    what do you guys think?

i think it should be "shootout" style. Both teams get 1 possession.
    start on 20 yrd line
    play for points.
    other team tries
    whoever has more points wins

    ties go to another round

basically its hockey shootout only with football

I think if a team can't score in overtime when all they need is a field goal, then neither team deserves to win and they should tie.
This is just the tip of the iceberg...

Just the way it is now with one change. The very first possesion of OT (just the receiving team, not the kickoff team) cannot kick a field goal. With that in mind, do you kick or receive?

        recieve
        esp if it's sudden death

I don't like the fact that only 1 team gets the chance to score.
sure defense needs to show up
but it just seems lopsided that OT is settled by a coin flip

If you don't want to deal with a coin flip, then play to win in regulation. Then you won't even have to worry about it.

I like the college system, which is basically your "shootout" idea.

But it is a big advantage to go last and know what you need.

flat out play another quarter, that way both teams get the ball and know how much time they have etc.

Never thought about it, but I think thats the best I've heard. I always thought that if the team who wins the coin flip scores on their first possesion the other team should at least have a chance to score. Like your solution better. Even McNabb would know the rules then.

The NFL competition committee does not want an extra quarter. Their position is that it is unfair to both teams especially if one has a shortened week. The players just have too much taken out of them in injuries and whatever.

I like the idea of having overtime the same way college does. Granted it sucks that the advantage goes to the 2nd team who knows what they need, but say they don't score, then they switch and the other team has the advantage. It works itself out. The only problem I see is the fact that kickers are so much better in the NFL so you generally are gonna know that kickers will make the field goal. Although I guess that isn't even a guarantee especially going into winter...
