Kansas Riots - more video and now police charges and investigations

tornado

More videos surface of the riots at Kansas and fights between the basketball players and footballers, and it is clear that some people were running for safety and feared what was going on.
Also, police have begun criminal investigations as they now believe crimes occurred...including one guy threatened to shoot a woman!!
So much for the silly and irresponsible statements right from the start that the police cannot get involved if there were no people complaining...
guess that concept simply wasn't true at all!
Miami Heat player and ex-KU player Mario Chalmers is now said to have been there and "was listed as another witness to the incident".

so the question has to be answered....why the total whitewash and all the stupid statements about how the police couldn't possibly bother with this, when NOW, MORE than a FULL WEEK later the cops are getting involved and arresting people and finding that battery, threats, and other crimes DID occur totally contrary to the ignorant statements earlier?

The guy arrested hung with all the Kansas basketball players and was pictured on their facebook pages.
"Facebook photos showed Lipscomb alongside such athletes as Tyshawn Taylor, Marcus Morris, Markieff Morris and Elijah Johnson."
http://www.kansan.com/news/2009/oct/02/arrest/?news

but here's what's odd...a guy on a Kansas State message board posted this way back on September 24...from a local police report...
"According to a University police report, a man was arrested after he threatened to shoot a woman in a parking lot near Jayhawker Towers about 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, an hour after an incident involving University athletes reportedly turned violent at the nearby Burge Union.
Capt. Schuyler Bailey, University police spokesman, said police do not think the criminal threat was related to the Burge Union incident.
Guy Lipscomb, a 19-year-old Lawrence resident, was booked into Douglas County Jail at 10:44 p.m. Tuesday on charges of making a criminal threat. Lipscomb was released Wednesday evening.
University police were also called to a parking lot near Jayhawker Towers about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday to disperse a group of about 20 congregating individuals. It was unclear whether these individuals were involved with either of the earlier incidents."

so eight days ago, they knew about this guy and arrested him, but made the statement then..that they did NOT think this was releated to the campus rioting caused by the basketball players.
Now, they find that it is!! so as usual, the cops casual and neglectful attitude caused an unnecessary delay and their surmises that favored the players turned out to be dead wrong.
surprise..........could a little protectionism of the players have been playing into this??

looks like Bill Self has totally lost control down there...the place is an absolute free for all...
and the campus is on full melt down with chaos reigning (a little literary license)

?driving drunk at 3:42AM? gimme a break...who's in charge down there?

with all that's gone on, riots, mob fights, drunken players shooting people with pellet guns, and rape charges...can they not keep these guys out of bars?

Here's a remarkable quotation driectly from their athletic web site...
"All althletes at KU sign a code of conduct. They will be held to that code."
...oh really? I needed a good belly laugh....

speaking of ridiculously soft discipline...anyone recall the oregon football player who blindsided and punched an opponent and was "suspended"?
Initially it was said they'd be tough on the guy and probably suspend him for the entire season, but guess what....he's back.....

Lastly, as if the other teams in the Big 12 needed any locker material for inspiration...
one of the Kansas Starters has predicted that Kansas won't even have any competition for the Big 12 this year...
Jacob Pullen says...
"We have the best team we've had since I've been here. I expect us to get deep into the tournament this year.
I'd like to get to the elite eight. The Sweet 16 would be good. I think we could win this conference too.

"I think it's between us and KU."

I believe in being strict but I felt the punishment for the Oregon player was WAY to harsh. I think OU made a rush to judgement based on all of the media pressure and realized this, after the fact. Now, I think OU is trying to find a way to ease this kid back onto the team without the media going ape$4!t once again. There is no need to ruin this kid's life just because he made a bad split-second decision (which in reality hurt no one).

The media has shown that they have the power to help get politicians both elected and impeached. Here, the media used their influence to force OU into a quick, harsh, and WRONG decision. I hope this kid gets his second chance.

I agree with you.

The kid ruined his own life by acting the way he did not only throwing the punch but acting like a lunatic afterwards. He spent the entire week talking trash about Boise and couldnt back it up on the field, gets called out and handles his own actions by throwing a punch. It was pretty apparent Oregon was going to reinstate him, if they were serious about kicking him off the team he would not be practicing with the practice squad.

