OT - Renegade Councilwoman?

Drunk councilwoman confronts BU fraternity with cronies. Renegade city council? Sure seems that way. I was actually on the street that night, about a block away. I can assure you their music was inaudible from half a block away. Thankfully, I left before this crazy lady could make her way down the block. Even more thankful I didn't see those teeth in person...

She then follows up her colossal mistake by attacking BU and their police. I, for one, am thankful for the BU police. They do a great job for their size and are constantly patrolling the area doing their job. She then basically says they are rent-a-cops and they know nothing. Funny because they have jurisdiction off-campus, they can issue city or county citations, and do so often. This lady is digging herself a hole that Rand and the neighborhood won't be able to save her from.

She then defends herself all day, and even gets another front page article to the PJS while BU simply says everyone acted correctly on their part (including the fraternity, I believe).

Someone should tell her, you shouldn't throw stones if you live in a glass house. Especially when you insult the integrity of those who hold the rocks.

My only question is..she obviously trespassed on private property and refused to leave (with 2 others). Then, she was suspected of being intoxicated which was written in the police report. WHY WASN'T SHE BREATHALYZED?????????? WHY WASN'T SHE TICKETED????? I guarantee I would have been, immediately. So were members of our bball team in the past. Seems like more of the same from Peoria, sadly.

T, maybe you can access the public records for this police report..

Glad to hear your side of the story BUBrave28. Looks like another local politician with an aganda and as T stated, we can be certain that the PJS will over report this and run the story into the ground.

Very interesting and entertaining. Don't kow what the real story is, and can't tell from the PJS story since it is basically regurgitating the councilwoman's POV and doesn't try to investigate the story.

Since when does 15 people "talking and laughing" constitute a party? No music, no dancing and no booze means it was not a party it was a gathering. This woman has a few drinks and then decides to have a power trip in front of some important people in the neighboorhood. What does Illinois law allow when it comes to confronting trespassers? They should have taken out the hose out and sprayed her down till she left the steps.

What a j@ck@ss. This woman should have been arrested for criminal trespass. Typical politician - Thinking that the rules don't apply to them. Drunkenness and belligerence is unacceptable...unless you're the one partaking in it, right? I don't know when she's up for re-election, but I sure hope that who's ever running against her brings this up. Methinks this isn't the first time our esteemed councilwoman has thrown back a few and thrown her weight around...

I think there is going to be a lot of "egg on face" if the video evidence supports Sis Nu's story, which I fully believe it will.

If I was Sigma Nu I would send that video to the state's attorney, to the media, and post it on YouTube. Maybe next time our esteemed councilwoman will think twice before getting lit up and trying to bully people around. Of course, she won't be doing any bullying when she doesn't get re-elected. ;)

Why has the PJS referred to the third person in the Van Auken group as "an unidentified man" and "the other man, who she refused to identify"?
Surely someone knows who this man is....weren't the police there asking questions?
Are they trying to protect someone's identity? Why?

BTW-- Andrew Rand's address is listed as 1230 W. Moss.
That is two blocks away, and yet apparently nobody else in between showed up or complained to police. (there is a report someone else called Rand).
1230 W. Moss is on the south side of Moss, and Barker Ave. is in between Moss and Fredonia, so why is a guy from 2 blocks away hiking with Van Auken to Fredonia to lodge the complaints?
Sounds a little fishy, as if an agenda was already drawn up and waiting for a middle of the night confrontation.

From all accounts (except her own of course), it seems that Van Auken got a little tipsy and decided to use her 'beer muscles' to try and bully some college kids and impress her friends. You'll find similar behavior at many bars and watering holes throughout the country. Good to know our fine councilwoman isn't above such neanderthal behavior...

then you and I clearly see it differently...
it appears to me that the PJS is giving strong support to her side of the story, and also giving her a wide open mike to state her case, almost as if they are functioning as her publicist.....
they also seem to have left out key parts of this interesting story...and have not even addressed the questions of...
--who was the other unidentified person?
--what is Rand's part in all this, as he lives two full blocks away, and certainly can't be all that bothered by what's going on over on Fredonia.
he lives along "Mansion Row" on the bluff side of Moss.
--and nothing has been hinted at all of the intense and strong political connection Rand has with the city of Peoria, in that his business is in direct competition with the city's efforts to organize ambulance services through the Fire Dept.
Rand's embroilment in lots of issues with the city, make his "wining and dining" of City Councilwoman Van Auken quite interesting!

if I was wining and dining a Peoria City Councilman or woman, but was in the middle of serious business deals with the city, and negotiations with the city, and disagreements with certain other city officials....then I'd have to think the PJS would really take that story and run with it!!
but oddly, they dance around it and leave it alone altogether.......

Very interesting... gotta love corruption...

There is nothing better then Illinois politics.

The council woman is getting preferencial treatment by the Peoria police, she was asked to leave repeatedly yet refused and does not get ticketed. If she is not on the council she goes to county sits and gets bailed out and has a court date ahead of her. I am pretty sure you can just trespass while intoxicated.

If you live next to a fraterity house, something tells me you might expect some loud noises. College aged students tend to "enjoy" themselves on occasion. To complain would be like complaining that the airplanes by an airport are to loud. You moved there, there are going to be noise situations.

The council woman needs to clearly shut up and stop this continual talking to the media. Yes she is getting her word out on the pages of the PJStar, but she is coming off as holier the now and above any question. Most logical people can see she was in the wrong and her continual running of mouth is not making her look any better.

BU has a respondsiblity in this too but they walk a tight line here. Lets be realistic, many BU students come from well off families and to keep a private University rolling those well off families need to be appeased. BU can not go and arrest, ticket or harrass their own students, but they do need to discuss the issues with the students. But the bottom line is the students are going to enjoy themselves, unless it gets to an absolute beligerant state the school and city should show restraint, quite unlike the good councilwoman has shown.

Got to love "beer muscles" :)

So, normally I'm pretty critical of the Greek System here at BU. I think we need major change and need it quick. I see the negative impact it can have as an RA. However, I am also the president of my fraternity and can understand how positive an influence a Greek organization can have on a college student's life. The negative actions of a BU fraternities AND sororities make it hard for the good actions to shine through. But from every account I have heard, some from very disinterested parties, Matheny handled the situation very responsibly and it wasn't until the councilwoman called in the Peoria Police that there was even talk of wrong doing on the part of Sigma Nu. I think that the fact that this may end of being a positive for the councilwoman is disgusting, and, in comparison if I were even to handle a situation after consuming even a sip of alcohol(which, from what I understand is MUCH less the VanAucken had) in my position as an RA I would be swiftly reprimanded, and find it disheartening that the expectation of a elected official is that much lower....
