I also have heard from a friend that Waithe does not
have the academics to play at Loyola.
This guy's recruitment was a veritable circus with him
changing his mind publicly then going with Loyola
who hadn't even been in the mix.
I think he is a Ben Coupet.

Marvel Waithe is not listed on the roster of Loyola University.

Does anyone know where he ended up?

Yeah be careful what you wish for.....

It DOES show another plus of JL and staff though...while XC will not be available this year at least they have helped send him somewhere where he can "fatten up"...increase his skill level and likley return to BU in a couple years.

IOW BU will get some return on their "investment".

Somehow I suspect that if Waite had gone to DePaul or Illinois, he would have found a way to get cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

After more than 2 years absence, the name of former BU recruit Marvell Waite resurfaces. He never did enroll at Rutgers or Loyola, never passed the NCAA clearinghouse, and he returned to Canada. I do not know what he has been doing the last 2+ years, but now he has enrolled at Talahassee Community College, and will be a juco recruit in the class of 2010.
Here is a long thread we had about him more than 2 years ago.--

He is now listed as Marvel Waithe (now only 1 L in his first name)

Marvel Waithe is actually among the nation's leaders in junior college stats....!!
after 9 games, Marvel is averaging 23 ppg (11th in nation), 57.4% FG shooting, 49% 3-pt shooting pct., 11.4 rpg (15th nationally).

Ex-Simeon teammate of Derrick Rose, Tim Flowers is 13th in rebounds with 11.6 rpg., and ex-Marquette Eagle Trevor Mbakwe is 3rd at 14.1 rpg.
Darius Johnson-Odom is averaging 21 ppg/5.2 apg at Hutchinson CC.

                    One other interesting fact.........
the top two scorers in all of DII Junior college (NJCAA DII) are BOTH on the same team!

Ricardo Laing is averaging 38.7 ppg, and Anthony Baglin 30.7 ppg. - both play at a branch of Baltimore County CC

Former BU Canadian recruit Marvell Waithe is mentioned in this article. He will be a sophomore at Tallahassee Community College this season, and will visit Arkansas the weekend of October 9-11. He is described here as a 6'9" big man-

When Bradley was recruiting him he was listed as 6'7", 190 pounds.

He does appear to have put some weight on-

This premium article from The Arkansas Scout has more information. http://arkansas.scout.com/2/904134.html

Here are some short clips from the article-
Marvell Waithe, a 6-9, 215-pound versatile combo forward from Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College who was Mr. Basketball in Canada back in 2006, will take an official visit to the University of Arkansas on Oct. 9-11.

It comes after a sterling high school career where he averaged 35 points per game, two years of playing at prep schools while working to get clearance from the NCAA Clearing House and eventually just taking the junior college route.

Waithe, who has drawn comparisons to NBA players
Tayshaun Prince and Corey Brewer, will visit Arkansas Oct. 9-11, has a visit scheduled to Rutgers for the following week and could possibly also visit Alabama.

Waithe, who averaged 18.9 points and 8.6 rebounds for TCC last season as a freshman, has developed a nice bond with Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey and assistant Tom Ostrom.

Tallahassee CC head coach Eddie Barnes is impressed with how his player has handle recruiting and how the Arkansas staff has pursued him.

???I think they are doing a great job recruiting Marvell and that is evident by how he is taking a visit there first and how he has got it down to just the three schools ??“ Arkansas, Rutgers and Alabama ??“ even though he has a lot of schools wanting him,??? Barnes said.
Barnes believes Waithe, who shot 39 percent (45 of 115) from 3-point range, 53.4 percent overall from the field and 76.3 percent from the line while getting there 139 times, has the ability to be one of the best.

???In all honesty, when he first got here, Marvell had never met a shot he didn??™t like,??? Barnes said. ???He thought his time to shoot was as soon as he turned. But that is what they needed and wanted him to do. Since he has gotten here, we have worked with really hard on his basketball IQ and he has really come around.

Waithe also made 49% of his shots and 40% of his 3-pt attempts (48-121)
I think he's going to be a very good player...

seriously doubt it....he will go to a high-major--...but a little known fact...back when he was still a relatively unknown
Canadian just beginning the recruiting process, Bradley might have actually been in the lead, and Waithe
actually visited Bradley (4/19/06)...but shortly thereafter found he didn't have the courses and academics
and was likely headed to juco....so BU dropped off........
*** note, in 2005-06 the NCAA revised the academic requirements & Core curriculum for eligibility, and all American high
schools knew about it, but unfortunately the Canadian high schools for the most part never knew and Marvell's
academic counsellors up in Canada simply dropped the ball and were clueless about his needs...this ended up hurting
Marvell big time, as he really is a fine student...

Here is a quote from the Toronto Sun:
"Waithe thought he had the necessary core courses to play NCAA basketball.
Guidance counsellors assured him, authorities at Loyola gave their blessings and
Waithe himself figured every detail was finalized. He enrolled in summer school,
only to find out the NCAA's clearing house would not give its approval."

He and his counselors followed the NCAA rules, but not the current standards
which went into effect this past school year. The NCAA has told us that they
do notify American schools when significant changes occur. (but not Canadain schools)
Have to check on their outreach to international schools and/or educational organizations.

The most recent change affected the definition of acceptable computer science courses.
Only courses that require programming in connection with math or science criteria
are countable. This was first effective August 1, 2005.

The are two places on the NCAA's website where this change is explain. One document
that explains initial eligibility changes. And it's present in the 2006 by-laws: it's a footnote
on page 180, the chart at the end of the Initial Eligibility chapter.
With the NCAA's final answer (No), Loyola seems out of the picture for this season."

Waithe has been taking visits to Big 12, Big East, & SEC schools...
He appears to have three favorites, Arkansas, Rutgers, Alabama...but the first story linked below says Alabama has been eliminated.
The second story from Oct. 13 says right now he appears to be leaning to Rutgers and will visit them again this weekend.

Here's a funny comment from Waithe after his visit to Arkansas...
"Arkansas, where he visited last weekend....was great. I loved it.
The atmosphere was great, the city not that good..."

uh oh....this means they must have allowed him to take off his blindfold when he was in Fayetteville, AR!!
