I personally dont think Depaul is a good career move for anyone. Rough conference with not so good facilities. Look at a guy like Norm Roberts at St John. The guys on the hot seat after making the Johnies competative again but its still not enough fast enough. There has to be more to Depaul's problems than just coaching. I mean christ they're in one of the biggest hot beds in the country and they cant get anyone with big time talent to committ. Depaul = a four year run ending in the coach going back to be an assistant or bolting for greener pastures aka Leito
I think you hit on the key problem- if Jerry Wainwright had been able to land even 1 Chicago area star player each year, regardless of how much better the team would have been, I think he would still be coaching there.
There is simply no reason why DePaul, facilities or not, can't be in competetion for some of the talent in the Chicago area.
Maybe they think Tracy Webster can recruit better? Or someone like Jerrance Howard? But I am sure they can do better than JW has done.
Think of all the great talent out of Chicago the last few years- not just superstars like Derick Rose and Sherron Collins, who probably would have still gone to higher programs than DePaul- but how about Evan Turner, Jacob Pullen, Mike Dunnigan, Josh Crittle, Iman Shumpert, Darius Smith, Brandon Paul, John Shurna, Chris Colvin, Diamond Taylor, and this year's crop of Jereme Richmond, Lenzell Smith, Ahmad Starks, Crandall head, Reggie Smith, Mike McCall, Ben Brust, and many more.
It's hard to believe, but since he was hired in 2005, Wainwright has landed only 1 Chicago area high school kid (Will Walker-Bolingbrook) in 5 years.
