Billy Packer

Again, as usual, the only thing that spoiled my watching the NCAA championship game last night was having to listen to Billy Packer.
He was his usual annoying self trying to talk over Jim Nance too often, and feeling the need to comment endlessly about everything, and repeating himself numerous times when he thought he was right about something.

At one time late in the game, he chided one of the players for "not knowing the rules". But then a short time later, when Memphis inbounded a ball late in overtime by rolling it slowly upcourt so the clock wouldn't start and they could set up their offense before it was picked up, he screamed "pick it up!" and then exclaimed that "Memphis almost got called for a 5-second violation!".

Well, maybe Billy Packer should know the rules. The 5 second rule states--
A five-second throw-in violation occurs if, during a throw-in, the thrower does not release the ball before five seconds have elapsed
It doesn't matter how long it takes before the next player picks it up, Billy.

That was just one of many mistakes he made during the game. I wish I had jotted more of them down, because now I don't remember all the others. Maybe other posters can list some of the Billy Packerisms they recall from last night.

Let's not forget him screaming during the first half that Memphis needed to set ball screens for Rose.....then in the second half when Rose showed brief flashes of his potential, then Packer says the reason he's finally getting his points is because they're not setting screens for him!!!!

I've got an even better one written down at home....will post it verbatim later.

My favorite was during the overtime...he said Kansas knows what an OT game in the championship game feels like, because they played in a triple OT game in the 50's!!

He also loves to reference things and players from teh 40's- liek anyone watching last night remembers the 40's!

I hardly can remember my 40's!

He is a clown and Nantz isn't much better- and why do the tv announcers do the intros? Crazy

On page BR 136 Rule 7 Section 6 Throw-in

Art. 1. The throw-in shall start and the throw-in team shall have team control when the ball is displaced at the disposal of a player entitled to the throw-in.

Art. 2. The throw-in count shall end when the ball is released by the thrower-in so that the ball goes directly onto the playing court.

Art. 3. The thrower-in shall release the ball within five seconds so that the pass goes directly into the playing court, except as provided by Rule 7-5.6.

You make the call.....here is a tough one.....

..clock is running and a team inbounds the ball by simply rolling it slowly onto the court.
However, neither team wants to hurry up, and actually both teams decide they really would like to see the clock run, so the ball slowly rolls to a dead stop and sits in the backcourt and all ten players just stand and watch.

The clock is running, and the referee can't start the back-court ten second count, since nobody has yet established possession...so the clock continues to run......

What is the call?? Does the ref blow the play dead since there is no movement, kinda like the ball stuck in the crotch of the rim?
Or do the refs let the clock tick away until it reached zero if nobody picks it up?

I was actually confused by that play where Rose dribbled a couple times, picked it up, dropped it, then picked it back up before passing it to a teammate. Isn't that the same as passing it to yourself, which is considered travelling? I'm guessing I'm wrong, since the ref was standing right next to Rose when he did it. It seemed like Rose himself didn't want to pick it up for fear of a violation, but nothing was called.

According to the rules if he did stop his dribble and then drop it then he cannot pick it up. Now how did he drop it I guess is the question. Did he touch the ball with both hands or not? If he did, it should be a violation.

Amen. What irritates me is his incessant critique and dissection of every free throw. (e.g., "nice rotation on the ball; he stepped into the shot/he stepped back from the shot," etc., etc., ad nauseum.) He even had some inane comment about the opening tip which I can't recall. Where have you gone, Al Maguire?

This was the one I was talking about!!! I actually rewound the DVR and wrote down his exact quote. I'll post it when I get home.

McGuire has gone on to the big basketball court in the sky having died of leukemia on January 26, 2001 in Milwaukee at age 72.

And, yeah, when will the networks realize we watch in spite of Packer not because of him?

This morning, the Ticket (sport talk radio in Dallas) was mentioning how many calls they have received from their listeners who think Packer is over the hill. So while many of us dislike Billy for his being a BCS shill, many other dislike him because he is a poor game announcer.

Billy Packer is one of those guys who should have retired a few years ago. He had some good comments last night and he had an equal amount of dumb comments as well. The Kansas OT comment was just plain stupid. But Jay Bilas simply annoys the h*** out of me. Bilas is nothing but a big windbag of hot air.....

Al Mcguire was simply the best.

--and even though I dont like him as a coach, the tv execs at cbs need to find a way to get Bobby Knight in their rotation as a color commentator. Knight as a commentator would also be job security for the guy in charge of the 5 second delay switch!:)

This was the play that I was trying to remember when Billy Packer screamed that the players don't know the rule. Packer claimed that if the dribbler lost possession, he is still allowed to pick up the ball again, but that he cannot advance the ball.