I find it very interesting that his parents and a lawyer had to get involved right after the incident.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4527376

Something tells me if a decison with a possiblity for reinstatement was not met, a certain card would have been thrownout.

The guy did what he did, but the school did not do anything close to runining Blounts life, he handled that pretty well himself. But, in the end he will get to play and Oregon will get to be a full strength for the last part of their Pac-10 schedule and a game with USC.

Always wonder what the final outcome would have been if Blount would have been the one punched and the one who punched would have went completely out of control after the punch... I dont think there would have been any talk of reinstatement.

The police are saying...
"... brawls involving Kansas basketball and football players has become the subject of a criminal investigation...
Public Safety Office Maj. Chris Keary said a disorderly-conduct investigation has been opened on the incident that occurred outside Burge Union about 6:50 p.m. on Sept. 22.
The report will be sent to the city prosecutor to determine whether additional charges will be filed."

these events happened 10-11 days ago...and for the past week and a half the police said repeatedly they were not going to arrest anyone .
They even gave reasons such as "nobody has filed a complaint" or that "nobody appears to have been injured".

but now..almost two weeks after the riots, they are opening investigations and talking about further arrests!
it's almost as if they knew they'd be forced to do this but intentionally stalled for the sake of Bill Self's guys!

The latest review of surveillance tapes says this......
"We have enough information to write up an incident report"
"Several basketball players are identified in the report, though not specifically as witnesses or victims: Sherron Collins, Mario Little, Marcus Morris,
Markieff Morris, Thomas Robinson and Elijah Johnson, as well as director of basketball operations Brett Ballard"

"The report will be sent to the city prosecutor to determine whether additional charges will be filed"
http://www.kansascity.com/sports/story/1485949.html

this should be funny if there are more charges.......watch the whitewash begin....we're talking 80% of the #1 ranked team in the nation, here...involved in mob action, fights, and riots.

btw-- forget the talk of Tyshawn Taylor getting suspended or sitting out...
....today's paper talks about him in practice as if nothings happened!
http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2009/oct/03/long-last-kus-reed-dethroned-boot-camp/

The kid from Oregon has nothing and I mean nothing on those guys from Kansas. If they suspended the Oregon player for a few games which counts more in football you would think that the Kansas players should be out longer.

Kansas held their media day yesterday and a lot of their opponents' message boards have funny comments about how the National Guard would be present to keep riots from breaking out and the players would all be wearing surveillance ankle monitors... ;)

Interesting though that media questions to the team members were screened, and there was no talk of the riots...and one newspaper noted
that the questions were easy ones...
"Self was lobbed one soft toss after another during his press conference in Hadl Auditorium"
(again, Self repeatedly refers only to the issues as "kids making mistakes" - and never actually says the players were in the wrong and committed crimes!)

One local report claimed that the Kansas program had been unfairly
"dragged through the mud, muck and mayhem of message boards.."

really....so us folks on the message boards just made up unfair muck & stuff about them??
Geez....if anything, most of the nation doesn't really care, and most message boards only had a mere mention of the riots and fight...and the lack of any discipline.

followup on the football player from Oregon that threw the post-game punch to the face of an opponent..

He was initially suspended indefinitely, then said to be done for the season...

Guess what...before the season's barely half over, the kid is now re-instated...so what does that tell you...they need the guy!

The kid is remorseful and the penalty did not fit the crime here. He has done everything he has been asked and this has been in the making for a few weeks. I'm all for giving this guy a break. Not withstanding last Saturday, I'd have to say Oregon has done pretty good without him!;-)

What makes you think they need him?

Anyone who watches college football knows this name ---> LaMichael James.

He's the redshirt freshman that took over for Blount this season. All he has done is rushed for 1043 yards in only 8 games. For comparison purposes Blount had 1002 last season in 13 games.

James ran for 183 yards against USC a few weeks ago. USC!!!

There are only 11 players who have more rushing yards on the season than James has in all of FBS football.

Oregon had won 7 straight since their opening week loss to Boise State, where Blount was the starter. They lost this past weekend at Stanford to blow their 7 game winning streak. James ran for 126 and had 4 catches for 89 yards.

I personally don't think they miss Blount a bit. I also didn't think he deserved to be suspended for the entire year based on his actions in the Boise State game either.
