Coaching Changes/Alvin Brooks

Tom Crean appears to be hiring Brian Barone as an assistant.
Barone was with Crean at Marquette last year and was at ISU before that.

But here's the big one....
New head coach at Marquette, Buzz Williams, reportedly wants BU assistant Alvin Brooks III as one of his assistants at Marquette.
It is just being discussed on some of the premium boards, but not finalized.

By the way, one more bit of odd news.....Buzz Williams came to Marquette from University of New Orleans, where he was head coach,
Apparently just as soon as he became head coach, he now owes a buyout to UNO, supposedly of $300,000, due to the wording of his prior contract.

WOW....I hope the rumors with AB are false...IMO it would be a shame to lose AB and would hurt recruiting ties that had been built up over the past season and next season to come! I guess the $$$ would be more or even a bump in position but I hope he stays!

hopefully he stays, but it would create that opening for JC to become a coach.

No way JC would take his spot if it came open. If JC wanted to go into coaching right away he would start where Kyle Vogt is.

If AB3 left we would seek out another African American assistant with good recruiting ties.

oh i know. i didn't really mean that seriously. i guess i should have used one of those little smiley face things that i hate. haha.

How do we know he isn't
plus....what about the "context" argument....Brooks is the recruiter who knows Texas, and there is obviously plenty
of connection already between Buzz Williams and Brooks III via Texas.
Williams was at Texas A&M from 2004-2006, and was assistant at several other Texas and Louisiana colleges (so he likely wants a guy who can still recruit Texas thoroughly), so obviously he knows ABIII's dad, and Buzz was one of the recruiters under Billy Gillispie (where ABII worked) who knew the Texas prep scene inside and out, so I suspect he also knew ABIII quite well.

After reading the bios of the 2 new Marquette assistants, I do think it seems unlikely Alvin Brooks would be considered for the 3rd assistant spot.

The 2 new Marquette assistants hired today by new coach Buzz Williams--
David "Aki" Collins-- He is from Fairfield and is very familiar in his career with the New York and east coast recruiting scene--

Tony Benford-- was an assistant at Nebraska, and in his career he has always had connections in the Big 12 , midwest, and southwest regions of the country--

So I would have to think that a 3rd assistant would likely be someone with closer connections in the Milwaukee, Chicago, and upper midwest areas. That is the most fertile recruiting area that Marquette usually gets their players from, and the other 2 guys do not appear to have ever had much of a presence there. I am feeling a little better about keeping ABIII, but I won't be sure until every spot in DI is filled.

I hope coach Brooks stays at BU as I think he is doing a good job and that bigger things are to happen with him out recruiting for Bradley.

I assume ABIII is helping BU but how do we know WHAT his influence has been as far as recruiting? Have any of our recent recruits mentioned him? I realize we have some guys that have come from that region and logically one could infer that he was involved but do we really know for sure?

Again.....I'm sure ABIII is doing well for BU just wondering if we have any evedince just who he has been involved with beyond specualtion.

For instance POB and his Mom were quoted from, what I recall, stating Coach Biancalana was instrumental in his coming to BU.

I think Eddren McCain and Chris Roberts both mentioned Alvin Brooks III in the recruiting process. McCain is orginally from Houston and Roberts is from Ft Worth. I don't think BU's other assistants have Texas' backgrounds.

It is hard for the fans to see what effects the assistants have, because most of their work is behind closed doors and on the road.

But I have heard from a number of sources that AB is a tireless worker and that he is forging a lot of valuable contacts with his recruiting. We will see much more of the fruits of his efforts in the next few years.

Since we are signing players from Texas and Nevada I would have to think that he is the main reason why we were able to get these players to come to Bradley as he is our main recruiter, I know coach Les recruits , but coach Brooks does it as his number 1 priority so I believe he is doing a great job.

After reading the bios of the 2 new Marquette assistants, I do think it seems unlikely Alvin Brooks would be considered for the 3rd assistant spot.

Buzz Williams filled out his coaching staff yesterday. He hired Dale Layer as his 3rd assistant. Layer's most recent job was as an assistant under Ritchie McKay at Liberty University. Ironically, Buzz Williams's first coaching job in Division I was as an assistant under Dale Layer at Colorado State.

So it looks like Alvin Brooks will be staying at Bradley!
