Indiana player Dumes suspended...

So-players with discipline problems, suspensions, flagrant technicals, ejections, and elbowing multiple opponents is separate games.
Tell me again how Crean's recruits differ from Sampson's?

What the heck do you have against this guy T?

Many coaches would have waited until official BT action. Crean didn't..he did it before. I commend him for that....I didn't say he should be COY.

So he took a day....I'm guessing there are other things on his plate as well.
He took an action...period. It's not that big of deal. Why does coach Les have to be brought into every other coach's situation. It has zero relavance on this one.
Not to mention those behaviors were off court and not on court.

Why wouldn't he practice with the team or go on the trips? He is not going to play at least in the next game. That's the penalty. I doubt missing practices would upset a kid too much.

I actually can't stand Indiana....but I see nothing wrong at all with Crean's actions

Coaches miss things all the time. I've heard many interviews after games with altercations and many times they talk about what the refs said and how they didn't see it and will have to look at the tape.

I don't know if he saw anything or not...I never have a problem with someone taking a day to make a decision. Maybe he wants to talk to the asst. coaches,AD, team captains or just take some time to think about it.
I just don't have a problem with that. We are talking two games right? He did something after the second game and I think that's fine.

There have been kids throw their elbows in a game and get a flagrant foul called on them but not get suspended next game...so that's not unusual in my opinion.
Now for some reason this year it seems like it's totally out of control. I don't know if it's the way teams body up offensive players more or what but I think everyone is noticing it more and I'll think more calls will result because of it.There was one called last night in the Kansas game and at a crucial time too.

I hate to address the last one but I'll give it a try.

In BU's case there was two off court issues with three different players involved that had to do with the law... and one player in two different games where he threw elbows....that in itself is a huge difference IMO.
So you have on court and off court issues...I just don't compare the two.

Besides we know that most national writers don't know all that much in regards to non-BCS schools...so I really don't care that much what they think

As a lot of us thought.....
there is already a rumor that Devan Dumes will be reinstated for the Illinois game this Sunday.
It's only a rumor, but it's being talked about on the premium board as if it is already decided.......
he probably won't start but will play because, as they say, the lust for Indiana, it's fans, and it's new head coach Tom Crean to BEAT Illinois is so strong they'd do practically anything...even bring Kelvin Sampson back if they could!
so in the end, Dumes might get no more than one game, and the league would have given him at least that much, considering they had warned IU of his behavior previously.
This is a miniscule penalty for such repeated, flagrant & aggressive acts, which if they had occurred in a gym class, classroom, apartment, or a hallway at IU, would have resulted in arrest, charges of assault, and expulsion.

They didn't happen in gym class, classroom, apartment,or a hallway...

they were not criminal acts........I'm pretty sure he wasn't arrested.

We are talking events that happened the last two games....hardly repeated, flagrant aggressive acts.......

We will see if he comes back or not after one game.....if he does it's their decision

Dumes does not play in Sunday's game like was rumored and many here thought would play.....according to AP story

"Leading scorer Devan Dumes missed his second straight game since being suspended by coach Tom Crean a week ago for throwing flagrant elbows at Michigan State. Crean has been consulting with athletic director Fred Glass and conference commissioner Jim Delany to determine the length of Dumes??™ punishment. Dumes missed Tuesday??™s game at Minnesota but Crean would not say whether Dumes will play Thursday against Wisconsin'

I would think two games would be sufficient.

There's a reason Dumes didn't play and it wasn't because Tom Crean wanted to hold the kid out...
Crean lobbied hard to try to get the kid cleared...

But Dumes' actions in other games are being reviewed by the Big Ten, because he has shown a pattern of flagrant behavior.
Tom Crean said this..........

"As for Devan's situation, this is still very much a
basketball issue. It is nothing other than that. This is
a multiple-incident type of thing in a couple of
different games. I have been in consultation with the
commissioner (of the Big Ten) and I have been in

consultation certainly with (Indiana) Athletic Director Fred
Glass. ...
Mistakes were made, in the sense of the games, and
it has been a heavy price to pay, no question about
that. We are just trying to take care of our house
the best we can with that."

How can you tell Crean lobbied hard for him to play? I'm not sure two games of behavior is a pattern...

the stuff being discussed on the IU boards hints that apparently they're talking behavior that goes back several games that other coaches have complained of...
at least as far back as 2-3 weeks........

Hearsay on message boards does not mean any of it is true, you said yourself earlier in this thread: "As a lot of us thought.....
there is already a rumor that Devan Dumes will be reinstated for the Illinois game this Sunday.
It's only a rumor, but it's being talked about on the premium board as if it is already decided......."

So you give the coaching staff and administration for handling this situation in the correct way when, given today's athletic climate, most of the top tier programs would not have suspended Dumes for even an entire game... I can't imagine the uproar from if they didn't take appropriate action.

I don't read that any in Crean's own words that says he wants Dumes cleared in the quotes you have T.

The closest one says he's ready for him to come back. I'm guessing any coach would be ready for one of his best players to come back if he's not playing.

Now I'm sure at this point if BT officials cleared Dumes to come back every coach in Crean's shoes would reinstate him as well.

Yup- it's confirmed, Dumes will be back tomorrow...so he ends up with 2 games
suspension, and it really didn't cost IU much since they likely wouldn't have won either game.

Well, you can pretty much say that about all of their games this year.

One other "controversial issue" as well, that Bob Knight will be part of the broadcast team for Thursday night's Indiana/Wisconsin game, the first time Bobbby has been back to Bloomington as an ESPN commentator.

Coach Knight will not be in Bloomington for this game. He we be calling the Duke - St. John's game at the Garden in NYC.
