Dave Reynolds' Column

tornado

I know Big Mike tacked this link onto the end of the Brazil thread, but there's really a lot more in Dave's column than just the talk about Brazil.
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?p=134060#post134060

Here's the direct link to Dave Reynolds' column about Brazil, Warren's surgery, Egolf's recovery, AD hiring, scheduling progress,
and the plans to tweak the offense and even the defense --

"We like our overall athleticism, team speed and quickness and we’re going to
Brazil to look at different ways to play.
We’ll look at all avenues of playing to our strengths,” he said. “There are some
things we can do defensively to be more disruptive and have our guys really
hone in on this summer. Offensively, we’re looking at different things with our
bigs, our perimeter and our fast break"

Maybe a press??

and this...
"The four incoming freshmen — Jordan Prosser, Dyricus Simms-Edwards, Jake Eastman and Milos Knezevic —
aren’t allowed to make the trip or participate in the pre-trip workouts."

so this should put this issue to rest, as I got a PM from someone who said there was no such prohibition of freshmen going.

The scheduling issues with the Civic Center is VERY disheartening. I know it was a pipe dream and maybe not doable but MY suggestion when it came to CC updates was to add on a seperate wing for hockey. Make it a 5k-6k arena attached that could be utilized for hockey, smaller concerts, extra meeting space, extra exhibit space, etc....all sorts of things that the regular arena is too large for.

Then they could have re-done the arena for basketball only including skyboxes for extra revenue.

Since we are now locked into the recent campus updates SOMETHING has to be done to avoid these sked conflicts...again VERY disheartening.

I agree 100% - Bradley basketball must be their biggest money maker, we draw 10,000!
So why the lousy treatment from the very people who take our tax dollars?

I don't think its "lousy"...could it be better...certainly. Not sure but doesn't hockey draw more overall (since they have many more games). I'd like to see the cost breakdown per game to see which tenant is more profitable per game and overall.

If they have more games their costs are higher? I'm not sure what average Rivermen attendance is, but it seems to have been 1500 or 2000 any time I've been there... Even with the higher ticket prices, seems like it'd be hard to generate more overall profit. They may charge the Rivermen more. Personally, I am and have been fed up with this stuff for a long time. A renovated Civic Center as dogsrus suggested would be great, but who knows when/how that can happen. Eventually a renovation or new construction will be necessary, but I don't think we're there yet.

Didn't our freshmen go to Canada a few years back? Did the rules change?

I thought Warren had his pin removed? Now I read there's another one?

"According to the BU coach, a new pin was inserted into Warren’s foot and a cast will be put in place this week by doctors in the guard’s hometown of Indianapolis. The 6-foot-5 junior will return to BU in two weeks to begin his rehabilitation, but he’ll have to wear the cast for a month."

Great news on Egolf though.

doesn't hockey draw more overall ..

they have 43 home games and sell about 4000 tix per game, but the attendance has been on a big downswing the past few years and has been the subject of some serious concerns.
Add to that, a whole lot of the season ticket seats are empty at home games as many pick and choose which game to attend and are no-shows at others.
In the end they may have about 160,000 total home attendance (just do the math 43 games x 4000 ea)

but each of the past two years, Bradley has equalled or considerably exceeded that!!!
2007-2008 - total home attendance 182,392
2008-2009 - total home attendance 163,981

ps-- finding Rivermen attendance numbers is surprisingly difficult...suggesting they are not very proud of those numbers.
The actual home attendance at the April 15 home PLAYOFF game was only 1512
http://stats.theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1005994

April 17 had 2112, and in the Rivermen's final game (4/27) when they got knocked out they drew 2087.
In fact, I can't find any game in the final couple months of the season that even drew close to 4000.

One message boarder said this...
"Is there an echo in here? That's what I said!!
** Or was that an echo from the building with only 1512 in attendance?"

then the conversation follows suggesting the Rivermen may follow the trend and fold as many other AHL and ECHL teams are doing...
so if the Civic Center was interested in catering at all to it's best customer, and it's best potential long range & future moneymaker...
then they should be kinder to BU basketball.

ps-- I hear Warren did have his pin removed...that is correct.
It sounds as if another piece of hardware may have been inserted according to DR.

This from the PJS article made my morning:

"....the coaches will implement a new playing system differing from the spread motion the team has used the past three seasons."

It's time to stop circling the Braves around the three point line and push the ball inside. We need to play bigger and this may indicate that the coaches think we can:) I hope so.

the rule that has changed is that teams can NO LONGER go on preseason foreign tours while school is in session.
They must be back before classes start. If the freshman have to be enrolled and attending classes full time to be eligible for the foreign tours, then they will not be able to go with the present rules, as they'd have to start classes in the fall to be eligible but the team would have to already be back before then.

and the year we went was 2004-2005, five years ago...and we did go in October which made the freshmen eligible.

ALRIGHT, LETS DO IT:!::biggrin:

Yup. Makes sense now. Thanks!

shortly after Dave Reynolds' story that attributes numerous comments and quotes to head coach Jim Les,
Coach Les posts this note on his twitter site--------

"Don't always believe what you read...
the conversation and the translation to paper
are often surprisingly different!
about 2 hours ago from web "

http://twitter.com/CoachJimLes

hmmm...........now this is interesting...

That was followed by another from Coach Les--

"spread is still part of the package-just 'tweaking'! Outside events not Rivermen impact our sched. the most. Dave is solid-jus clarifying."

That is interesting. Looks like perhaps there's not as much of an offensive or defensive overhaul as we thought (judging by JL's 2nd 'tweet'). My only real gripe with our 'system' was that we didn't play enough big men and completely ignored the post. If we're adding 2 bigs in at the same time and more post play (dare I say 'hi-lo') as the 'wrinkle', then I am fine with that.

Could Coach Les be clarifying the comments in DR's column because of the discussion here?
Is JL essentially posting his response to the BradleyFans thread?

note BU Rick's post & dog's post above...Coach Les' tweet seems to be a direct response to those posts!

BU Rick-

I agree BB:!: Playing 2 big's is not overhauling but improving the system. By doing this you get better % for rebounds/second chances, you guard the lane better, and it will led to more and better selection of shot's from the outside. This should lead to a much higher % on out side shooting. So if this is what JL tweaking is about, I'm happy:biggrin:

I'm sure with WE we'll see more passes into the paint but besides him I do not see much more pure big guy play in the paint. What I do see though is an offense that goes back to the Sweet 16 team where our guys will be slashing a lot more to the basket (every player on this team will be able to drive) and looking to dish or open up the 3 point shooting. This will also put our guys on the line a lot more. Without a true 5 that can play with their back to the rim I do not see much of a change in our offensive philosophy. I do suspect that with our guard oriented team this year we will be pressing a bit more and daring teams to drive on us.

I don't know about now but the Riverman always complained that they didn't have enough weekends where they draw the most. Bradley on the other hand will draw regardless of the day or night.....and get better refs most of the time if they scheduled during the week..
