But the one US player that looked like he didn't belong was Jon Scheyer. He had a horrible game. He looked much slower than everyone else, was shooting airballs, making turnovers, and unable to defend. He does not appear to be in the same class as the other US players. I wonder if he might redshirt next year at Duke?
that is really funny. obviously you have not seen scheyer play very much. when i read the post above i couldn't help laughing out loud and couldn't stop for a long time. hope your not scouting or recruiting for bu
You obviously didn't watch him play. I watched the game. Scheyer was easily the worst player on the floor. Things don't get any easier in the ACC. He is skinny and seemed intimidated by playing against kids as big or bigger than him.
People have compared Scheyer to JJ Redick, but Redick dominated in these postseason all star games when he came out of HS. Scheyer hasn't looked very good. He did not have a great game at the McD's AA game, either. Even the Duke fans on their BB's are wondering if he is a bit overrated.
I'm not the only one who thinks there is a possibility that Jon Scheyer might be overrated by some. And I have seen him play quite a bit, and have been impressed with his skills.
Rivals lists Jon Scheyer quite far down their list at #70 in the class of 2006. Well below any of the other players on the USA team at the Hoops Summit, or on the McDonalds AA team.
Here is an article that suggests that there were a number of better and higher rated players who were not invited to play for the US team including a couple local stars from Memphis, while Scheyer was included.
See the section labeled "Happy just to be here" about halfway down the article-
I think I made my opinions of him clear. Yes, he would be a star at Bradley and in the MVC.
Let me ask-- Do you think he is in the same class as Tywon Lawson, Gerald Henderson, Wayne Ellington, Paul Harris, or any of the other players on the USA team that played today, or at the McD's All American game?
Is it possible that he may not be good enough to play at the level of Duke and the ACC? I would not have believed so a few weeks ago, but after watching him in these last couple weeks of All Star games, I now have some doubts.
At one time Scheyer was a Top 10 national recruit. Now he is #70. Here is Rivals list of top shooting guards. JS is not even in the top 10 at his position (he is the #12 shooting guard in the class of 2006)-
Right now I'd rather have Waithe! Do the Braves really have a shot at him? Would they rather have Moses? I think up to this point that Moses has played against tougher players on a daily basis which may not mean anything down the road!
From what I saw of Waithe, he reminded me of Shaun Livingston (please don't tell me I am putting too much pressure on him, I am not saying he is as good as Shaun!).
But he is tall (and skinny) for a point guard (6'8") and handles the ball extremely well, and passes like Shaun. Even though he didn't play much, and he only had 2 days to practice with his team (he was the only Canadian on the team, so he had never met any of the other players before) he made some impressive moves and passes. Plus he is a great scorer, over 30 points a game in high school.
The earlier article said he plans to play in a number of these types of All Star games and did not plan to commit until late in the spring.
Good question. Moses has played against a lot tougher competetion and may be more ready for Div I. Waithe might have similar skills and maybe even higher upside, as Moses has never been a scorer like Waithe is. Both are from Canada, though Moses is originally from Sudan. Moses played guard when he was in high school in Canada, but has been a forward since coming to Chicago.
Im going to take Coach K's opinion here, and say that Scheyer will do just fine at the next level....remember, this are all-americans, and someone has to worst, even if everyone plays great.....
..i would be ecstatic if someone called me the worst player on a team consisting of the top 12 players in the country.
and i would take scheyer over jeremy crouch tomorrow.

"I'm going to spend my time, like its going out of style."
Yesterday on FoxSports Midwest the US vs. World Junior National teams played at the Nike Hoops Summit in Memphis.
Marvell Waithe was a late addition to the international team, and only played 8 minutes.
But he was clearly one of the most talented players they had, and would likely have played more had he been with them and been able to practice more with the team.
He only played 8 minutes, scored 5 points, and had 2 rebounds.
The international star who impressed the most was Senegal's Mouhamed Saer Sene. Not sure if he has college eligibility, but the 7-footer could probably jump to the NBA soon. (nbadraft.net has him listed on their 2007 mock draft at #19, but look for him to move up soon.) He had 15 pts, 9 blocks in 27 minutes. Wayne Ellington had 31, Kevin Dyrant 20 for the USA. John Scheyer clearly needs a couple years of college, as he was a full step slow compared to most of these guys.
He only played 12 minutes and had one pt.
The game was actually pretty close when both teams had their starters in.
After one (10 minute) quarter, the USA trailed 26-25.
The World Select team also won the 3rd quarter 25-22.
The 2nd and the 4th quarters were won convincingly by the USA, 33-18 and 29-22, as the only real difference was that the USA team was way deeper. Whenever the World starters sat down, the USA went on a run.
Maybe with a couple of down all-stars games from Waithe it could help the Braves to land him? I do not think he needs any more press than he has received already!
PS...........the best selling point at Bradley.........Coach CB can get you to the NBA*......
Greg Oden was conspicuously absent from the Nike Hoops Summitt, and apparently here is the reason.
Reebok got to him first.
Even though he is still in high school, Oden has apparently agreed to sign a huge contract from Reebok to be one of their spokespeople. Surely he will have his own Air-Oden line of shoes soon, but cannot be paid yet as he is still competing in some amateur and AAU stuff and is planning to go to Ohio State this fall to play college ball.
But that doesn't stop him from choosing to align himself with Reebok, as he has already done for a few months.
Reebok "would not allow him" to play in the Nike sponsored Hoops Summit!!
But he will be in the Roundball Classic today (sponsored by Reebok).
The international star who impressed the most was Senegal's Mouhamed Saer Sene. Not sure if he has college eligibility, but the 7-footer could probably jump to the NBA soon.
Sene was a man among boys for the World team. He is just 18 years old and has an awesome body and athletic ability. He apparently has been contacted by some US college coaches, but has indicated that he is not interested in coming to the US to go to college. He believes he can spend another year playing junior club ball in Europe and the go into the NBA draft.
Look for him to be another high pick in the 2007 draft.
