  • Recruiting formula?

As I read about all the offers schools have out to HS and JuCo players, I'm still not quite sure how a team comes together. Please forgive my ignorance, but in any given year a program will have hypothetically 30-40 offers out there for 2-5 scholarships. How do programs keep the bottom guys #38-#40 who might all might be average 5'-11" point guards from committing to the school if guys #1-#3 who all fit different needs are still interested but not ready to commit.

In business, you don't offer 3 jobs to all 30 people you interview, you offer 3 jobs to top 3 people and move your way down if you get declined. I know there is some element of the recruits knowing who else might be coming to fill a role, but what's to stop 3 kids with 3 offers to be the next point guard and all thinking they'll be better than the other two, meanwhile, you don't have a power forward because the 6'8" JuCo transfer is still entertaining other offers but still might come to play for you and can't with 3 PG's already accepting offers.

From what I have been told it's a risky and sometimes dirty job. The bigger BCS schools can have a choice of who they really want to offer.....mid-major and small schools have to appeal to the masses.....most the players they covet have larger offers and a chance to play on national TV every game. Hard to compete as a smaller school so you must broadcast offers if your top offers move-on which usually happens....keeping the other offers at bay just in case.
You cannot wait to long to offer because every recruit and their parents think they can do better....the staff and team must make every recruit feel rally wanted......because they still only except who they want. It's normal to over offer though to give more options on what you can't control.......or on who is left to committ. All of this comes with risk...it's a roll of the diode!

PS.....remember, grades also enters into the equation more than you would think! Kind of like playing the lotto....can't win if you don't buy a ticket!
