  • Sox pound Cards

This is interesting, as the White Sox totally demolish the Cardinals, the Cards further embarrass themselves by intentionally throwing at batters.
    Ponson=Goon

I just wonder if there is anyone who believes that if the Cardinals had gotten past the Astros last fall, would they would have beaten the White Sox? Cards fans used to seem to think they'd have won the Series.

As a corollary to this thread, the Chicago press seems a bit upset at Ozzie.
Could it be that Jay Mariotti has trashed the Sox for years and still won't let up.
Is Mariotti one of those guys on the "other board" that continue to bash BU despite the amazing success?
Maybe if Mariotti has a right to trash Ozzie and the Sox, then Ozzie has every bit as much right to trash Mariotti, even if Mariotti simply doesn't understand that concept (most newspaper people don't and we have seen that here in Peoria.)

I say that Ozzie has done in just two years for White Sox baseball that which hasn't even remotely been seen in twenty odd years.
If you don't like Ozzie, then don't listen, but he has a right to say hwat he pleases.

Just to be sure anyone who's interested knows the facts,
here is the scoop on Cardinals pitcher Sidney Ponson.
(signed by the Cards despite full knowledge of his background)

December, 2005-Ponson spends another 5 days in jail for yet another DUI.

Sept. 1, 2005-Ponson released by the Orioles after the Orioles invoked the rarely used "Morals Clause" in his contract. Ponson was cited as repeatedly violating team rules that involve acohol use and abuse, but his recent arrest surely had a bit to do with this.

Aug. 25, 2005-Sidney Ponson arrested for DUI in Maryland on the Interstate.
Sidney Ponson was arrested early Thursday on a drunken-driving charge, the latest legal problem for the Baltimore Orioles pitcher.

December, 2004-Ponson arrested for DUI in Florida.
He fails to tell anyone on the Orioles and the organization is furious in March when they find out about it

December, 2004-Ponson arrested and jailed for 11 days in Aruba after instigating a drunken brawl on a beach there.
The guy he punched in the face was a well-known local judge.

    2004-2005-
Ponson, once the ace of the Baltimore pitching staff, literally can't get anyone out any more, and the league is now hitting almost .320 against him over the past two years.
Rumors abound of his bozzing and drunkenness, and his loss of control of temper.

The overall record in interleague play this season is 61-43,
or the American League is winning at a .592 clip against the National League.

That's incredible! So the average winning pct of the AL vs. the NL is higher than the total season winning pct of every team in the AL
except the Sox and Tigers who are over .600.

Even losing teams like the Mariners (35-37 overall but 7-0 in interleague play) and Tampa Bay (30-41 overall but 6-1 in iterleague play) are fattening up on the weak National League.
Only six AL teams are at or below .500 in interleague play, while 13 of the 16 NL teams are at or below .500, only 3 NL teams (Florida, 4-3), St. Louis (3-1), and Colorado have winning records against the AL, and we certainly know how misleading even that is as the Cards got pounded when they actually played a good AL team.

Even the St. Louis Post Dispatch calls the AL "the man's league".

I am enjoying the White Sox success against the NL, too. But I am having a better time watching the media word police having an orgasm over Ozzie Guillen's tirade against a Chicago Sportswriter in which he let slip the one single word "fag".

I would like to ask-- is there anyone on this board, or anywhere in the USA who hasn't heard that word many times, or used it themselves many times?
Does anyone think that Ozzie Guillen meant it as a slur against gays? Of course not.
Yet the media people are going overboard about this single use of a word used by some as a slur, and comparing it to John Rocker's tirade a few years ago directed clearly at gays and minorities, or other statements by sports personnel that were direct and clearly intended as slurs and insults towards groups of people (Al Campanis, Jimmy the Greek, etc).

I have heard Ozzie Guillen spew a lot of ridiculous stuff, and I find it funny. But the media reaction to this is one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

By the way, I don't watch a lot of network TV, but I have heard the word "fag" used on TV shows like Will and Grace many times. If it is so offensive, why do writers on TV use it for gags?

Article about American League dominance in interleague play--

Yesterday, the AL went 10-4 against the NL, and now is 71-48 for the season against the NL. (combined score 73-4.

Tuesday the AL was also 10-4 with a combined score of AL 93-NL 49.

