The Braves will depart for Rio de Janeiro Thursday and will return home Aug. 17. A day after arriving in Brazil, Bradley will play a warm-up game Aug. 8 (2 p.m. CT) against Fluminese, which currently is tied for fourth among five teams in the Carioca division of Brazil’s regional pro leagues.

After spending four days in Rio de Janeiro, the Braves will head inland to S??o Carlos, a city of approximately 220,000 and 140 miles northwest of S??o Paulo. The COPA EPTV de Basquete tournament is an eight-team event that includes five teams from Brazil’s top professional league, two second-division clubs and the Braves. The tournament will begin with three rounds of pool play and Bradley has been placed in Group 1 with two-time tournament champion Araraquara (2001, 2004), Paulistano and XV de Piracicaba.

Thursday, Aug. 13 6:00 p.m. Lupo/Araraquara (NBB, 8-20, 12th Place)

.........................5:30 p.m. Championship Game (Group 1 1st vs. Group 2 1st)

Bradley is not anticipating any live statistics to be provided online during the tournament, but Bobby Parker, Associate Director of Athletics, is planning to “tweet” updates from the arenas at www.twitter.com/BradleySports if internet access is available. Members of the team also will be blogging from Brazil throughout the trip and their posts will be available at www.BradleyBraves.com .

there may be a change...
a Brazilian site says Bradley's first opponent in the tournament
(the 2nd game played on the tour) is against Bauru, which is a local Sao Paolo team

Bauru is the 6th best team in the TOP level of pro play in Brazil...

That would certainly be a step up and a big test for us after just one game. I like it.

It seems as if the depature to Brazil is kind of late as they won"t arrive until very late tonight and have a game at 2:00 the next day.

they will arrive very late tonight (the 6th of August)...but the first game isn't until August 8, so they'll have a full day to catch up.

the first opponent is actually the lowest rated of all the five opponents, thus our guys will have one of the lesser challenges to start with.

all games are exhibition games for us, but the first one is even an exhibition for the opponent, while the others are actual tourney games.

Here from the Sao Carlos press is the updated schedule for the tournament-
this confirms our first opponent on Wednesday will be Bauru........

BU now plays at 6PM CDT time Wed., Thurs., and Fri., then hopefully in the title game 5:30PM next Saturday.
In the meantime, enjoy the trip and practice your butts off.

By the way, the next opponent on Wednesday, Bauru (GRSA/BAURU SAO PAULO, Brazil-NBB) has not played an actual game since
May 20, and they just underwent a major re-shuffling of players, as they chose not to re-sign several of their players from last
year, and picked up several new players. Even though they are clearly the best team in this tournament,
having come off a fine season where they finished 6th in the Brazilian top professional league (NBB), we may be catching them at
just the right time with several new players who will have to quickly step up and play key parts on their roster.
Bauru has one American player, a guy named Larry Taylor from Missouri Western, but Leandrinho Barbosa who plays in the NBA
and who played for the Brazilian National team that our guys watched in Friday night's tournament in Rio, started with this team.

Here is Bauru's team web site..this is right up to date including the recent addition of four new players
http://www.baurubkt.com.br/baurubasketball/pt/index.php

here are the stats for their final game in May - a 75-74 loss to Pitagoras, their American player, Larry Taylor, had 30 pts, on 11-20 and 4-8 on 3-pointers,
and added 4-4 from the line 3 rebs and 5 assists.

Here is a summer update story...

After an excellent season and earned a sixth place, the team of GRSA / Itabom lost no time
and started the training for the Paulista Championship. Some players such as Larry, and
Alex Fischer took a few weeks of holiday to relax a little and visit the families.

Meanwhile, work continues in court with the players and who were preparing for new hires.

The list maintained for this new season has Larry Taylor, Alex, Fischer, Renato, Everton,
Guilherme and Diego.

