Break Out Year For AT?

AZ BU Fan

New member
First time I saw AT at BU (I think it might have been a Red-White game), I thought to myself, kid has good hands, long arms, gets up and down the court, and looked to have quick feet...add some weight and experience and presto, POB II :D

Now in his third year, "Insiders", any early hints AT may surprise us and have a modest "break out" this year with interior defense and rebounding....or are we still a year away with him as a redshirt junior/senior?

I always had the feeling WE was more of a 4 (seems to like baseline jumpers and moves around on offense vs back to the basket) AND the pair eventually would be good together on the floor:idea:

OR - Am I all wet :doubt:

We gotta wait and see. But early reports are he's stronger, and less intimidated, and looks a lot better. He'll play more, and is rebounding well.

We'd be a pretty BIG team if we could play both of them.

I would love, just for the sake of seeing it, to see a lineup like this sometime: Dodie at the point (6'2?), AW at the 2 (6'5), TB at the 3 (6'6) WE at the 4 (6'9) and AT the 5 (6'10). Not saying this should be the lineup regularly... or ever, really... but it would be big!

To go along with what you said a little about AT having quick feet, he had/has some very good post moves during the r/w game.

After two seasons of nothing with No Injuries as a excuse, I think you are wet BUT hope you are dry by the end of the season:wink:

I look for him to contribute a little more but next year will probably be his break out year. Let"s face it, he hardly played last season so he obviously still has a long way to go to be the kind of player we hope he will eventually be for BU.

If he could give the Braves those stats in just 15 minutes he would deserve more playing time. Would be nice.

If he did that over 15 minutes per night he would be looking at a double double per game over 40 minutes and all MVC and wondering about going pro early. Approximently 16 points and 10 boards over 40 minutes.

7 points and 4 boards in 15 minutes a night is asking for alot from someone who has never played.

All I want from the 5 position nightly is between 16-12 points and 10+ boards. I think those numbers are pretty realistic between Prosser, Singh, Thompson and Egolf nightly.

If one of those or a combo of those 4 can step up and exceed that nightly even better.

I'm just hoping that AT can prove himself enough to see the floor on a nightly basis. Let's not get ourselves to far ahead here. He barely saw the floor last year and when we did it usually was not during any meaningful minute. Also let's not do the same thing with this year's freshmen big. Let it be a wonderful surprise if they can contribute consistently. I expect 10-15 mpg for SS and the bulk of the rest will go to WE at the 5. If AT can give us 5 mpg of active defensive ball I'll be satisfied.

I see your point houston. But I think it's a lot easier to put up those numbers in limited minutes when you're fresh versus extrapolating over a whole game. JMO

Hopefully Brazil was no fluke-if it wasn't what a fun year ahead. SS may end up hardly seeing the floor but only time will tell.
Not ripping on SS as he is one of my favorite players and w/ his size is going to make a very good MENTOR for the younger BIG guys

Hopefully AT will give BU someone in the middle who can discourage opposing guards from driving to the basket at will, and, eliminate the need to double team opposing base line players all the time down low...

That would go a long way to helping BU jack up their defensive pressure on opposing teams' jump shooters...

I tend to agree, but SS is experienced and in conference that experience likely will be needed. It has been a very long time since BU had size and depth at the 5, but the depth is not exactly tested.

But JL, and I know this drives many crazy because it often gives us smallish line-ups often plays who is his best 5 at the time he is making decisions. He doesnt always make adjustedments based on what another coach does.

That is why I am convinced that SM will start more often then not. I have said it before and will continue, but SM is who JL sees himself as on this team, he is a leader but also who he trusts with the basketball to make decisions.

Looking at the depth and size of this team and the experience in the back court(where many MVC games are won) the limit to success of this team is virtually unlimited. No longer is it where even if we go with 4 ball handers will we be to small to rebound.

Ok, a disclaimer, this isn't against you houston, You just prompted it, haha.

It cracks me up when people say this. One look at the stat sheet and tell me SM shouldn't start.

Then think about whats being said... Our coach sees himself in a player... Our coach was probably one of the top 5 players to EVER play at BU. If he sees the potential in a current player to be what he was... Then by all means PLAY HIM... LOTS.

Sam was our second best player last year, the best graduated, and people don't want him to start. I don't get it. I honestly wonder if its because SamM doesn't look, we'll say, 'athletic.' SamM is both taller and stronger than EM, makes better decisions with the ball, and is much better offensively. People knock Sam's D - and it was by no means spectacular - but he was guarding the opposing teams 2-guard. Put him back at his natural PG position and he would fair much better on D. I just don't get all the 'Sam's good, but not good enough to start' sentiment on this board, it really makes me wonder...
