  • BU recruit- class of 2008- Chris Babb

Chris Babb is a 6'4", 205 pound shooting guard from The Oakridge School, in Arlington, Texas. He originally committed to New Mexico last summer after attending Steve Alford's Elite Camp. But he decommtted from New Mexico about a week later, and is now considering Bradley among other offers he has.

Scout.com has a new premium article on Chris Babb--

In the article, Dave Telep, who is Scout's National Recruiting Director, quote's Chris Babb's father as saying Chris is having a great senior season, and averaging over 30 points a game. Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M are looking at him.
North Texas has offered, and Iowa State and Bradley, according to dad, will each receive one of his four remaining official visits.
Oral Roberts, a school Babb is no longer considering, received the other official visit.

Scout rates him 3-stars, and a number of other articles I found on him refer to him as a great shooter with a lot of range. He has a strongly built body, and is very athletic.

Here is Chris Babb's Scout profile-

Maybe he will feel at home on the Hilltop with other Texans Chris Roberts and Eddrin McCain!along with red/shirt freshman Anthony Thompson! Bring Babbs home Alvin Brooks!

I can't get onto that scouts site, but I was wondering what made him back out of New Mexico and why he was able to fly under the radar for so long? I like what I have read so far but I just feel that there has to be a reason why we hadn't heard about him until now. Maybe this was all in the article but I was just curious.

No reason was ever given, other than he wanted to give more time to explore his options. In the mean time, New Mexico got a committment from another shooting guard.

The article says his team's season ends this weekend with the state tournament. I am not sure what organization his school belongs to, since I do not think the state's public schools end their season this early.--

A new article on Rivals.com reports that now that his season is over, Chris Babb has gotten a few new offers, including one from Illinois State to go with the ones he had from Bradley, North Texas, and TCU.

          Premium article--

I've gotten four new offers this week from Illinois State, South Alabama, Penn State, and Iowa," Babb said. "I'm still talking to Baylor and Vanderbilt and they're going to come and watch me workout. They've all told me that they like my shooting and my size as a big guard."

The four new offers for Babb add on to the previous ones he had from North Texas, Bradley, and TCU. With the season over and the focus now on his recruitment, Babb has gone ahead and scheduled two visits - Penn State (Mar. 1) and Iowa State (Mar. 8 ) - and is hoping to set one up soon with Iowa.

Yeah...this is a guy that I really want BU to have a shot with. But it is not a great sign that there is no longer a mention of an official visit to BU in his plans.
The previous article on Chris mentioned that he had two official visits set up...one to Iowa State and one to BU. Now, a couple weeks later, the article indicates that he has a visit set up with Iowa State and one with Penn State...nothing on BU...
Maybe it was just an oversight in the article and a BU visit is still in his plans...but it sounds like he bumped the BU visit once he got interest from Penn State, as I read it.
Hopefully this isn't the case...because Chris sounds like a perfect, perfect fit for this team. A 6'5" guy that shoots threes very well and is a little limited athletically...hmmm, we've got a senior that fits that description...it sure would be nice to find a guy that could replace him for the next 4 years....

                Here are my concerns....

-he is a senior, Class of 2008
-he is completely done with his final high schools season
-he still has not made a commitment to a D-I, four year school
-he is reportedly good enough that pretty big names like New Mexico, Iowa State, Vandy, Texas Tech, and Baylor have shown interest, and at least EIGHT of these big-name schools have "offered" (although we don't know if the offers are contingent upon qualifying, but, of course, most ARE!!)

The obvious conclusion therefore, is that this kid has some academic issues and is probably going juco, otherwise, if he was a qualifier, he'd have gotten slam-dunk offers, and he'd have sealed it up before this late date.

Not schocking news but Babb has taken iowa st and Bradley off his high interest list and put iowa and penn st on it.....BU no show med interest!

I could be wrong, but I don't think the kids directly have anything to do with these high-med-low interest lists that show up out on Scout and Rivals. I think that Rivals and Scout establish these levels of interest based on inferences they make from the articles/interviews that each kid gives throughout the year.
Chris Babb in one article said he was going to give Iowa State and BU two of his official visits...after that article was published, BU and Iowa State were noted with "high" interest from him. Then later, he said in an interview that he had scheduled visits to Iowa and Penn State...as a result, Iowa and Penn State are now listed as his "high interest" schools.

don't you think it's safe to infer that he holds iowa and penn st. higher on his list than bradley and iowa st. if he chose to visit those two schools instead? i do.

I guess you can label me old school.....but I only want kids that want to play for BU...period! A lot of these kids go to the big schools only to ride the pine and get recruited over with better talent coming in every year.....come to BU to play and make a name for yourself getting a quality education and star treatment from the 10,000 strong BU fans!

Chris Babb is visiting Penn State this weekend. He saw a good game as Penn State beat Indiana.
It is being reported that he will make a decision as soon as he returns home from his visit this weekend.
I would think Penn State might have a slight advantage. They seem to need a shooting guard more than Iowa.

I still wonder if he is quick enough to play at the Big Ten level. Here is a brief scouting video of Babb. He is #24, and appears to be a little slow, not much of a jumper, and more of a spotup shooter.

Chris Babb spoke with the Penn State Rivals site after his visit there this past weekend.

                            Premium article--

Here is a clip from the premium article--
Back in Arlington now, Babb said it's decision time between his final two schools, Penn State and Iowa.

"I'm going to sit down with my family, think about it and talk about it and make the pros and cons list of each school," he said. "I'll probably have a decision within the next couple of days.

From some of what he says in this article, he sounds like he was not real thrilled about the lack of things to do in Happy Valley, Pennsylvania. Maybe that means he is leaning toward Iowa, but he says he will announce soon between these 2 schools.

Penn State lost a close one to Illinois, but they did get a little good news. Chris Babb, a 6'5" shooting guard who Bradley had recruited, called the coaches shortly after the loss to Illinois and gave a verbal commitment to the Nittany Lions.
