    Gavin Block

Family sources says offer for Gavin has been pulled because there are no scholarships available for next year.

Really? Is Auston Barnes redshirting and coming back next year for a 6th year?

I would hate to miss out on him.

I wouldn't discount that info - as that might be what's told to a recruit if the scholarships are committed elsewhere --
It might actually be good news in that it means someone is taking the known open scholarship - but we've heard nothing yet?
...and it might also explain why Block is still seeking and even checking out SIUE -

My recollection is that legal problems aren't grounds for a redshirt, but maybe I am wrong. Additionally, I would hope that the scholarship wasn't pulled under the belief we are full because as we have seen in the last 5-10 years in College Basketball, most likely there will be some transfers.

I was being a it facetious. Barnes already used up his redshirt year his first year at Central Michigan (2010-11), so there is no chance he could get another year. But he is a senior, so it guarantees at least 1 scholarship opening. And we all know there will be at least a couple more that become available, and as far as we know, none of them are spoken for.

Even if a coach knew he may not have enough scholarships, why would he tell a recruit this early that "there are no scholarships available for next year"? Isn't it remotely possible that we could have an extra scholarship, and Gavin Block could "blow up" and become another Alec Peters, that we wish we would have recruited?

From everything I have heard from coaches about how recruiting works, IMO the only reason a coach would tell a recruit this early, and before any scholarships are committed, "there are no scholarships available for next year" is that he simply did not want the kid, and this was a kind way to send him packing.

correct - it's even possible to continue recruiting even if all scholarships are spoken for - most coaches do..........
... and some coaches have even "oversigned" regularly by one or two...
Tom Crean regularly oversigns every year by one or two then boots (or "Creans") players each spring - in fact Matt Roth was unfortunately victim to just such an event.

.. if you want a kid- then you do everything possible to keep the kid interested - you'd only tell them there's no scholarship available if you really mean we will not offer you one...

The recruiting of Block is very confusing and I hope it gets cleared up very soon. That should only happen with a commitment and I hope it isn't someone who can only run and jump. We know Block can shoot and was very interested in BU. If we miss out on him and get our typical "athletic non shooters" I'll be VERY disappointed.

From what I have been told there is will not be a senior on the team this year because of grades. I hope I am wrong.

I have not heard this, and if true, it would be a major story. I'd like to know where you heard this from?

As noted above, Auston Barnes does not have another year of eligibility after this season, since he burned his redshirt season his first year at Central Michigan. So if he is academically ineligible, he would be done and would not be able to return next year, which would still open a scholarship.
And of course, if he plays this season, he would finish his eligibility as well, and be gone. So either way, his scholarship would have to be open and available next year.

                        I don't know - but here's a thought...
I still consider it 2nd, 3rd, or 4th hand hearsay - maybe ok for speculation on message boards but hardly enough to be convincing....
I actually heard from a usually reliable source connected to the BU athletic dept. that we would never tell a kid that if we wanted him - but then even my source wasn't there when it was discussed between our staff & the recruit.
I have even had family members/friends get college scholarship offers, then found out later the truth & reality was somewhat different than was was told...

...likely only 3 or 4 people were really present when the Bradley coaching staff discussed scholarship offer with Gavin Block & family, so how does anyone know for sure?

I have said all along he is a UNI type player and one we need. If they get him I'm going to really be pi-sed.

As I have said before, I like Gavin, but I am not sold that he will be an immediate impact player. I think he is too small to play the 3, and not quick enough now to guard the 2-guards in the MVC. But I believe he can develop into a good MVC player. I have heard a former coach compare him to a young Jeremy Crouch, but he will need to work on his defense, and ball handling.
UNI's style would work better for Gavin, and if he were to go there, they'd probably ask him to redshirt and get stronger, like they do with a lot of their recruits.

But whatever happens, I would like to see us land more of our primary recruiting targets than we have in the past few years. I do not believe Bradley (or any MVC school) can become successful in the league by relying heavily on late spring juco signings and having the rapid player turnover like we have seen lately.
