Marvell Waithe has narrowed his decision to four schools.
They are, in no particular order, Cincinnati, Duquesne, Loyola-Chicago, and Rutgers.
A press conference has been set for 1PM next Tuesday at his high school to announce his collegiate choice.
My guess -- Duquesne. They are a latecomer to the Marvell Waithe sweepstakes.
There must be a reason that all the original schools that were interested in him are now out of consideration (Georgia, Bradley, Iowa, Tulsa, Wake Forest, Seton Hall ). And I just don't think he is Big East material.
Rivals also lists four final choices for Waithe, but differ slightly.
They say....Cincinnati, Duquesne, Rutgers, and Illinois-Chicago as Waithe's final four choices, from which he will choose within the next week.
Waithe has "set a press conference" for 3PM next Tuesday, at Toronto Sir Wilfrid Lauier Collegiate School to let us all know if he's going to play at Illinois-Chicago. Is this kid for real??
Despite coachng changes and player defections, it seems Waithe may be going to choose Rutgers.
"The Toronto Sun reports in Saturday's edition that 6-foot-7, 190 pound forward Marvell Waithe from Sir Walter Laurier Collegiate School in Scarborough, Ontario, appears to be headed to Rutgers.
Waithe, whose final four schools are Cincinnati, Duquesne and Loyola (Chicago) and the Scarlet Knights, had visited the Dukes last week. Shortly thereafter, he headed to New Jersey.
Bradley, Georgia, Michigan State and Iowa have also checked out the only Canadian in the Nike Hoops Summit in Memphis, Tenn., last month. He also played in the all-Canadian all-star game.
Waithe, who averaged 35 points and 12 rebounds this past season, is expected to decide before Wednesday, May 17, 2006, the final day of the spring National Letter of Intent period. "
This article says-"Rutgers has made Waithe a verbal offer as has Loyola of Chicago, a program that dearly covets Waithe and has already sent the Grade 12 Laurier student a letter of intent."
I thought he might have had several offers, but this suggests that his offers might be just Loyola and Rutgers.

Now he will have the chance to play against Horizon powerhouses such as Wright State, Youngstown State, UW-Green Bay, and UIC in a conference that seems to rarely ever place more than one team in the NCAA.
Nope, not going to Rutgers.
Reportedly he was leaning toward Rutgers, but had a last minute change of mind.

There is some talk over on the Rutgers board that Marvell Waithe is a good student and gets good grades, but that his curriculum is inadequate and his transcript would not fly in most of the major conferences, which is why he ended up at Loyola and not Cincy, Georgia, Rutgers, or the MVC.
Rumor is that within the next few days it will be announced that Valparaiso will be leaving the Mid-Con and join the Horizon League.
This is going to get the Mid-Con crumbling. The Mid-Con already has several 300+ RPI schools and is looking to add three more such schools in South Dakota State, North Dakota State, and Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne.
There is definitely something "funny" about this Marvell Waithe saga. Every major college that recruited him, and there were about a dozen mentioned over the past month, backed off.
The one he signs with is one of the couple that got interested just in the past few days.
Even his scheduled press conference Tuesday to announce for Rutgers was postponed and switched to Wednesday and his choice changed that quickly, too, to Loyola.
I wish the kid good luck. But his goal was to sign with a top major program where he could play and make an impact immediately. Loyola is not a top major, and we'll see next season how ready he is to play. If he's eligible.
I somehow get a feeling that we'll be just as glad his choice wasn't Bradley.
Don't know what to make of those comments on the Rutgers board about transcript concerns, but this scenario suggests where there's smoke, there's fire, so I think his academics are an issue.
On the other hand, Loyola was rated pretty high in RPI early on last season, and ended with a non-conference RPI of 73, but they did bad in their conference. The Horizon League was only the 15th rated conference, and yet only two teams finished with a worse conference record than Loyola (Cleveland St., Youngstown St.)
My guess, if Waithe really meant what he said about trying to find a top program to play at is that he was left with only ONE option after the other programs all pulled out (and it appears that even Rutgers must have pulled out at the last minute and caused his late change), and that option was Loyola.
Hey, Rutgers really, really needs help as they just changed coaches and announced yesterday that three more players are leaving.
If this kid didn't have some severe issues, then I have to believe Rutgers would have killed to get him and he would NOT have fell to Loyola.
A new article by Dave Telep, but you have to take the word of the kid's own AAU coach with a bit of skepticism,
"GC Ballers head coach Jeff Bishop stated that he thought Marvell Waithe reminds him of the NBA's Tayshaun Prince.
Waithe, who reportedly committed to Loyola of Chicago, is about 6-foot-7 and 190 pounds. "He has long arms and is lean," Bishop said. "He is also athletic and can block shots.
Waithe, from Sir Walter Laurier Collegiate School in Scarborough, Ontario, had also considered Rutgers, Bradley, Cincinnati, Georgia and Iowa."
There must have been some truth to the opinions above. A report I have heard here in Chicago
is that Marvell Waithe still has not qualified to be eligible at Loyola.
My guess is that he will likely go the prep school route.
