  • Bradley recruit- 2007 juco Charlie Coley

Charlie Coley is a 6'7" junior college sophomore, who was considered as a possible Junior College preseason player of the year by Street & Smith's. He is originally from Florida, and now plays for Dodge City Community College in the Jayhawk Conference.

Bradley had been recruiting him, but he now has several other high majors involved. Schools actively recruiting Coley are Oklahoma State, UNLV, Texas A&M, Kansas, St. John???‚¬?„?s, Bradley, Oklahoma, Auburn and Florida State. He took his first official visit a few weeks ago to Florida International. He does not have any other visits scheduled.

There is a new premium article on Coley on Scout this morning--

His coach Brian Hoiberect says this about him--
???‚¬?“Charlie was in contention with two other players for the Street & Smith???‚¬?„?s national junior college player of the year. He???‚¬?„?s arguably the most athletic junior college player in the nation,???‚¬?? Hoberecht said of the West Palm Beach, Fla., native with a 41-inch vertical jump.

Coley averaged 11.7 ppg and 10 rpg with 101 blocked shots (more than three a game) in helping lead Dodge City to a 23-10 record last season. He shot 57 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the three-point arc. Not bad, considering the Dodge City team had 5 players average in double figures last season.

Although Street & Smith???‚¬?„?s did not select Coley as its preseason player of the year, the magazine did name him to its first-team Super Sophomores.

Is this the Kansas kid that had everyone (including DRU) drooling over the possibility of his committing to BU?

this is not the guy that i had heard about, he is a high schooler.

I think we were probably refering to different people though. I can not find the name of the guy that i heard referenced elsewhere anywhere now, its like he disappeared from the face of the earth, like he was some urban legend or something.

Charlie Coley is still a recruiting target of Bradley. I have heard he will be visiting Bradley on April 13.

Several of the schools that had been recruiting Coley have recently signed big men and may not be in the market for Coley any more.
Today, Auburn got a verbal from a 7', 260 pound forward, so they may now be out of the market for Coley.

Here are the schools that Rivals lists. There may be others.--

Here is the big man Auburn just got--

This would be nice, but it looks like we have little chance... Thanks Coach for the information as always.

I don't think he would visit if we had little chance, although with the lateness of the visit it seems like we might be the fallback plan.

if we end up being the "fallback plan" wouldnt that almost be a good thing? i mean then the kid comes in with a chip on his shoulder to show up all the other schools that passed on him...maybe schools we could meet in the final 4 next year???
COMMIT TO THE INDIAN!!! - denis savard on his blackhawks, but we should adapt this as a bradley slogan.

I don't care what we are if we get him. He seems like a great athlete and being 6-8 and big in the 3/4 would allow him to dominate in the valley. I can't disagree with others that have said if he signs with BU he might start, and give Fears a run for NOY. I hope we land him, he is the kind of athlete a small school has trouble getting. I wouldn't mind if he brought along his pal Wade Knapp either.

I agree. I don't care if we're his #1 or the last possible place he can find, I just want this kid in a BU uniform next year. I want his curly-haired teammate as well.

If BU gets both Coley and Knapp, I dare say BU and SIU would be 1a/1b in the pre-season conference polls next year.

I won't say it couldn't happen, and BU has had some decent success with juco kids......but...

Let me remind you that Creighton got the number ONE (#1)
rated junior college player in the nation (by some junior college ranking services) just this past season...2006-2007 and he was a complete bust.

                      Here are a couple links>

First are some comments about Morrison being Top Ranked:

And then the first, second, and third team All American jucos with Morrison on the 1st team.

And here's another thought........listed below ore the entire first 5 teams of Juco Preseason All Americans as listed before the 2005-2006 season, and these players would mostly be going into their senior year now, and tell me how many have actually been any impact??

                      First Team
Center- Hernol Hall 6'10 Lon Morris(TX)
Power Forward- Jerome Habel 6'10" Mt. San Bernadino (CA)
Small Forward- Ty Morrison 6'7" Redlands(OK)
Shooting Guard- Sonny Weems 6'6" Univ. of Arkansas-Ft. Smith(AR)
Point Guard- Carlos Williams 6'2" Wabash Valley (IL)

                      Second Team
Center- James Davis 7'0" Schoolcraft Community College (MI)
Power Forward- Takais Brown 6'8" Southeastern Illinois Community College (IL)
Small Forward- John Williamson 6'6" Cincinnati Tech Community College (OH)
Shooting Guard- Odarien Bassett Okaloosa-Walton Community College (FL)
Point Guard- Charlie Burgess Howard College (TX)

                      Third Team
Center- Shawn Taylor 6'10" Chipola College (FL)
Power Forward- Cyrus Tate Northeastern Nebraska Community College (NE)
Small Forward- James Spencer 6'4" Los Angeles City College??????(CA)
Shooting Guard- Demetrius Green 6'4" Daytona Beach (FL)
Point Guard- Jamal Smith 5'9" Indian Hills (IA)

                      Fourth Team
Center- Stanley Billings 6'11" Independence Community College (KS)
Power Forward- Mike White 6'6" Lee College (TX)
Small Forward- Marcus Sikes 6'6" Mt. San Jacinto College (CA)
Shooting Guard- Tony Boykins 6'4" Illinois Valley Community College (IL)
Point Guard- Stefhan Hannah 6'1" Chipola College (FL)

                      Fifth Team??????
Center- Shaun King 6'10" Carl Albert State College (OK)
Power Forward- Josh Love 6'7" Hill College (TX)
Small Forward- D'Mario Curry 6'7" Schoolcraft College (MI)
Shooting Guard- Albert Weber 6'4" Connors State College (OK)
Point Guard- Limar Wilson 5'11" Northeast Nebraska Community College (NE)

Of those 15 top juco kids, only Stefhon Hannah (at Mizzou), Sonny Weems (At Arkansas), and maybe Marcus Sikes at Cincinnati had notable seasons, but only Weems helped his team win and get into post season play.

So all this says about juco kids is that they can be hit or miss but only rarely make a huge impact.
I think Bradley has had as much impact from jucos as just about anyone in the nation the past couple years with Will, Zach, Matt, and Boogie.

I understand completely.....but speculating on the chances that one or both may wind up in a BU uniform is part of what makes this message board so enjoyable!

I was very disappointed when Sikes didn't commit to BU last year, as I thought that was a slam dunk. I won't categorize either of these potential commits as a slam dunk, but I hope that they can see the opportunity this team has to be successful next year with them in the mix.
