BU recruit- Class of 2016 - Ben Coupet

Slightly older Bradley fans might remember Ben Coupet who played for Jim Molinari from 1994-1996. He was a 6'10" player from Chicago Simeon HS who never quite lived up to expectations at Bradley.

Now one of the best young phenoms in Chicago is a younger Ben Coupet, the son of the former BU player. He is a 6'5" 8th grader who is one of the best young players in Illinois for the class of 2016. He is planning on attending Simeon HS next year.

it's still quite early in the high school basketball season and yet Chicago Simeon held an open scrimmage - kinda like a college-type Red-White - also described as a "Showcase" of all their talent....
......over 1300 people came to watch!! How many were at our Red-White?

it's being reported that 6-6 freshman Ben Coupet wowed everyone and will play a lot on varsity

he's already grown to 6-7 (he's a freshman) and plays like a guard (for Simeon)....but with the lineup Simeon has he isn't playing a lot of varsity right now

Which reminds me of a story from where I worked then. At that time I was in charge of ordering merchandise for a small sports licensing chain in Central Illinois. I was in our store in the Northwoods Mall one night and in walks most of the Bradley basketball team. They were looking for a hat with only the NBA logo on it which we had in stock. We showed them the hat and everyone started laughing. Naturally I asked them why they wanted the hat. Their response was that the hat was for Ben Coupet as he was declaring for the NBA draft. My immediate and unfiltered response was; "YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME" which resulted in immediate laughter from everyone. They bought the hat and I am certain that they had some fun at the expense of Mr Coupet.

Is "reclassifying" the new "held back"? Seems like it is happening a lot. I have a couple buddies that were reclassified in the first grade.

sort of - but a little more thought goes into it..
a kid might want to reclassify if he's still developing and would be much more of a power by moving back a class- it sure worked for Mitch McGary - who rose from obscure/mid-major-caliber to Top 5 by doing an extra year of high school...
..also one class may be loaded with talent but the subsequent class - not so loaded - so a kid has a better chance of getting noticed by reclassifying..

BTW - every once in a while a kid reclassifies by moving up a year and graduating early - but usually this is disastrous - and the kid quickly finds out he isn't anywhere close to ready to play in college
