wow - SMU kinda reminds me of what St. John's did the past couple years -- they hire a big-name-coach, then load up on multiple top rated kids & land a ton of publicity in the process....
                    maybe they'll succeed.......

I guess we'll see if it pans out for them....it got St. John's a few wins....plus tons of publicity and air time...but it hasn't really "paid off" as much as some thought it would...

in the first year St. John's won 4 more than the year before which was bad enough to get Norm Roberts canned...
then they went 13-19, their overall conference record is not above .500, and they still haven't won a post-season game despite all the accolades people have thrown at Lavin/Dunlap
(who they're paying over $2.5 million per year) for their "rebuilding job"...

The latest 2 signees by SMU, Sterling Brown and Ben Moore, are good players, but I am not sure they are Big East-good. I follow recruiting closely, and Sterling Brown has been endlessly hyped by some of the Chicago recruiting experts. Could he be a little overrated? Most sites rate him as a 3-star recruit, while many Big East teams are loading up on 4 and 5-star players. He averaged just 13 ppg as a junior, and is not a great shooter. Also, recall that Crandall Head, a similar type of player is now at SMU and will be eligible next season. It will be interesting to see how Brown does at SMU next year.

Ben Moore was virtually unheard of before the summer, when he emerged on the AAU circuit. He seems like the real thing, but at 6'7" or 6'8", he may be a bit small for the Big East. Most of his offers were midmajors.

But at least he will give SMU a great advertising potential if he becomes a force in the paint-

You can't compare Lavin to Brown. That is the big difference. I expect to see Coach Brown in the NCAA and winning a few games. Can he get the program to become a national power? The money is there but will he stick around long enough is really the question? 3-4 yeas is what it will take.

there are plenty of people putting Larry's life expectancy at SMU in that 2-4 year span...
