  • BU recruit- 2015- Lincoln's Gavin Block

I have said for a long time we need to recruit kids like UNI and Creighton do. 6'5" to 6'8" shooters who can flat a-- shoot the ball and this kid Block from Lincoln is the type of kid we need to peruse with all we got. Not sure of his size but he's in that range, can handle the ball, run the floor, defend and most of all shoot the ball better than any one we have on our roster. He's just a Junior but if we aren't on him ,I guess I don't understand the game.

Well I didn't see us but I did see Drake. That makes a lot of sense to me as Drake,UNI and Creighton all like to recruit kids that can flat shoot. Maybe we don't need shooters????
Hope we get on him in a hurry. I think he has more potential l than Peters and we all know how that worked. Geno wanted Taphorn over Peters and we all know how that worked to.

Peters was obviously more DI ready...
and as for Nate Taphorn's 3-pt shooting prowess - he was a complete unknown until this one weekend when he had a hot streak in front of all the recruiting experts - LINK
He's never since shown that same hot-shooting/scoring touch although he's not a bad shooter...and he only averaged 12-14 ppg in HS games.
He got to play almost 30 games with Northwestern and took almost as many 3-pt attempts/game this year as many of the leaders in the MVC....
and yet he hit just 27.8% of them....so time will tell.....

He's a good player but he'd have had an Austin-Ruder-like or Kyle-Korver-like season had he gone MVC.
I think if he doesn't get decent playing time next year then he and his family are smart enough to see the writing on the wall that he is NOT one of Collins' recruits and may be on the same path as Nick Fruendt who also would have had a good career in the MVC yet only played sparingly at Northwestern and ended his career scoring only 85 points.

He would be on my must list. We missed out on Peters and this kids better than Peters when both were Jrs. Let don't miss on him.

I don't believe we have ever had any luck recruiting from Lincoln dating back to at least Cook. Maybe someone can correct me. If the big boys are poking around it will be hard to recruit him to Bradley.

I don't see why it should be hard. Bradley is the closest D1 school to Lincoln, except for Illinois State.

The last Bradley player I can recall from Lincoln was Seymour Reed. He played for Joe Stowell from 1971-74. He is 34th on the Bradley all time career scoring list with 1,138 career points. Not bad, considering he played before freshmen were eligible to play on the varsity, so his stats include just 3 seasons of play. He was a star with the 1970-71 BU Freshman team that was undefeated (15-0).
Reed graduated in 1974 and was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 12th pick in round 5 of the 1974 NBA draft. But he was waived before he ever played a game.

Gavin is a high IQ basketball player with a good skill set to go with it. He is not high major good unless he is a specialist. He would be best suited for MVC or below. 6'5 or 6'6 not overly athletic, not overly quick. The structure of Lincoln's offenses and defenses hide his weaknesses. Offensively, catch and shoot, or make a move coming down hill. Either pull up j, continue to drive to hoop, or spin off that drive. He got exposed at the end of the game against Morgan Park when he had to create for himself against superior athlete (Ball stolen twice off the dribble). Defensively that 1-2-2 hides his faults defensively, they guard areas not a specific player in space.

I think he is a very solid player, but high major (I do not see right now, unless he is a specialist). BU could use a big wing with his IQ and skill set. But the question remains, can he guard a Ron Baker, Cleanthony Early, Tekele Cotton: and what could he do against them if they are guarding him?

MVC at best right now, think he would be better in horizon, ovc, patriot type of league. Just my opinoin
