Calhoun is a good coach but not much of a person as witnessed by his answer to a reporters question, he didn"t have to act in the manner that he did but I believe he felt guilty about how much money he is making compared to what the professors are making at UCONN.

I laughed when he came back with "Not a dime back." LOL!

And then at about the 50 sec mark, he asked the reporter if he's really not that stupid and the reporter replied with "Yea I am." Crikeys - I split my pants laughing so hard!

Then, in giving out advice... he tells him to shut up, and the guy thanks him for being polite and Calhoun says he wasn't polite and told him to shut up again. LOL!

Then about the 1:05 mark, it sounds like someone else in the press room is chiming in to say "give me a break" to the reporter questioning Calhoun or something. LOL!
 
I think Jim Calhoun is a j@ck@ss, but that kid who asked that question was a m-ron. He deserved to be yelled at and deserved to be thrown out of that press conference. That question in that forum was completely inappropriate. At the NCAA Tournament, where the coaches are in a Super Bowl-type atmosphere where they're on the podium for 45 minutes to answer any and all questions would be more appropriate, or in a one-on-one interview, not in a post game presser. The kid was some tree-hugging idealist trying to make some sort of point. He showed zero journalistic integrity. Calhoun's mistake was dignifying the question with a response, because he essentially has helped ths kid make his point. Is this kid going to go and ask Geno Auriemma the same question? He makes just as much as Calhoun does, and doesn't bring in anywhere near the revenue.

FWIW, I have seen Jim Les get quite testy with local reporters in post game pressers, and they were asking questions about the game (which was a win). I can only imagine what he would do if he were asked such a question.

try it again, I just rechecked and it works fine
but I think no matter how stupid the question, the coach should be prepared to give an answer or simply decline to answer.
Calhoun should have never felt obligated to defend what they pay him....wouldn't he be an absolute fool if the school offered to pay him his 1.5 million and he checked with the reporter first then turned it down?
By arguing and screaming and throwing a tantrum, he only makes a fool of himself and then the tape/video can be used for decades against him....remember Lee Elia??

and I have seen dozens of Jim Les interviews and postgame press conferences, and I have never seen anything but polite and civil despite some of the ignorant and insulting things he gets asked.

Yeah, I agree. The journalist was trying to create something out of nothing.
 
I think Calhoun is perfectly justified in his response.

Connecticut was a garbage program on both men's and women's sides of hoops when Calhoun and Geno came to Storrs in the mid-80's. The problem with a question such as that is it shows no regard for the guys body of work or impact on the University's pocketbook.

It's one thing to act like that. But it's something completely different when you can back it up, which Calhoun can.

In the book "Our Game" there is quite a bit about UConn in the early Big East days, struggling to build a competitive program, and the bits about Calhoun and Leitao and how they had to put scraps together in those first days there was some very funny reading.

BradleyBrave is right the kid is a twerp.

I've got to agree with ya southpaw. I actually have NO problem with what Calhoun did. He was ambushed by a punk left wing whacko masquerading as a journalist. This would be comparable to some environmental terrorist, PETA, MoveOn, or NOW nut-case showing up to do nothing more than to try to steal a headline. This loser has already been arrested and escorted out of other press conferences. He had no business being at that Calhoun press conference.

This is truely the nit-pick-n-gotchya era. Filled with bullys and schadenfreudes.

Think of being in a sandbox as a toddler. You're making your roads and driving your little cars around... and a bully comes up and plows over your stuff. So you turn your back, start anew... having fun, making roads, driving cars around... bully plows it over. So finally you get ticked off, punch the bully. Now you are the bad guy. Bully is innocent.
