Athletics department officials say the change is intended to support and promote sportsmanship in a positive game-day environment. It applies to football and basketball games, as well as all other athletics events.

The new policy comes roughly a year after student David Becker was threatened with ejection from Scott Stadium during a football game for a sign that read "Fire Groh." Becker's homemade sign reflected a view of head football coach Al Groh.

Becker was then informed that the sign violated a policy banning signs that contained derogatory comments or profanity, or impeded another guest's view of the field or cover any stadium signage.

Let's agree not to get into too much depth regarding 1st Amendment analysis, issues, etc.....I think we can all concede that point.

Profanity? Duh.

Derogatory? By whose determination? Not so sure that a simple statement like the one they reference, while technically is "derogatory," should be restricted.

Impede another's view? Kind of weak, but legit, to some degree.

Cover any stadium signage? Don't want to piss off those sponsors!!! This might be the most important reason!!!

I am fine with signs if done in taste, but Outlaw the cell phone wavers. No more cell phones and those who insist on talking on them at a game then seeing themselves on a camera and then thinking it is important to wave.

OUTLAW The CELL PHONE WAVER :)

Agreed! I am glad I am not the only person bothered by these people when I watch a TV game. Why do some people feel the need to spend nearly the entire game doing this?
