Old news visited days ago but still a good read......the one guy has a fairly good perspective about hoops/midwest and the MVC but misses out when he states basically you can't have fun in the midwest.


Theses guys fall in love with good weather and a laid back atmosphere which is allright but OUR fun is IN the actual change of seasons. While not many adore winter I think it makes you appreciate the really good weather even more and allows us to focus on winter sports like MVC/BU basketball.....which is why Sean HArris choose BU over simply better weather.
 
The Big West was the cat's meow in the early 1990's, sending 3 teams to the NCAA Tourney some years. At the time, UNLV was in it's heyday and New Mexico State, and a 3rd team such as Long Beach St could sneak into the tourney.

Once the Tark was gone and UNLV left for the WAC in the mid-90's, the league really tanked.

So it's interesting to read some of the opinion that it could easily be a good program with commitment and effort. I think UCSB is a solid program that has had a couple very good seasons in a row.
 
Maybe Harris wants a better education also???? SB is gorgeous but not known for academics.
 
I have heard that academics was indeed a key reason that Sean and his parents liked Bradley over UCSB. Sean is an outstanding student. In addition, the quality of basketball and the level of support were major factors, too.
UCSB had the weather, the beach, and closer proximity to their home in their favor. But overall, the factors favored Bradley.

One additional thought-- I think the UCSB poster is completely wrong when he said --
"Sounds like his JC coach talked him out of UCSB, or maybe into options. Makes me wonder if the coach did not like Williams for some unknown reason, or was truly looking out for his player's interests in exploring all options. Curious."

CoachCorn never talked Sean into Bradley or out of UCSB. All he did was convince Sean to take one more visit (to Bradley) so he would know he's making the best decision. It was 100% Sean and his family's decision to choose Bradley!
 
I'd think for the same reason the Aztecs of San Diego St are okay. They aren't Native North Americans, or something to that effect... It's probably because the NCAA is far more interested in pleasing the vocal special interest rather than adhering to any sort of principle.
 
Maybe they give kickbacks to the true Gauchos in Argentina so they don't complain about the term, like the Florida State Seminoles do to the Seminole tribe.:D -- just kidding.

You are absolutely correct! It really was just a rhetorical question, and a dig at the NCAA??™s hypocrisy.
 
Just wanted to hop in and mention something: I go to, and love Bradley. But I have spent a lot of time at UCSB. I must say that I am doubtful that this move had anything to do with academics, because to be quite honest UCSB is an OUTSTANDING research university that has the budget to provide far more than BU does. However, the posters are right on the mark about the sports/atmosphere might have a lot to do with the choice. The "IV" they refer to in the thread is the local town that is known for all sorts of entertaining debauchery, it's party atmosphere overshadows a lot of aspects of the SB social life. That being said, SB students are more interested in social functions than sporting events.
I think that all of us Braves fans should be really proud of JL, and company for pulling in this recruit. UCSB may not be a top level school, but do NOT consider this simply a directional school. This school is part of the same system that produces Cal, UCLA, and other fine California Public Schools.

Short Version: I am proud that BU pulled in a recruit over a Big CA Public school.

And this rekindles a question I asked in another thread that nobody addressed. I really don't understand why Pac-10 recruiters and BYU weren't after him (if, in fact, they weren't). Not often you get those numbers, 3 years of eligibility, and a stellar reputation as a hard-nosed basketball player out of juco. Was he under the radar? Did the "bigs" just miss him right under their noses? Seriously, this seems like a too-good-to-be-true recruit.

BTW, I am NOT saying that if big-time programs had offered, he wouldn't have picked BU. I think most sane recruits do. I'm just curious about the interest level.

I think that the 2 year layoff scares a lot of coaches, and I am not going to lie it scares me a bit as well. That would be my only guess besides the coaches/recruiters flat out dropping the ball.

Edit: Although BYU goes through this a lot, so no idea why this would bother them

Yeah, that's the ony reason I can think of too. But if the kid has character, shouldn't be a problem. Seems that's the case . . .

I think the dedication that he shows to his religion (and from reports) to Basketball will make this guy one of the greats at BU.
 
Most of the Pac-10 schools rarely look at juco kids. When they do, it is only the top level juco sophs, and Sean wasn't at that point yet. So I think he did fall "below the radar" of many top schools that would otherwise have recruited him. And I believe the 2-year mission was also part of the reason. Since nothing is binding, some coaches wouldn't bother recruiting the kid at this time.

Sean had a great senior season in high school, but he didn't get much attention from D1 recruiters then. I think he wasn't as physically mature in HS as he is now, and that was a reason the recruiters passed him over.
