Bartley blowing up but still mentions Bradley offer
he notes a couple schools who are targeting him and Northwestern has made him their #1 target - wonder if we are targeting him or making him a priority?

Nice article on Marcus Bartley - in fact the best coverage of several of the fine young players on the Peoria Irish I have seen yet -

former Bradley recruit Marcus Bartley is now leaving Saint Louis - and transferring...
odd time to be leaving - may find it hard to find a destination.. he's played two seasons at SLU so juco is not an option.
He started half the games as a freshman and averaged almost 20 min per game, but as a sophomore dropped off and came off the bench for 14.6 min per game..
but with a new head coach this year, he probably can see writing on the wall.

Bartley left because he didn't feel the same connection and vibe with the new staff as he did with Coach Crews (and staff). He wanted to try to stay loyal to SLU and gave them pretty much all summer to see what new staff is like. But in the end he felt that if he was going to start with a new staff/system/culture etc, it should be one that he feels comfortable with not one that he is forced to have.
He wouldve been the starting SG this year and reason his minutes went down last year were due to turf toe & ankle injury.

I think that is a great fit for him at SIU, and a nice way for Barry Hinson to bounce back and re-use the open scholarship after Bola Olaniyan left suddenly and unexpectedly so late in the summer. Of course, he will have to sit out this coming season, but then will have 2 years left to play at SIU.
But I thought Bartley would have more success at St. Louis, since Crews liked to play big guards like him, often 3 or 4 on the floor at a time. But for some reason, even though he was the Billikens top 3-point percentage shooter, and he shot 94.4% on free throws, he didn't play much last season, and his production dropped off from his freshman year to just 3.8 ppg as a sophomore, despite the fact that the Billikens were a lousy 11-21 (which got Crews fired) and really could have used better shooting and more scoring (they shot just 32.8% from 3 as a team, and averaged only 65.8 ppg). Maybe it was his defense?
Bartley actually played a lot more as a freshman for Crews (19.2 mpg vs. 14.6 mpg as a soph), and had better stats.

And the article says he seems to have been promised he will play point guard for Barry-
It's been said that Bartley left because of the coaching change last spring and he didn't feel the connection with new coach Travis Ford that he did with Jim Crews. But from what I see, it appears he may have fallen out of favor with Crews his sophomore season, since he played far less when the team could have really used his offensive skills.
Can any other readers who follow him more closely explain why he played much less and did not seem to develop at St. Louis as a sophomore?

Minutes went down last year due to turf toe issue and ankle problem that couldn't get healthy. Didn't have same quickness & explosion most of the season as he tried to tough it out and play through it. Off season has helped those issues a ton.. Not 100% yet but as close as he has been in a long time. Red-shirt year will be big for him. 1) to get healthy (2) and gives him a year to add more weight to his frame.
