the "EYE TEST" and how the selection committee would incorporate it into their selection process.

Better yet, I just wish that "term" would go away for good!

...ESPN talking heads, were blabbering last night: "The Eye Test"!!!

they invented the rankings when that benefitted the BCS guys.,..then abandoned the rankings when midmajors benefitted...
they invented the RPI when it benefitted the BCS guys...............then abandoned the RPI when it benefitted midmajors....
now they have been talking the "eye test" for a year or so...purely becaue they do NOT have to justify their "eyes"...they can call it as they see it...and favor who they want..
it is simply the latest tool to use and favor the BCS guys....

Note the use of the "eye test" just in the past couple years, and presto - virtually NO midmajor at-large bids over that span...
coincidence??
