  • BU recruit- class of 2008- Ryne Smith

Here is another name that has surfaced that Bradley has offered a scholarship to. Ryne Smith is a 6'3" 170 pound shooting guard from Toledo Whitmer High School. He sounds like another sharpshooting guard in the same mold as Matt Roth.
Bradley's offer may have come in the past 10 days, since a Scout.com article from July 7, listed his offers and did not include Bradley.

    Here are a couple clips--
Talk about it in Basketball Recruiting Board
A handful of mid-major schools were recruiting 2008 prospect Ryne Smith before the July recruiting period. But after a major scoring outburst at the adidas It Takes 5IVE Classic, practically every mid-major around the Midwest has offered the 6-foot-3, 170-pound shooting guard from Toledo (Ohio) Whitmer High School, and a handful of high majors are now tracking him.
Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan and Notre Dame are the high majors tracking Smith, while he is also considering offers from Akron, Bradley, UMass, Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan.
Faced with a potential decision between being a role player in the Big Ten or a star at the mid-major level, Smith said stability in the program is of the utmost importance.
"I'm looking for the best situation," he said. "My sister plays at Indiana and she has had three different coaches in the three years she has played there. I'm looking for stability in the program I'm going to play for. If the situation is right, and I'm a role player in the Big Ten then that is good enough for me."
A prospect who could certainly raise his stock by forgoing the early signing period and playing the season as an unsigned senior, Smith isn't interested in taking this route.
"No, I definitely want to get this over before my senior season," smith said.

Ryne Smith, a 6-3 shooting guard from Whitmer High School in Toledo, OH, told Scout.com's Evan Daniels at the adidas Take 5ive Classic that he has scholarship offers from Eastern Michigan and Fairfield and interest from Akron, Bowling Green, and Dayton. Smith, a member of the Class of 2008, won't have just two offers for long after the show he put on at the Take 5ive, though.

    clips--
Toledo Whitmer's Ryne Smith is turning into one of the top shooters in the state with his stellar play for the Ohio Gators this summer. He's starting to get some high-majors following his play, and Dayton seems to be one of those that has made their presence known in this recruiting battle. "I'm very impressed with the coaching staff and their professionalism," Ryne's father and Toledo Whitmer head coach Bruce Smith said. "They've done a very nice job, they're very kind and informative."
The two of them visited Dayton's campus during the month of June, but the Flyers haven't offered as of yet.

Another update on Ryne Smith- he is playing in Las Vegas this week with his AAU team The Ohio Gators

Ryne Smith ???‚¬??? Ohio Gators ???‚¬??? Same story for Smith, filling it up from deep and showing a little more of his game than he did when we caught him in Cincinnati a few weeks ago. Has showed the ability to put the ball on the floor when the defense plays him as a guy who can only shoot the ball and he is doing it more consistently than we have seen before. Definitely more impressive than our first glance and this guy is someone we would have checked back in on if his team had not bowed out of the tournament yesterday with a loss to DC Assault.

A new article about BU recruit Ryne Smith--

It may be a premium article, but here are a few points--
The article suggests that 6'3" Toledo shooting guard Ryne Smith has gone from midmajor recruit to a major recruit with his good play over the summer. Now he plans to visit two Big Ten schools in the coming weeks. He plans to visit Purdue this Thursday, and Penn State on August 13th. He also reiterated that he plans to make his decision before his senior season. Minnesota has also contacted him.
He says he has the following offers--
"Fairfield, Eastern Michigan, Akron, Bowling Green, Utah, Bradley, UMASS, Oakland, Florida Atlantic, George Mason, Youngstown State, William & Mary and Ole Miss have offered me," said Smith.

Here is a Peoria connection with Ryne Smith-
The article says Ryne was named after former Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg!

According to his bio below, Ryne Sandberg was named after another older major leaguer Ryne Duren!

Ryne Smith verbally committed to Purdue while visiting there Thursday.

Since Purdue had also become interested in Matt Roth and offered a scholarship, this means they are now no longer in the Matt Roth sweepstakes. But it does suggest that players like Smith and Roth are coveted by these high-majors.

Ryne Smith is a lights out-type shooter, like Matt Roth.
Smith was one of Coach Les' recruiting targets and I sure would have loved to have seen him here.

But he chose to go to Purdue, and Purdue is so loaded that coach Matt Painter is likely going to redshirt the kid.
Too bad, Ryne, you could have been a key player if you had come to BU and probably played a bunch right away!!

In the one exhibition game he did play (incoming freshmen ARE allowed to play in exhibitions and not ruin their chances of redshirting
but transfers and jucos are not), Ryne Smith absolutely burned the nets and scored 13 points in just 20 minutes of play.

I've watched Ryne play a few times for Purdue, and I am quite disappointed that he didn't go to BU. He sees time every once in a while for Purdue, but probably won't see much time this season or next. In the rugged and often ugly Big 10, I am not sure how effective he's ever going to be with his slight frame (6'3" 170). Had he chosen BU, he'd be seeing major minutes in a perimeter-friendly system and would probably be one of our top perimeter shooters. I just think back to the Butler game, and how Butler seemed to have 2 or 3 kids that could shoot it like Smith can.

Smith's other offers besides BU and Purdue were Bowling Green, Fairfield, UMass, and Ole Miss. Sure would have been nice to have on the Hilltop.
            Onward and Upward!

not many midmajors can outbattle the BCS boys for good recruits, but we've been close on several, including Novak.
But I think we are already getting some of the BCS caliber kids looking our way
