ISU offered Reese as a 2008 player and when he opted to return to JUCO instead, we targeted and received a verbal from Marquis Gilstrap, his JUCO teammate that his coach said is better than Reese, for 2009.

Jemal Farmer verballed to Arkansas.

Reese could be a stud, but it is always hard to judge the juco kids because of the soft competition they often play,
recall how some people predicted all the ICC players from a couple years ago would have great D-I careers, and in the end none of them did!!

Gilstrap is Iowa State's wild card version of BU's Taylor Brown...a kid nobody really knew much about but is very talented..

Gilstrap has only played two games thus far but has led Gulf Coast in scoring in both games. Gilstrap had 21 in game one (Reese had 14) and 24 in the second (Reese had 22). They won both games including a 90-80 win over the #21 ranked JUCO team. Sounds like Gilstrap is starting out well. He was a wild card stab, but the JUCO coach their said he was going to be a steal for ISU and since Reese is considered a first team AA, I like what Gilstrap has done so far. But the season is long and this is a very small sample.

Now here's a real story........regarding highly rated juco recruit Brad Reese - a junior college All American

The kid had once verballed to Oklahoma State then reneged...

then he accepted an offer from LSU.....

Then he went on an unscheduled, unofficial visit to Oklahoma State last week, and didn't tell the LSU coach what it was all about.
When LSU head coach Trent Johnson found out about it (he must be reading the message boards!)
He YANKED the scholarship offer to Reese...and only 6 days in advance of the signing period!!!....leaving the kid high and dry!!

Good for Johnson, I admire that he's not letting the kid show him up......as this sounds a lot like the kid's only consideration is "me, me, me, me, me"

Now top rated juco player Brad Reese surprises just about everyone and sends a signed Letter of Intent to Pat Knight at Texas Tech, a school that was NOT thought to be in the lead for the kid.
Quite possibly he was looking at the really good chance of immediate playing time at Texas Tech, even though they are expected to be down this year.

Reese is a little bit confused as he has a poor set of handlers. I was told a year ago when ISU was recruiting him that Tech was where he would end up as his handlers have close ties with the Tech staff. Brad will be very effective at Tech, but he had some much better opportunities that he screwed up.

BTW through five games, Gilstrap is averaging 22 points and 9 boards. Sounds like their coach might have known who the better player was.
