anyone interested in how our near-miss juco Tymell Murphy is doing since he turned down BU's offer and instead went for FIU??

Well - FIU is 1-2, with a win over Coastal Carolina (87-77) & Losses to Boston College (84-70) and Stephen F. Austin (69-60)
In their only home game they drew an announced crowd of 971...

Tymell gets to play a ton - he starts and plays almost 30 minutes...
..so I guess maybe he knew that would be the benefit of going there...

In those 3 games he's hitting 58% from the floor (15-26), scores a little over 11 ppg,
is 0-2 from 3-pt range, and only 4-8 from the FT line..
    14 rebs (4.7 rpg), 3 fouls per game and about 3 TO/game
FIU's production drops way, way off after their top 6-7 players so Tymell probably has a pretty solid lock on all the playing time he can handle --
and Tymell's stats don't really argue much for him having a starting spot here and none of our non-starters play even 20 minutes per game - so - maybe he made the right decision.

Tymell Murphy is having a solid season so far - he had a double-double yesterday 16 pts, 10 rebs...
Some's other near misses are not doing so well...

Mislav Brzoja barely ever plays at Villanova even tho they desperately need an outside shooter and have a team 3-pt FG% of barely over 30%
Matej Buovac hasn't played a minute yet at NMSU even tho they need an outside shooter even worse and hit just 30% from the arc. Redshirt almost a certainty
Coty Clarke is playing solid sub minutes at Arkansas.

I've been keeping a close eye on those four and a few others...and I am surprised how many of these players chose a school where they won't be more than a secondary option/bench player.

Murphy, oddly enough, made a choice in line with his talent and is playing great...and he was the one I was almost hoping wouldn't work out because I didn't like his measurables.

Another kid I really wanted who was serious about Bradley was JJ Panoske. He is a 6'10 inside-outside threat. However, after redshirting last season, he is deep on the bench this year at Milwaukee and rumors are swirling that he might be out at semester break.

Tymell Murphy 20 pts, 10 rebs - the guy is better than I thought he'd be
He's the kind of athletic juco scorer we needed to match up with Wichita...

BU recruit Tymell Murphy tells the story of how he chose FIU over Bradley last spring...
..Murphy had never even been recruited by FIU nor even heard of them until the day he chose FIU over his offer from Bradley!!

"Coach Pitino just got the job at Florida International, Tymell, I’ll call him up and tell him about you.”

Those were the words of my junior college coach Hank Plona. I said “Who, coach Rick Pitino from Louisville?”
He said no, his son. I laughed it off. I went to Google to look up coach Pitino and FIU
because I had no idea this school existed to be honest.

Next, I got a call from coach [Mike] Balado and he told me about FIU and the situation.
I then spoke to every [FIU] coach on that same phone call.

“I’M COMING COACH!!” I told Pitino.
.....I committed basically with no visit or knowledge of where this place is in Florida....."

BUT - the FIU head coach is gone now to Minnesota...

after a good year at FIU - the head coach Richard Pitino left to take over at Minnesota...and ex-BU recruit Tymell Murphy shopped around a bit - visiting a few places - not sure he'd return to FIU -
then he even hinted in a tweet he was going to transfer to Hofstra - but now has said he's returning to FIU..

Good news & bad news for ex-BU recruit Tymell Murphy..

-Good - FIU moves to Conference USA - a better conference and way more exposure...

-The bad news - the grades at FIU basketball have been bad enough that they got hammered with the severe NCAA penalty of banning them from post-season play in 2013-14.

-Tymell turned out to be a pretty good scorer & player - He was FIU's LEADING scorer & rebounder more often than not...he is a freakish, Chris Roberts-type athlete
he averaged 15ppg/7rpg/2bpg/1.2spg ............. and had considered earlier this summer the possibility of transferring from FIU.
BUT - with the post-season ban, there is an NCAA rule which would allow seniors - who would then have NO further chance of playing in the post-season - to transfer and BE IMMEDIATELY ELIGIBLE.

Tymell Murphy had a career night...22 points, 15 rebounds as FIU beats Rice!
                    He's averaging 16.1 ppg & 7.4 rpg!