Further underscoring the imbalance between the leagues-
The NL has not won an All Star game in the last 10 years.
The AL has won 7 of the last 10 World Series (only 2 NL teams have won, Arizona and Florida-twice). 2 of the 3 NL wins took 7 games.
By comparison, the last 2 AL World Series wins (Boston and Chicago) have been one-sided 4-0 sweeps.

SOX have looked good these two games. Let's see if they can hit the Rookie tonight.

The Sox beat the Cards for the 3rd straight. This game was a contrast from the high schoring first 2 games.
Rookie Anthony Reyes pitched a 1 hitter, but the only hit was a massive home run by Jim Thome. Freddie Garcia and Bobby Jenks combined for a 4 hit shutout of the Cards.

The American League was 6-2 against the NL on Thursday to improve their interleague record to 77-50 this year.

And in his first start of 2006, Roger Clemens is a loser to the Minnesota Twins.

Rodney, the rookie pitched well, and as is often the case when a team is totally unfamiliar with a pitcher who throws a fine game, Reyes had the Chisox off balance all night.
He has a chance to be a fine pitcher, and I for one have to wonder why the Cards haven't given the kid much of a chance to this point.

Reyes pitched his very first Major League game on 5/20, against the Royals and went 5.2 innings giving NO RUNS, only four hits and getting the WIN.

So why doesn't he pitch again until 5/30??
In that outing, on 5/30, Reyes again pitches well, going 6.1 innings against rival Houston, striking out seven, giving up 5 hits and only 3 runs. He did not get a decision.

So again I ask, why did he not pitch again until 6/22??
He is pitching better than just about anyone they have.

I'd throw this guy every 5th day as long as he's doing this well.
let's face it, he was going every 5th day in the minors.
(PS... in four appearances last season he did well also with 2.70 ERA. Even all the way thorough A, AA, and AAA ball the guy's ERA has always been 2-3.00.)

If Reyes retired today, he has a career ERA in the big leagues of 2.16, the best in 100 years!!
(I know he doesn't have enough innings to qualify, but just for comparison)

Compare to these guys' career ERA's
                    Walter (Big Train) Johnson- 2.17
                    Cy Young- 2.63
                    Whitey Ford- 2.75
                    Tom Seaver- 2.86
                    Bob Gibson- 2.91
                    Don Drysdale- 2.75
                    Warren Spahn- 3.09
                    Randy Johnson- 3.11
                    Roger Clemens- 3.12
                    Bob Feller- 3.25

This hothead, Jay Mariotti is now really beginning to sound paranoid. No, make that schizophrenic.
Now, read what this guy says.

First he says he doesn't like Ozzie Guillen because Ozzie's not nice to little Jay.

Now he is ripping into his own employer, the Chicago Sun Times, saying he thinks the Sun Times is in bed with the White Sox
secretly and won't support him on this issue. He even thinks the Sun Times (HIS OWN EMPLOYER who has published all his crap
and tirades for years) is suppressing some, or maybe just ONE of his crummy columns.

Then Mariotti rips into the people on WSCR, the local, Chicago sports radio station for NOT supporting poor old Jay strongly
enough and for siding with the Sox on this issue.

Next thing you know Mariotti is going to start claiming Elvis is conspiring against him.
The guy has gone off the deep end and is seeing demons everywhere, starting with Ozzie and going right down to people
like me who are Sox fans who just wish the i*d*i*o*t would shut up and go away, because he is absolutely ruining what is turning
out to be another great season like last year, which was the best one in Chicago-baseball in a hundred YEARS.

                      Mariotti you blow!!

Here are a couple of other really relevant articles:

"Many in gay community are happy with Ozzie"

"Journalists Fret over the 'Other F-Word'"
When asked if Hollywood is liberal (culturally or politically), whether it's outside the American mainstream, or attempting to drag it to the left, two big stars told CNN's Larry King no. On Monday night, MRC's Megan McCormack noticed that Jon Stewart, preparing to emcee the Oscars, said the idea that Hollywood is liberal and getting in the face of conservatives is not a real issue:

In other words, the "journalist", Mariotti is making a big deal over nothing, as Ozzie's words don't seem to be bothering anyone except Mariotti (who was already bothered anyway) and his few cohorts in the publishing business who'll stand up for anyone else in the profession.

But this second article shows that many, even MOST other journalists are breaking from Mariotti on this and are conceding he is making a big deal out of nothing since the word is in common use on sitcoms, in theaters, and talk shows. Indeed it is a word commonly used by the very people it is supposed to offend, and they are using it to describe themselves.

                        The word police strike again!
