Article on Odiakosa, ISU, and new redshirts in the Pantagraph

Here is another bit of news about ISU from the Pantagraph-
Guard Kenyon Smith, who originally committed to ISU last year, but did not end up getting cleared academically, is now at a juco, Lincoln College, and plans to return to ISU next year-

But the Pantagraph article does not address the obvious question- where is the scholarship going to come from?
Jordan Threloff's verbal commitment gives Coach Jankovich 13 scholarship players in the 2010-2011 class. So if Smith comes too, they would be one scholarship over the limit.
 
and one note about redshirting...the column says...
"Players can compete in ISU's scrimmage against Loyola on Nov. 7
and an exhibition game against Quincy on Nov. 11 and still be redshirted,
as long as they don't play in a regular-season game."

but this is not completely accurate...
the only players who can compete in exhibitions and still be eligible to redshirt are players who are NEW to D-I.
All other players lose the ability to redshirt as soon as they appear even in an exhibition game.
(this does not count medical redshirting)

anyway...if a couple scholarship kids redshirt, then it ties up scholarships on players who are not contributing...so it has its downside.
 
Jank has that team going in the right direction. As soon as they make the NCAA tournament he's gone. Someone will look at his record there (which is fluff for obvious reasons) and see they used to be terrible and he made them into an NCAA tournament team; they'll jump all over that. I hate the way he schedules but they are still a good team, and will be a good team in the future I believe, as long as he's there.
 
I agree that they have some talented young players and recruits, so they will be good for the future as well as this year. But if Jankovich wants to boast of an NCAA appearance, they better hope they win the MVC Tournament this year, because:
1) they won't get an at-large bid with their terrible schedule this year, and
2) after losing their 3 senior leaders this year, Eldridge, Odiakosa, and Phillips, IMO with their younger and inexperienced players it could take Jank another 2 or 3 years to get back to the level of being a potential NCAA team.

If he keeps scheduling like he's proven he likes to do, in a couple more years, he could be the winningest coach in NCAA history (wins per season) without an NCAA bid.

I've been saying this all along, but just don't see them making the NCAA tournament this year. And king o is gone next year.

It'll be interesting...
they are NOT deep at any position...and their only experience anywhere are seniors who'll be gone next year...

sure they return 3 starters, but so do almost all the MVC teams...

and ISU returns only a little over 40% of their scoring..and well under half of their minutes played return..among some of the lower ranking teams in the Valley...
add to that only three returning players played more than 250 minutes total (BU has six such players, Creighton has seven, UNI has seven, and WSU has nine)..and they are NOT deep OR experienced at any position....with about a dozen new guys on the roster.
If Dinma goes out, they have freshman as the backup, and if the PG Phillips goes out, then little used SG Rubin backs up, and if Eldridge goes out...whoa...the top returing SG behind OE would be Rubin at 1.5 ppg!

and as noted, there's not a chance in creation of getting an at large bid, as they won ALL their non-conference games last year and didn't get a sniff for an at large bid...so they can't do any better than that if their schedule is even far worse!!
They could end up a laughingstock if they actually lose some of those games to D-II's and directional schools.

Is this a new rule?

Dinma played in an exhibition game at the start of the 2006-2007 season and was still able to redshirt.
 
I believe it is a new rule from maybe two years ago...

here are a few links confirming that this is the rule:

"During a student-athlete's initial year of enrollment...
he may compete in preseason exhibition contests and preseason scrimmages
without counting such competition as a season of competition"

in other words, he can still redshirt after playing in exhibitions but only if he is in his initial year of NCAA eligibility.

Wasn't there a kid at SLU in Rick Majerus' first year that was held out of a preseason game because he wasn't a freshmen and was going to be redshirted?
 
Thanks Tornado for the links. I knew what the rule was for freshmen, but wasn't sure about others. I knew Dinma played as a freshman, and then played in a exhibition game as a soph, before redshirting. So that rule has to be new since the 2006-2007 season.

I don't know, but Femi John did play in an exhibition last year and then DID redshirt

Absolutely...I think we should start a petition to have them ex-communicated from the Valley:lol: WE would never schedule and lose to a UMKC or Plattville:oops:
 
I checked the schedule for the past years, and Bradley has never played UW-Platteville in an official game.



Of course, everyone knew that already- it was an exhibition game! It didn't count, and the NCAA doesn't consider exhibition games in any way.
So let's please stop bringing up the UWP game as some example of poor scheduling, or Bradley losing to a lower opponent.:?

I just checked ISU's schedule and they don't play any D-II's in regular season games.

They do play an exhibition vs. Quincy.

Losing to a directional school could stink for anyone. But Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky are all directional schools. No shame in losing to them IMO.
 
As if Bradley is the only team to ever lose in an exhibition game. :roll:

Michigan State (then ranked in the Top 10 in the country) lost to Div II Grand Valley State in an exhibition game in November of 2007.
 
After looking it up, Dustin McGuire was the SLU player I was thinking of. He has since tranferred to Northern Kentucky. He redshirted as a sophomore at SLU when the coaching change happened.

It seems like most of the talk of redshirting comes from the fans. Very few guards ever redshirt and you have to basically be a big man project or have a lot of sophomores and juniors ahead of you to redshirt. Creighton and SIU did use this tool effectively earlier in the decade to build their program.