The team hired five new players, and Eddy, 21 years, lateral and disclosure of NBB, from the
Saldanha da Gama. Soriano, owner of 20 years the team of Araraquara. Marcelo, 22 years
and pivot 2m15cm, also from the Saldanha. Gaspar, pivot wing of 24 years and 2m02cm of
CETAF staff and new hires to complete the team of GRSA / Itabom will have a pivot abroad,
which is still in the negotiation process.

According Guerrinha, coach of the team, administrative needs, the recovery of the players
who were thinking about a project and the medium to long term, were the main points that
led to such contracts.

"Whenever we have to think about changing the project as a whole, so we of course correction
that is normal in a competitive team, even going well," says Guerrinha about changes in strategies
for the Paulista, the same team having been highlighted in NBB, 2009.

The technician (head coach) is expected to evolve and to continue the great work done by all involved in this first
year of the team, both within, and outside of court.

For fans, Guerrinha leaves a message:
"Keep in prestigious and actively participating, as the sixth team player!"

Tonight is the last night for the team in Rio de Janeiro. Tomorrow they leave Rio and travel to Sao Carlos to begin preparations for the tournament. Their first game is Wednesday night at 6:00 pm CST (8:00 pm in Sao Carlos- see the full schedule in the first post in this thread).

The guys would like to stay in Rio. Andrew Warren, who hasn't blogged before now, said this on his Twitter page-

drewwarren24 - las night in rio!!! headed to Sao Carlos tomorrow I wanna stay in Rio lol u have to visit to understand Why!!!!! LOL!!

It??s very difficult to try to compare a NCAA team like Bradley with brazilian pro basketball team.

What I can say is that Copa EPTV is a preseason tournament in Brazil, used by S??o Paulo State teams to prepare to regional tournament (Campeonato Paulista).

BU is in the toughest group of the tournament. If I had to rank the brazilians team of Copa EPTV it would be something like this:

1. Bauru
2. Paulistano
3. Assis
4. Araraquara
5. S??o Jos?© dos Campos
6. XV de Piracicaba
7. S??o Jos?© do Rio Pardo.

Bauru has the best individual player in this tournament in Larry Taylor. The guy is a stud and he was one of the 3 best individual players from NBB (brazilian championship) last season, IMO. He??s a all around player and a triple double waiting to happen. BTW, he just arrived in Brazil yesterday and should be out of shape/rythim. Bauru also have a great three point shooter in Fischer and a athletic swing man in their new addition Eddy.

Paulistano is a really intriguing team. They struggled last season due big injuries, but now they looked healthy and added important players to their roster.

They represented Brazilian NT in a tournament in Argentina (the main squad didnt travel due the fear of suine flue) and actually beat Australian NT (and lost to Uruguai and Argentina).

Fernando Penna is one of the best brazilians PG, right now (what isnt a great thing, considering our recent lack of good PGs). Ded?© is their scoring machine (young and talented shooter). Betinho is other young and talent prospect. Their frontcourt has two nice players in Bruno Fiorotto and Andr?© Bambu.

I predict they??ll start with Fernando Penna, Edu, Ded?©, Andr?© Bambu and Bruno Fiorotto, using Betinho as a energetic 6th man from the bench.

Araraquara is the weakest team Bradley will face in their group. They weren??t that strong in NBB and lost two important big men (Lucas Tischer and Andr?© Bambu).

It??ll be interesting to see if Arnaldinho will be back after a long period injury. If not, their lone star will be Neto (nice point guard prospect). Julio Toledo is a athletic dunk machine, but he??s not a threat (current brazilian dunk contest champion).

I really think BU has a nice shot to beat Araraquara. Im not sure the first two teams.

Thanks....you have been selected to be our on the spot reporter...pay is negotiable, but the locale is tremendous.

This is awesome news......thanks!

great picture, too

It??s preety obvius that I made a big mistake ranking the teams more based in what I saw last season, than base in the additions/subtractions.

Bauru not only is without their big star, but they look terrible with offseason loses (Ga??cho, Ricardo, M??oz??o, etc).

If they dont make some two or three big additions, they wont compete for playoffs this season.
